The train which left Charlotte at 9:30 last evening, bearing a number of business' men on an excursion to I Wilmington, arrived safely in this city at 5 o'clock this afternoon, after a trip fraught with many pleasant-' incidents. We are requested to say that the Alumni, of Davidson College, will meet this morning at 10 o'clock in Lecture room No. 2. Not a ease before the Mayor yesterday, -and we worried the City Marshal and police for news till we couldn't look them in the face by night This is St John's Day. It will not be cel ebrated in a public manner in this city, but the Masons will have a big time in Raleigh. The Commencement exercises at David son College to-day and to-morrow, will be reported in the Observer to-morrow and next day. we observe that Rev J B Boone, of this city, is booked for a speech on Graded Schools, before the North Carolina Educational Association in Raleigh, on Thursday, the 9th of July. Mr John Hales and Mr Conn, the shoemaker, had a personal difficulty in Tryon street yester day afternoon. A few blows were exchanged, but no serious Injury resulted to either one. The meeting of the Board of Aldermen which was called for Monday night to con- i sider the City Graded School question, did not take place for lack of a quorum. What 5 is to become of the school ? j The Commencement exercises of Davidson College, will be attended to-day by a considera ble crowd, we think, from this city. The address of Rev Moses D Hoge, D D, of Richmond, will take place this morning; at o'clock. Tbe first train from this city to Davidson, will leave at 7:30 this morning. . The Statesville Landmark says it is ru- mored that a branch of the Charlotte Ice Machine is to be established in that town. Gentlemen, this talk about our ice machine .nust stop. It is Charlotte's pride and glo ry, and we can't stand the idea of even ' branph of it being set running anywhere Personal.. Gen Rufus Barringer, of this city, left last evening to attend the Supreme Court in Raleigh. Rev Alex Martin, D D, of Danville, Va, was in the city yesterday. He delivered the Baccalau reate Sermon at Davidson College on last Sun day. Hon Silas N Martin and lady, of Wilmington, were registered yesterday at the Central Hotel Davidson College Commencement. These exercises will, we are informed, be unusually interesting to-day and to-morrow. The schedules have been arranged so as to suit the convenience of all, and we advise everybody to go. Business men can leave at 7:30, and enjoy the entire evening exercises, and get home in time to have a good nights rest, and be ready for business next day. Let everybody go and take their wives and sweethearts. Newspaper Change. We observe that the Newbern Republic- Courier has been sold by its late proprietor, Geo W Nason, Jr, to Messrs Kilburn, Powers; Hubbs and Wor- mell, who now have control of the Times of that place. - The two papers are to be con solidated and called the Times and Republic Courier. Mr Nason found that running an independent Republican newspaper can't be done successfully. ". Editors of that party haye to go the way they are told toj. or else they can't go at all Republican Convention of Meckleu- burg. The Republicans of this county met in Convention in the City of Charlotte on t Sat urday, June 20th. The Convention was called to order by Gen R Barringer, who explained the object of the meeting, when R R Ray was made permanent Chairmr n, and J M Turrentine and Z W Pearsall requested to act aa Secre taries. The principal object of tbe Conven tion was to consider the propriety Of- nomi nating a Republican ticket in the next Au gust election. After considerable discus sion, pro and con, Gen.Rufus Barringer of fered the following resolutions, which were unanimously adopted : "-- T T 1 I . it - Af t.:. ..ifin;Ml that the Republicans of , this county will nominate no regular Keputmcen ticKei in the coming August electicn. In due time the exercises of tbe evening were opened by the "March from Oberon,' twq pianos, by Misses Belle Houston, of Al abama, and Fannie Wallace, of Statekville This was played in such a manner as to bring forth evidences of the highest appro eiation on the part of the audience which applauded enthusiastically. ' We cannot mention each piece of music i on the programme, but, without wishing to ! be accused of any partiality, will refer to a i few of those which most struck our fancy : "Hard Times," a solo, snueby Miss Bes?ie Martin, of Virginia, was exoellent; it was splendidly sung, and the child s sweet warbling gushed forth in a stream- of melo dy which captivated her audience from the moment she began until she concluded. One of the principal features of the occasion was the "Sopg of Gretta," sung in -German, by Miss Fannie Wallace. The quartette, "Invitation to the Waltz," as played by Misses Lawrence, Wallace, Houston and Long, was splendid in all respects. The time was perfect, and it waa played with spirit. Miss Mamie Kobbms, of Statesville, sang the solo "Waiting," beautifully ; her voice is one of unusual sweetness, and the stillness which fell over the crowd while she was singing testified how intently they were listening for every note. "Not Mar ried Yet," a solo, was sung by Miss Addie Bogie, of Lenoir, with an abandon , which was perfectly enchanting, liie song was decidedly humorous, ' and the manner in which it was sung added to its interest ; ' it was evidently enjoyed, and; was greeted at the close with - laughter and applause. 'Rose Bush," a song duet,-by Misses Carrie Lawrence and Eva Allison, was as plaintive as the notes of the dying swan, and as beau tiful as it was plaintive. Sung as it was by the two young ladies, it was touching in the extreme. We have no idea of forgetting to mention La Brune Therese," the solo sung in .French by Miss ueile Houston. Her voice is as sweet as a mocking bird's, and her ev ery movement while singing this was grace ful and elegant. She excitedthe admira tion of all by her voice and hearing when- eyer she appeared, arid, "perhapsj- no 'perfor mance during the evening eliciteVi anore sin cere encomiums than "La Bruh4 Therese We have been forced to give a" very brief and running sketch of the evening's enter tainment, feeling sure, and consequently re gretting, that we have "fallen far short of do' ing justice to many of the young ladies and haye left unsaid many things which should have been said. From the remarks above it will not be difficult to discover pur opinion of the concert. We considered it a grand sue cess. Everything was done well and too much praise cannot be lavished upon the pupils or upon Mrs Bland and Miss Carring- ton, their teachers. These latter have shown by the performance of their pupils how tho roughly competent they, are in their depart. ments. Liberally endowed themselves with musical gifts, they know how to impart their-knowledge of this gift to others, and the concert of Monday night reflected the highest credit upon teachers as well as scholars. , . At the conclusion of the concert Prof Mar tin, the President of the College, took the stage, and after returning thanks for the at tention paid the performers, in beautiful and befitting terms called out the Rev Mo ses D Hoge, D D, who was present. . This gentleman came forward and spoke enter tainingly for a few moments.
