Changes. Comparatively few changes have taken place since the new year began, every one seeming to feel that he is doing well enough as he is. We . know of only three, to-wit: The firm of Alexander Sims has been dissolved: Mr. Alexander goes in with Grier & Alex ander, and Mr. Sims with White & Sims. J no. F. Butt stops business and his stock is bo' ght by. Cuthbrtson & Riser, who have moved to the former stand of Alex ander & Sims, where they will conduct bus ness in future. Messrs. W. H.H. A friend of the Observer writes as follows to the editor under date December 31st : "My Dear Sir : our leader in to-day's paper, headed 'For 1874,' has the right ring about it, and ought to be carried out without fear or favor. I don't know ex actly where I stand upon your books. I only know I am somewhat in arrears. I enclose you $5 and await statement of ac count, which please send. It is a great pity that this rule were not uni versally adopted. You are now sufficient ly strong to carry it out." Churches Sunday. There were services on Sunday in the Methodist (Tryon St.), Luthern, Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Cal vary Mission Churches. In the Methodist Church Rev J S Nelson, the new Presiding E.der preached in the forenoon, and Rev P J Carraway, the new pastor preached at aight to a congregation which was large, considering the weather. The text was Paul's first epistle to the Corinthians iii chap. 11 th verse. : "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ." The subject of the dis course was the necessity and importance of building our faith upon Christ alone, and not upon any mere man, or even the church, This was Mr Carraway's first ser mon before his new congregation and he was listened to with close attention. At the conclusion of the sermon Mr Carraway said that, as he was just enter ing upon the duties of a new Conference year, he asked for the prayers and co-operation of the members of the flock, hoping with tbese to be able ta faithfully perform theVluties assigned fum,' Vol. X. The Orphan Girl. We have had ma ny applications rbr information concern ing the little white orphan girl who was alluded to in these columns last week One of these applications came from , the eastern part of the State and several are from parties in neighboring towns and counties. Any information desired can be had of Col. E. A. Osborne, Clerk of Su perior Court. Runaway. A horse attached to one of the spring wagons of the Singer Sewing Machine Co.; became unmanageable on College street yesterday, and notwithstan ding the efforts of his driver, dashed head long through the street, throwing Mr. Howard Gregqry, an attache of the office, who was driving him at the time, out of the wagon and into the mud. Mr. Grego ry was not hurt much, though he was well-nigh covered with mud. The shafts were broken from the wagon but other wise it was not damaged. The horse was caught without difficulty, and being hitch ed to another wagon was made to haul off the one he had broken . liook to the Grating. On yesterday, while crossing a grating which. lets light into the cellar of a store on College street, a gentleman or this place misplaced one of the pieces and oneof his legs went through It kept on going through until he sat down. Several persons ran up to him, feeling sure that his leg was broken. Fortunately it was not, though it was coh- siderably bruised. These loose bars over grates are very dangerous,' and it a person walking rapidlvacross oneof them should slip through, his leg would almost certain ly be broken. Property owners should see to their grates. Installation of Officers. At a meeting of Charlotte Chapter No, 39, on ; the 5th mst , the following officers were elected and installed into their respective offices : Samuel Wittkowsky, M E H P, L S Williams, King, Jonas Rudisill, Scribe, C W Alexander, C II. C A Frazier, P S, T W Dewey, R A C, James Ileineman, M 3 Bail, C H Elms, M 2 Bait, JW Wads worth, M 1st Bail, J Hoessler, Treasurer. E H White, Secretary, 11 G Springs, Guard. The Weather. Sunday was a rainy and disagreeably warm day. The streets were almost flowing with mud, inconse quence of the rains of previous days and nights. The number of persons at each of the churches was very small, few ladies caring toyenture out. The rain continued all day with occasional intervals, until near sunset, when the sun come from behind ihe heavy clouds and showed his full face. Th" scene was a glorious, gorgeous one. The rain draps which hung pendant from the tree branches, danced and glistened like so many diamonds. To add to the beauty of the scene, a magnificent rainbow spann ed the northern sky, adding grandeur to the already grand sight. But all this soon came to an end., and was succeeded by the rain and clouds, and when the moon rose it was only to struggle with the clouds and have it face obscured until it sank again. Yesterday was gloomy, warm and dis agreeable as the day before. Little rain fell, but the day was scarcely less disagree able for this. Such a spell of weather has not been knownvin years. The un iisal interest manifested in the po litical moves during the holidays, when one would suppose that the stagnation here could produce noth ing but miasmatic unhealthiness, suggests that there is some extraor dinary cautionness at work which must be lor some purpose. By a kind of tacit consent there is an understanding that certain Senators and -members who find it more prof itable to be here than in the bosom of their constituencies' shall be on picket watching the administration a.s well as the enemy, while, 011 the other hand, the democrats move about furtively with a virtuous con sciousness that they must do some thing toward rehabilitating their party, and it seems to be their policy to work awav more actively when the enemy, crocodile-like, is basking surfeited and open-mouthed, nvthe sun. It is undeniable that, with those who read the signs of the times we are at a politic al epoch which is fraught with great importance to the democratic party, looking to a new dawir and with consequences of great seriousness to the republi cans, nt the twilight of an eventful day, which; having begun in storm, . 1 1 .1 is threatening to close, as tne signs indicate and are acknowledged among the best authorities, with an exhausted and sleepy sunset. Wash,, Cor. N. Y. Herald. Cute Clerk. Is is related that a dry goods merchant was very hard on his clerks, and when a visitor left the store Without a purchase he would discharge the clerk. He took up a position near the door, and as customers passed out would inquire if they had been properly served. On one occasion a lady was negotiating with a clerk for a shawl, but the sale was not made. The clerk called the lady's attention to the old gentleman who was as usual standing near the door, waiting to 'waylay the lady with the customary question. "That old man," said the clerk, "is crazy. He may attempt to stp you as you go out,, and you had best avoid Mm as he is sometimes dan gerous' The lady started for the door, and, as the old gentleman ap proached her, gave a, thriek and darted out. - The merchant was greatly astonished, and, walking back to the clerk, asked, "Do you know that lady ?" "No, sir," replied the clerk," "but I think she is crazy." "Yu are right," returned the old gentleman, "she is crazy." The costs ef the Bazaine trial amounted to about 300,000 francs, and as the Marshal was condemned to pay them all, this will leave -his family penniless. Oyer and above this are the sums due his own defen der and the debts contracted by him self and family during the trial. Imprisonment for crown debts is stilt adopted in England. There were 1,838 persons convicted last year as to customs duties, of whom 115 were imprisoned,' and the Board of Inland Revenue caused 150 to be locked up. The majority of the latter cases oc curred in Ireland. New Advertisements. A CARD. .
