I I . ? i ft I Mistaken. i Our contemporary is mistaken in speak ! ing of the Charlotte fair, when it says that I the crowd was not near so large as it was j last year. The crowd on Thursday was a great deal larger than on any day last year, and on every other day, there were quite as many people present as on the correspond ing dsy last Fall. Again, it says the racing and the gambling was good. This is correct as to the racing, but the gambling was as tonishly nnsuccesfol, very few, if any of the gamblers, having made enough to pay ex penses. Knight Templars. The annual meeting of the Grand Lodge of tho Knight Templars of the United States will take place at New Orleans on the 80th inst. On the 28thf three hundred members of the organization will pass through Char lotte ; their agent was here a few days ago, and made arrangements to have them ' dine at the Central potelt5p 2 that day. 1 They will arrive over the North Carolina I 3&il road in five Pullman sleepers and a number of passenger cars. . From here they proceed via the Air-Lnereniaiiing only about: two 0 -4- Potatoes at thej Fairri 'We faUed in'our reports of-thttarticjes pn exhibition at thoFaie, to notice as fully as we should have done, two displays of Xrish potatoes. Racers and proprietors of some of the finest stock in America, have prom ised their cordial support and co-operation. They are much pleased with our city and the advantages of so fine a. climate as ooia presents, and desire to make ours their principal meeting grounds for fall and spring races between New York and New Orleans. - ' . : Their first meeting should take place, be ginning on the 20th of May and continue for 3 days, and the next the last Tuesday of October. Also for 3 days, to be continued thereafter semi-annually, last day of each term to be appointed for sale of stock. X- COMMUNICATED. ; - t Ebrron of, the Obskbveb: i-My attention has been recently called to ari article in the Obsebvxb, in which it is stated that I had been arrested and con: mit ted to the jail of Rowan countyjeharged with having, wardered vOscar- I.McFee. This charge is utterly 'Jlsrb.,was the motiv$4vy to prejudicllhe pbWn I kimWibt timent agamst-nw to such' an extent that I may be eonvicted in the 'Federal Court at Statesville upon the. groundless charge of passing counterfeit . currency. Who your informant is, I know not, but ' am satisfied that the charge orgi'nated with one Charles E. Anchisi, a detective in the service of, the Treasury Department. The man is an un naturalized foreigner, an Italian by birth, education and instinct.' who without char acter or any other quality than those com mon to his countrymen, has acquired posi tion under the: Government'. As. to the character of this fellow, I have only to say at the late term of the Federal Court held at Statesville, two " vfyfaiM.fy1 traif for sg";counteifeitJ money and the only issue presented was whether Anchisi was to be believed or not. He had - testified to very fact necessary to establish the guilt of the defendent, and with a jury of more than ordmary intelligence and moral worth they by their verdlcV said that .Aptjhisi could not be believed. His bbjecthas been to poison the public mind against me and other gentlemen, who ; have been indicted upon. his. (j4inonj and other, witnesses ' of' as nttfeebaraeter as? nimself. At tne first term when t was indicted, I insisted upon a trial. This was denied me, and. thiB tod- when the witness McFee was present in court, and when so far as I know all the. government witnesses were present.4 This of itself proves the falsity of the charge that I regarded McFee as a material witness against me. At the last term of court I again demanded a trial, and insisted that I should not be held under, heavy bondsfor " my appearance, when I had at all times been ireay, able and willing to meet any charges which had been prelerred against me through the. active. Interposition of 'ihis taliaiyde-, tective, who has as little knowledge--of jus tice, as he has of American Instituoiisbut this 'was again refused. ' And. to .jnake .'my condition as intolerabte as myj enemas could some of them got' you to circulate through your paper the foul and infamous Hbel that I h?rfefe4 of JtwOWan COUUiy iwyvjuob uuswbbcsuuu ouu I am informed that a;most. thorough' jBxam inatibn', not the ;'shadow 'of 'aisbade ofc.sus- picion was thrown upon me r any of" the other persons jolntiy,' udicte:tmh This fellow Anchisi l.Bf , subi'ent7tobls more anxious to injure me than f ferret out the real murderer of McFee. seem so derfgn- edly follow false scent?. 'Why tti gef after the man last seen witfit M(eeV.WOf ttndr a falsa narae. waa traveiling with husb and who was heard to say that McFee had when he left his house front one hundred to three hundred dollars, and afterwards said when he left, he had not a cent, and when the the body was found it had no money, but only the knife of a fellow traveller ? When are we to get rid of these oppressive acts of the Federal Government. Only last week at Statesville a witness for the government who had been detained at home by sickness voluntarily came to court when he was seia-' ed with a capias and incarcerated in jail be cause he could not give bail, which could be justified in the sum of three thousand dol lars ! Oh I justice how many crimes are committed in thy name. I have no cause to complain of Judge Dick who on occasions has shown himself to be an upright Judge, willing to administer jus tice impartially, but I have a right to com plain of any one who will publish the in famous slanders of such men as Anchisi, not content with gi ving publictly to this charge through the press..; I am informed that he was on the court greek -at Statesville sedu lously choxilating the report that I and those je3ntAi&id;?with me, were McFee's murderers; I am ready to meet these charges at any time and when my trial takes place at -Statesville I know I shall be as triumph antly acquitted as that Anchisi and his hirelings will be discomfited.
