The cases of the counterfeiters were continued with one exception that of mho Mail, colored, of Rowan, who was ac quitted. Some of the men were released on bail, the bonds required being very heavy, 5J5.U00 or 510,000. William Bryan, of this city, was among the number who were re manded to prison. Among other cases tried was that of a ne gro for retailing liquor. He had sold one pint, and for this was convicted and sent to prison for a number of years. As he did so the sharp piece of the tin on the back of the reflector struck the fleshy part of the hand between the thumb and forefin ger, and penetrated to considerable depth, going almost through the hand. He jerked, the sharp tin out of his hand and went to Dr J M Miller, who bound it up. Mr Stone is one of the most efficient of our force, and we sympathize with him in his affliction. Declining: Positions We regret having to publish cards from so many gentlemen, good, sensible and wide a jrake men, declin ing to become candidates for positions on the Board of Aldermen. True, the office does not pay anything and is rather a both er than anything else to those who hold it, but still, when gentlemen see that their fel low citizens desire their services in the ca pacity of Aldermen, they ought, we think. be willing to give up part (and it is but a smeJl part) of their time to the interests of the city. There is no trouble to get men to fill the places, but to get good men and men who have the welfare of the city really at heart, is an object not so easily attained. It is necessary to have safe financiers and pro gressive men on the Board of Aldermen, for to the hands of the Aldermen are the desti nies of the city entrusted. We hope, therefore, in view of these facts. that we shall not be called upon to publish the declinations of any more men of the kind named, whose friends and neighbors desire to trust their interests to them. Fire in lexinffton. A friend and sub scriber, in Lexington, writes us under date of the 27th inst.. as follows, concerning a fire in that town on Monday morning : Editors Daily Observer Dear Sirt : About 4 o'clock this morning fire was dis covered issuing from the ware house of Col C P Lowe, on Main street. The fire, when discovered, seemed to Lave heen burning for some time in the inside of the building and had gained such headway that it was found impossible to stop it until the entire building was consumed, with all its con tents. One part of the house was occupied by Mr T M Harrison, as a bar-room. His entire stock, fixtures and all, were destroy ed, estimated at some $100, no insurance. Col Lowe's loss Is supposed to be some $000 exclusive of building ; no insurance. The fire was evidently the work of an in cendiary, as no fire had been kindled in the house since Saturday, the 23th inst. The belief here is that the house had been en tered by thieves and part fit the goods sto len out and then fired to conceal the theft. Judge Cloud last week at Salisbury sen tenced two Lexington negroes to the Peni- I tentiary for five years eacb, and I have no .urn the people of Lexington would sleep sounder at night if about a half dozen mare i m , aoot iron, here to kee them cownanv. . . In fact, from the best information we can get, we believe it conflicts with the laws of our State. Futhermore, the Board of Al dermen were not aware that the costs on collecting the poll tax would exceed the amount to be collected. So that, under tins existing circumstances, we think that to en force the order would at least be very incon sistent with our duties. .: And, sir, I desire toinform you and those who read your communication, that-' the part you haveretendedly taken in the busi ness of the Board of Aldermen, was unso licited and unthankfully received. Nay, we understand it all, and your communication will not have the effect it wa3 intended to have. The tenor of your communication reveals all. You may have voted for Mr Davidson, but you were not a friend of his or vou wculd not be so eager to grasp at the order passed oy the Board of Aldermen to injure him in the coming election. Now, sir, I never was a friend of Mr Da vidson, and never did yote for him. But I believe he has filled the office -of Mayor to the general satisfaction of the people, and I . believe that the majority of our people wish to endorse him by re-election, and I am with them. Now, sir, you have accomplished notliine thus far. And if you are an "Old Citizen," you should be a good one. And it may be that you can impart such knowledge in your next as will be of interest to your city and your people, and your name added in fall will likely have its weight. Ax Aldehmas communicated.! The Mayor and the Poll Tax Card from the Members of the Board of Aldermen. We, the undersigned Aldermen, repre senting the Board, certify that the resolu tion passed at our last meeting relative to the collection of the poll-tax, was only in tended to be enforced in case there was no legal or other obstacles in the way. We have consulted the highest, legal authority in the city, and are now satisfied that the expense of collecting the poll tax by attach ment would be so great as tn render it im practicable; and we fully endorse the course of our Mas'or, and thank him for his firm ness in protecting the interests of the city against the heavy expense that would haye resulted from so many law suits. , R.
