' ' LOCAL DOTS. W. R. Burwell & Co., advertise 15,000 cigars. There was a perfect dearth of local news yesterday. ' One case before the Mayor j'esterdaj7, and it was dismissed. Billiards and pool have been unusually popular during the ruiny days. It rained yesterday and then it snowed & sleeted. We will have something more to s.iy about the weather hereafter. The police went squarely back on us yes terday and positively declined to furnish us with a singleitein. Excuse had none. Subscribers wlio do not get their papers will please notify us In revising our books and striking otfhon -paying patrons, some errots may have occurred. The next entertainment will be the read ings and recitations of Prof J Present t Eld ride, wh o is billed fr Charlotte on the 15th February. The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper will be administered at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday. The communion services be gan last evening. Capt, R. A. Shotwell, of the Southern Home, who has been rusticating in Ruth erford county tor two weeks past, has re turned. The Minstrel Band paraded the streets yesterday. Thesnirll boys and negroes forgot all about the mud and plowed through it with an energy worthy of a bet ter cause. l?ev. Dr. Burkhead, pastor of Tryon street M E Church last year, has been eon fined to his house by sickness since, his return from Conference, and was upon the streets yesterday for the first time since his recovery. ' ' From the CountryReports from' the country say th t the farmers are now, and for more than a week have been, rest ing on theirs oars and doing nothing. Those who have cotton on hand are gin ning it, and those who have not are plac idly doing nothing. The Mails. We very much dislike to make complaints,' but there is a screw loose in, the mail management on the A. T. & 0. R. R. "Subscribers complain to us that their papers pass through to States ville in the afternoon and return in the morning. On so short a road, it is an easy matter to attend to the mails, and when they are not delivered properly, it is the result of the grossest negligence. The route agent will please take notice. A Handsome Compliment. We copy the following from the last number of th Dan bury Reporter, and heartily thank;, brother Pepper for his good opinion ?May he live until he tires of life, and prosper according to his1 honesty and merits : ', We were quite pleased on opening our last week's mail to find that excellent and Kpicy paper, the Charlotte Observer after an absence of several weeks ; it cheered us up like meeting an old friend. It is at all times a welcome visitor." , Won't Do It. We have been- requested to call the attention of the authorities to the condition of the pavemept on Trade sweet between the ! store of - McMurray fc Davis and the corner of Trade and.College streets. We will do nothing of the kind, however; for if we speak of one bad place somebody else will want us to : speak of some other, and so on ! ad infinitum until every nook and corner in town be called to the attention of the T authorities. k This would be spending too much, time and space and besides, might awaken the Alt dermen from the sweet illusion that Char lotte is the best paved place in the world.' - Vol. X. Auction Sale of Oil Paintings and Dry Goods Messrs Harrison & McLure will sell to-day at 11 o'clock, at their auc tion room on College street, a lot of oil paintings, and dry goods, &c. lt - - - : i ' 1 , . r i - The Minstrels. Calender's Original Georgia Minstrels gave an entertainment at Miller's Hall last nighjt, to a Jolerably well filled house. The entertainment was enjoyed- by all. Some features of it were really excellent. Where the negroes con fined themselves to negro singing, acting and sayings, the performance was as natu ral as could be. Some parts of the perfor-; mance were inferior as some parts of all shows are, but take it ' for all in all the performance was infinitely superior to any thing in the minstrel line ever before seen in this section. New Jail. It' will be seen from the Proceedings of the Board of County Com missioners, published yesterday, that it is -, , ' .,, . , prouuoie mat steps win ue ukcii Mnvaru pf..tW a. sH f.r new iail whinti it is proposed to build. If Mecklenburg couti ty needs anything, it is a new jail and a. new Court House. This jail is on one of the principal streets, just where it ought not be, and in addition to that is notori ously insecure. By the aid of a large gim let and a pocket knife, a prisoner can es cape from any cell in the building, unless he be chained to the floor. (Witness the escape of Baker who was confined in the most secure room of the jail.) The necessity for a new Court House is scarcely less urgent than .that for a new jail. The present structure is an antiqua ted looking and unsightly concern, and un wc-nhy a great and wealthy county such as Mecklenbug is. A place like Charlotte, with its elegant stores, colleges and resi dences, should hare a Court House to cor respond with its other buildings. It is to be hoped that tl.ie Commissioners, in con sidering the propriety of building a new jail, will not lorget the Court House ques tion, which is almost as important. He called upon a tradesman, and tossed a card upon the counter, say ing that he represented that estab lishment. The tradesman picked it up, gave it a steady look, and said it was a fiue establishment, and was iniomed by the clerk that he had represented it about three years, whereupon he remarked to the youth that he supposed he would soon be a partner. 1 he youth said he would he pleased rto sell him some coal or, and that ins establishment handled more oil than any other in Des Moines. The tradesman took an other look at the card, and asked the boy if he wasn t mistaken. He blushingly guessed he was, as he returned the lady's picture to his pocket. A correspondence of the Spring field Republican alleges that when Gen, Garheld was remonstrated with by another member of Congress on appropriating money to be stolen by subordinate officials and applied to providing carriages and horses for themselves on the Williams plan, ijraineia saia tnat tie knew it was wicked, "-but like the rest of us he hated to make himself odious among officeholders by taking a bold stand lor honesty and economy. Aldrich, in his new story in the Atlantic, gets off" a pretty good thing on aristocratic circles, as follows : "One is pained to hnd that the most exelusivefolk8 have frequently pass ed their early manhood in selling tape or West India goods in homce- pathic quantities. This is not an immoral thing in itself, but it is cer ly illogical in th se people to be so intolerant of those less .fortunate people who have not yet disposed of their stock. The report has been extensively circuiateu witnin trie. last weerc, tnat James Gordon Bennett will sell the Herald to George W. Childs, of the Philadelphia Ledger, and the old rumor that Bennett is to start a hew paper in London on the American plan has been revived. r , A woman at Fort Laramie has sued a paper for saying that she has murdered three husbands, when the fact is she hasn't murdered but two. the third one getting away with a broken rib. .There is nothing like being accurate when dealing with such grave mattters, t.'..r..i J X, . .,ini;-' -. -,' ..V: THE SUBSCRIBERS HAVE THIS day sold their entire Stock, consisting of Liquors, Toba'co and General Merchan dise to W.
