We have Wen told that the following is an excel lent way to get rid of bed bugs : Fill up oil the liftle cracks and vacancies of the bedstead with salt water. The bugs get a taste of this anl it makes them thirsty; vhile they off some where to get a driuk, mure your bed into another room. Gone to Fill His Engagemeiit.-Capt R A iShotwell, associate editor of the Southern Hum, left on the Carolina Central train yesterday m truing fjr Shelbv, where h'e had an engngenient to deliver a fecture yesterday. His subject is : "The Life and Times of George Jeffreys, Chief Justice of England." Capt Shotwell expects to re turn Monday. I Modest. There is a young man in town whose bashfulness is even greater than that of the junior editor of the PUdnont Press. He wears spectacles to keep from exhibiting his naked eye. Recently when asked what portion of the chicken was his clioice, he replied in a whisper, " A bit of (he running-gear of the fowl, if yon rlease." After this there was a great 9alm in the house until Tommie cried, "Ma give 'itu one of the legs of the old thing." C. M. MMM - -.I Editorial Vi-it We were glad to see in Our office yesterday, the handsome and genial countenance of our friend Farm an. editor of the Asheville Citizen. He Was on his way from Atlanta, and left the city yesterday evening. The Carolina Military Institute. We walked out to the Military Institute yesterday afternoon, a'hd were shown all through the building and over the premis es by Col. J P Thomas, the urbane Super intendent. It is a difficult task to give the reader anything like a true idea of the ar rangements of the Institute; it is something which must be seen for itself. Arriving there, a young cadet politely showed us to the office of Col. Thomas, the headquarters of the Institute,' where all the business is transacted and where ca dets can see the Superintendent. This room is in the rear part of the East wing, on the second floor. Col. Thomas carried us oyer the build- inc. from "turret to foundation stone." explaining as we went the use to which each separate room is devoted. We are forced to run over the list hurriedly : First, most of whom were mere beginners ; nor there were the section rooms which are hs he ever seen such a thorough apprecia elegantly adapted in every respect for the tion (by the performers themselves) of the uses for which they are intended. Next we were shown into the looms of several cadets ; these rooms are large and well ventilated ; they are required, to be kept in good order and to see that this is done are visited regularly by the Superinten dent or one of the professors. , The chapel came next ; this room is ar ranged with great taste. A pulpit, on which rests a Bible, stands on a platform on one side of the room : the fronts of the galleries are hung with pictures repre- senting the arms and the toga,he human ities and the industries. It is here that the cadets meet each morning for prayers, and a short lecture is delivered upon some subject of interest. In the gallery of this dspartinent there is an organ, which is: manipulated by the wife one of the profes sors. On very rainy Sundays when the weather is t.io inclement to go to church, services are held lor the cadets in this chapel. Having an organ in its chapel is I a pleasing feature of the Institute. Music is wen calcinated to give relinement oi feeling. It is made a leading feature in I female schools; why should its sounds not be heard in the halls where the young men of the land are educated ? j From the chapel we proceed to the hos- pital. This is arranged with all the appli ances for comfort, and a cadet sick here would not be more comfortable afc, h The flcors are carpeted, the rooms heated, and an orderly is in attendance to do the will of the sick "adet. There is ar large Va cant room adjoining the wards, in which the sick can exercise when they are able to be up but two unwell to be on duty. One of the cadets we found yesterday af i ternoon in the hospital suffering frou an attack of rheumatism. Next in order came the mess room, the cook room, the guurd- room, the room which is being fitted up for an armory, p. All these are arrange- ed after the qiost approved style, and there is an order and neatness about them a,l which speak volumes of praise in favor of the manner in which this excellent insti tution is conducted. We were shown also the out-buildings and outside arrangements about the place, and all bore the same air of neatness and good order which was observable inside. Next year small patches of ground will be cultivated in corn, wheat, rye, oats, clov er, Sc, and then the manner of preparing the soil, planting seeds, &c, will bebrought to the view of the cadets. (Here the agri- cultural chemistry will come in.) We cannot, in the short soace allotted us. erive a description of what wc saw yesterday af- ternoon. and manv things eminently de- serving of men I von will have to be passed over entirely unnoticed. Wp must, wrniitted to sav. however, that we had no idea before of the, perlect system and completeness which character- ite every tiling aoouc me inawiute xi would well repay any citizen of Charlotte who takes an interest in the Institute (and what citizen does not ?) to ga over the p!4ce and see for himself. It should not. be understood that the military part of the training at this school is unduly magnified. It is for the educa- i uHuui, B ,..., tion of youth, and the military is only used to enforce the principles which it is design ed to teach. Neither should it be under- u : stood that the discipline, because it is mil- itary, is carried to the extent of oppression. Mr. Editor : The musical soiree given by the young ladies of the Charlo'te Insti tute, under the direction of Prof. Phifer, on Friday evening, the 13th inst,, was a rich intellectual feast, and most emphati- cally a success. Prof. Phifer has abundant reason for self-congratulation in the vi- dence given by the young ladies of his faithfulness as an instructor. The Writer has seldom, if ever, listened to finer artis tic executions on the part of school-girls, musical compositions which were render- ed. The most accurate conr-eption of time was manifest in every performance, and the most highly cultivated and sensitive ear could detect nothing to offend it. Where all did so well, and reflected so much credit both upon themselves and their teacher, it is difficult, and would seem invidious, to make distinctions; but the performance of a few of the young mtlies reserves particular notice; among whom Miss Bessie Dewey stands pronii nent. Her graceful attitude and her ac curate renderings of different pieces were such as to delight and charm the cultivat ed ear and elicit the most vociferous out bursts of applause from an appreciative audience. The Military March executed by Miss Morehead, Codie Phifer, Annie Vogel and Anna Guion evinced the most accurate conception of time, and a tho rough entering into the spirit of the com position. It was brillaintly performed and loudly applauded, and was afterwards repeated in compliance with in encore from the house. Miss Minnie Phifer and Miss Eva Bryce distinguished themselves by their graceful manipulations and per- feet self-possession. Misses Bessie Myers, Laura Wilson, Isabel Erwin, Sue Hender son, Willie Moore, Hennie Schiff, Mattie Dillard and Sallie Yates deserve the high- tor the admirable manner in which their parrts "were performed? - .There were also some younger players with Whom jt was the occasion of their first ub!ic apperaance, and right well did they sustain themselves through the trying or deal. Anions' these may be mirrionea Misses Bees ie Graham, Josie Phifer, Car rie Bryce, Annie Binstels, Louie More head and Bessie Springs. Miss Bettie Griffith dieted much applause by her sing ing. She has a voice of wonderful com pass and richness, and under proper culti vation she may1 distinguisn herself as i vocalist. The evening's entertainment demonstra ted the fact that Prof. Phifer knows his business, and that the department of mu sic in the Charlotte Institute for "oung Ladies is well repre sented, and it may not be amiss to add that in this school thorough teaching is the end aimed at in every department. There is nothing superficial. The object is not to run the pupil over a rapid course of study, but to have her thoroughly drilled Land well-grounded in every Btudy or set ofstudies before promotion to a higher class is attainable. This one feature ought to commend this institution to tbe com munity and it will do so. intelligent pa rents will recognize its claims, and wil decide to place their children in a schoo where the substantial and the practica blend (not unduly) but harmoniously with the ornamental. , , ' ZUELQtTIlfN.
