The meeting was held in the Mint Street Methodist church, colored. The local editor of the Observer made application to be admitted to the meetuig, but was refused on the ground that no Democratic reporters were wan ted there. . - Notwithstanding this we were ahle to pick up a few items in regard to the meeting Isearly every township in the county was represented by delegates appointed especially to attend this meeting, and those townships which were not represented personally were represented by proxy, we believe.' About fifty delegates were present: and out of thirteen townships represented, ;one-third of the delegates were white men, and the re maining two-thirds colored. " ' . " On motion of one of the faithful, R. It. Rea, whitoy th standing candidate for sher iff, was called to the chair, and W. M. Mar tin, white, and S. T. T. Pearsall, colored were made secretaries. . : r The fact that we were not allowed to at tend the meeting; rfenders our; information rather limited. The following, however, can be depended upon as reliable, as we ob tained it from one ivho took a prominent part in the meeting. ' " These resolutions were introduced by Gen Rufus Barringer and passed unanimously : Resolved, As the sense of this Convention that the Republicans" of 'tins' teounty,' wilt nominate no regular Republican ticket in the coming August election. ,.-' : A 2. That the members of this Convention, t acting as individuals, hereby favor a 1 fairly constituted 'independent or raixea ticKet, and to that end the Chairman 'shall appoint a committee of 18 persons, to oonsider'-and arrange such a ticket to be voted for at said election and that the townships "not repre sented in this Convention bef requested to select one member-each' dfeaid commtttee to co-operate in arranging aid ticket.. j c The aboye resolutions explain themselves. They mark out the programme v which the party will follow in the coming campaign'. " The Business Men of Charlotte. While the mercantile house of : Wittkowi 1 sky & Rintels may be said to lead the trade in "general lineaof goodai 86ni.e of our peo ple have long eince put on city airs and have established elass- establishriients Messrs Brem, Brown & Co, for instance own a large iron front building 80 by 154 feet three stories high, which is devoted exchl-i sively to the hardware business. In addi tion to their present building thes'Jare now constructing another three story house -to be used as an Jroa -and nail warehouse, and general 'varehbuse for shovels, forks, scales, coffee mills, general Ireavy hardware, and wooden ware, of whjfeh they expect hereaf ter to keep a heavy and weU selected eteckr ? Tbia jfiriu commenced busiliessiQ 1866, on1 what was then considered ai large capital, but so'great has been the increase in busi ness that it is now six tiroes as large- as it was for the first twelve months. They have drummers or salesmen - in every corner of North Carolina, west of. Durham's Station on the NCR Rand in all of the upper half of South Carolina. They ship goods to eve ry county in Western North Carolina except two o? three. These are supplied in Knox- ville, being much nearer to that point. On the first day of January they were car rying a stock of goods amounting to $49, 0013.00, and with this immense capital they have been able to buy from first hands at such close figures that they have been able to offer country merchants the best advan tages of market in the State. The past Spring they bought eight hun dred dozen weeding hoes and twelve hun dred sweeps to supply their trade. Duringthe past year they have sold 3,500 kegs of naib. They have also imported 1, 600 pocket kniyes, with an immense quan tity of other English goods, direct from the manufacturers at Sheffield, as the bills on their files show. Buying therefore from first hands the purchaser who buys from them pay no extra jobber's profits. In this house can be found any article usually iound in a first class hardware establishment, of any size, color, fashion or weight, from a darn- ng needle to ah anvil. ," The outside world have no idea of the ex tent of the hardware trade. It is certainly beyond our comprehension. Looking through this establishment we were struck with the idea that above all things we would like to be a hardwareist. Having said this much about this estab lishment, ourlistfis hot complete until we haye said something of its worthy and suc cessful rivar in trade, the firm " of Walter Brem & Co. While this house carries somewhat smaller stock, the unaccustomed eye can make no appreciable distinction 'as to quantity, for here it seems to us, can be found every article in the hardware line, and a good deal more besides, and the retail or the wholesale dealer who would look through their stock, would sicken with sur feit before he got through If any body doubts what we say, we have only to refer him to Waiter Brem, E - j, who will 'show hiui thrpjjtfh uuiL.be is couviuced. - ;-. Mr.Walter.Brens fora son of the old Colo nel, and a rival in lm-iiatian I jt.lus .beva supposed that this fact would -ai tiiestiie difference ih keeping dwu obnijetitiiii rhis is iar fmru the fa t. -Competition is jut as lively between these two rivals, as between any two grocery merchants in, the citv. Their books show an increase of,, a little over fifty per cent, increase in business every year since its establishment, ana ine outlook for the future, is certainly as bright if not brighter than the pust. This house has two drummers in the field nearly all the time, and are making constant exertions to increase their already large and extensive trade. Iron declined in price a short time ago, and these gentlemen, taking advantage of the fall in price, have just laid in stock about ItiO.OOQ lb3. which they are offering at panic prices. They make a spec iality of pocket and table cutlery, guns and nistols- Thev import uearlv a!ll of their English Hardware, and their American goods are bought direct from the manufac turers. They occupy large and commodious storerooms, under the Central Hotel, in cluding a cellar 30 x 90 feet, and will occupy half of the store now occupied by J S Phil lips, in a short time. In conclusion, we may thoughtfully say, that there lias been a. very great revolution in the hardware business since the war. We have no doubt but that these two houses alone sold raore.gopds last year of this elass than was-sold in.t3i whole State of North Carolina in the year 1860.
