A man who calls him self Rogers, and who represents himself to be an agent of the New York Graphic, has. been in this city for several days, solicit ing subscriptions for that paper. We have wen not ices in several of the State papers of a bogus agent for the Graphic who has been travelling around extensively, and we have good reason to believe that this is the man. I( So he j9 a graceless fraud, and those who have paid him money will never again hear of their money or get the paper. If any of our citizens wish to sub scribe for the Graphic they had better send the money through the mails or by ex press Uian trust it in the hands of Mr. "ers. He is a large bald-headed man. P . . - VL- X1' CHARLOTTE K C. WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 11,1874, Jfo ,1,535 Arrest of Ku Klux.We learn from a passenger who arrived last evening on the CC&ARR., that two young men, R M 8teele and W B Wilson, Jrs were arreted in Yorkville, S. C, on Monday, charged with Ku Kluxing. They were arrested by a United States Deputy Marshal and bound over in bonds of $2,000 each, to the next term of the United States District Court at Charleston. We Correct We found ourself in a hornet's nest yesterday morning, and nev er did a man get into an unpleasant box more innocently or wore completely. The case is this : We spoke in yesterday pa per of the "Busy Bee Sewing Society"; saying that it was composed almost entire ly of little girls. We are told that this is a mistake ; that it is composed of grown ladies ; that when originally star ted it was it the hands cf little girls, but has now gone into the hands of the ladies of the Episcopal congregation. In addi tion to this, the printer had set up "orna mented work" when the copy read "orna mental work," and we paid the penalty of our own transgression and that of typus also. However, we make the amende hon .rable now, and hope that it will prove en tirely satisfactory to the members of the "Busy Bee Sewing Society" (which is com posed of grown ladies and not of "little girls.") mayor's cturi. rnree young men whose names we are requested to suppress, were before the Mayor yesterday morning for making a row at the "Exchange" on Monday night. The evidence weut to show that they went eo that establishment. broke down the door, broke out the side ights and went in. Gnce in they made things very lively for the inmates, break ing some cups and saucers and otherwise conducting themselves in a very disorder It manner. The proprietress of the house and two of the women appeared as witness es against the young men. The Mayor tined them $8 each and discharged then irom custody. xwo 01 the bloods were arrested 011 Monday niiiht and lodged in the lock-up, where they remained uuti yesterday morning. A stranger whose name wo have forgot tn, was also up for disorderly conduct on the streets. He was allowed to go after leaving $5 for the city treasury. Charlotte Gentlemen In R Ielgh.- The Raleigh Examiner, of Sunday, his tl following notice of three prominent citi zens of Charlotte: Capt. John Wilkes, formerly an officer of the United States Navy, but now of Charlotte, and a son of Admiral Wilkes, is at the Yarboro House. Col. William Johnston, of Charlotte, a well-known and eminently successful rail road man, a gentleman of literary attain ments, as well as of great business capacity, i at the Yarborough. Ex-Governor Zebnlon B Vance, of North Carolina, is at the Yarhorough. Persoi ally he has more friends than any man in the State. Politically he is on the wrong and weakening side, and a great pity it is. Directed in the proper channel, his great talents and amiable nature would be worih to his mother State a thousand ordinary men. But living or dead, right or wrong, radical Tom, democratic Dick n-r conser vative Harry, will ever gt back on Zeb. Vance, personally : if they do they ought not to. The compliment to Gov. Vance is a very great one considering that it is from the pen of a republican of the deepest dye. Too high a compliment, however, cannot be bestowed upon this truly .r at man, North Carolina's most bril.aintaud distinguished son. OOMWUKICATED Ilow the Second Presbyterian Church Can be Huilt. The building of a Second Presbyterian church, in this city, has been determined upon, and before long, we are told, the ed itice will be erected and the church firmly established. But the question, where the money is to come from to build the church, is one that has perplexed the minds of not only those who are and expect to be come members thereof, but of the commu nity generally. A solution ot tins propo sition is thevob!ect of this article. And in the first place, it will be necessary to in quire what will be the actual cost of build ing the church, purchasing the lot, Ac. As all thin its must have a beginning, I take it. that the people of the second Presbyte rian church do not desire a fancy building, but one suitable for their accommodation at present, which may be enlarged as the congregation increases. Their member ship is small now, consequently it would seem that an extensive building would be out'of place. Keitber is it at all necessary tnattneir architecture' should sound of al the modern improvements. "Costly thy habit as their purse can bear" is the prin ciple upon which this church shou d be built. Nor is it necessary that the build ing Should be Ideated in the business por tion of your city; but let a lot be selected at some convenient point, accessible to the members. Now let us see what will be the! actual cost of the lot in such a place with such a building upon it. The lot could be purchased for about $,500. and say the improvement could be put . upon it for five thousand dollars, making in all about the sum of $7,500. Of tiiis sum we are informed that $4,000 has already been subscribed, which would leave a balance ef $3,500 to be raised to complete the structure. The , usual way would be to raise this money by subscrip- Uon, bat we have an idea we wish to'BOj" gest to those who refuse to subscribe to his work on account of the recent panic. and yet who 'Were able to attend the fetes of the Mardi Gras, at New Orleans this Winter. We are told that the faer to New Orleans and return, for this occasion is $37 and that in this very same city, so recently afflicted by the panic, about 30 tickets have been sold. This would make the total amount of money' expended for tickets alone $1,110. The expenses incurred while in New Or gans may safely be calculated at three times that amount, making the total amount of expenses in New Orleans, in cluding Railroad fare, $4,440. Now were this trip, or rather the expenses of this trip, this money which will be expen ded for a few moments' pleasure, devoted to the second Presbyterian Church it would complete the building and give a surplus for contingent expenses. We have said the cost of the church and lot. wonld be $7,500. Already $4,000 of this amount has beeiv subscribed. Add the exienses of the Mardi Gras trip, $4,440, to the $4,000 and we have $8,440. .Deduct $7,500 and we have a residue of $1,110, which would go far towards the support of the minister for the first year. Let those who visit New Orleans remem ber tnese facts when they are called upon to subscribe to the Second Presbyterian Church. New Advertisements. FOB SALE.
