The rate of passage oyer the Carolina Cen tral Railroad from Charlotte to the Wil mington Fair will be but $2.50. The Mon roe Enquirer is responsible for this state ment We don't know whether Jit means round trip tickets or not. It would be well for the authorities of this city to hate an eye open for the negro, ana arrest mm n ne puts in an appearance here. Perhaps yoadon't know why you didn't get that postal card you were expecting. '"Tons of postal cards without any address are destroyed in the dead letter office, be cause people write1 their message first, then forget to address the card." and Funeral Notice. The funeral services of Mr. Angus c. Ma caulay, will take place, this morning at 10 o'clock, at the residence of Mr. Allen Ma caulay. Friends and acquaintances art re spectfully invited to attend- " The Star." . We publish on our third page this morn ing, a sweet little poem under this caption. It is from the pen of a North Carolina lady, now resident in a distant State, and has been in possession of the writer for a num ber of years. It has' never been in print, and we thinkjt well worthy of publication. V : These New Ilats. Every lady who doesn't wn one of these new fashioned hats, is crazy to get one. It looks like some able bodied fellow had sat down in it.and that then it had been thrown away, and the old cat and all . the kittens had been sleeping in it for a year. But it's the fashion, and, of course, is perfectly "killing." The Dust, Is now what ouryoung lady friends would call 'horrid," and "frightful." It is very annoying, and no mistake, as it rises in clouds with each gust of wind or with, the passing of , each vehicle. Our poetical scribe undertook to poetize the subject yes terday evening, and up to midnight had gotten this far, dh ! he duss, the troublesome dugs. Filling our eyes and making us cuss. The Carolina Central. Col. Fremont informs us that track laying is now going on between Monroe and Char lotte working both ways; at the rate of a mile and a quarter a day. 'If the, present weather holds good the road will therefore probably be completed through' to' Charlotte by the first of December. .At all eventSj it .will be finished in time to bring down the visitors io our irair, to pe be neid nere a week before Christmas WUniington Jour nal. C. He was T7hile living here, connected with the firm of Stenhouse, Macaulay & Co., and was much esteemed by all who knew him. . His remains arrivedn i this city last evening and were taken to the ' residence of his- uncle, Allen Macaulay, Esq., from which the funeral services will take place this morning at 10 o'clock. - Look to. Your Property. Quite a number of the confidence men and sharpers of all descriptions, who stop ped in Charlotte on their return from the Columbia Fair, are still here, and we re peatt jour warning ' of, Sunday morning. These fellows roam around and make their livings by taking all sorts of short cuts upon the unsuspecting. They will not hesitate at any means to get money and no citizen's house Is more safe from depredations while they are in our midst than his pocket book is from their clutches. Beware of them ! New Citizens. Dr. Battle, of Montgomery, Ala., of whom we have previously spoken, has at length fully determined to make Charlotte his fu ture home, and is now here prospecting for a residence to buy or rent. He will nioye his family here so soon as possible. J. E. Nash, Esq,, of Newbern, N. C, will henceforth be a citizen of - Charlotte. He is special agent for North Carolina of the Cotton States Life Insurance Company, which, is represented here by Gen. Thos. F. Drayton, and is also the agent of perhaps more than one chemical fire eagine. We cordially welcome these gentlemen to our city. Row at Monroe. Old John Robinson's Circus and Menag erie was at Monroe, union county, a tew days ago, perhaps Saturday or Monday, and we learn theie was a row there that day be tween the negroes and whites of the town. The negroes were so full of circus and whisky that they could not contain themselves, and mat'e aggressions which the whites thought themselves called upon to suppress. A gen eral melee took place. The negroes got the worst of it. and ten of them were loazea in jail. It does not appear that any of the par ticipants in the difficulty were seriously hurt. We have no fuller particulars than those given above. The Rowan Tragedy. We received a letter from a friend in Row an county yesterday, which confirms the news which we published in our yesterday morning's issue, that Mr. Caleb Setzer has died of the wounds wMlch he received dur ing his encounter with a would-be robber and murderer on last Thursday night. Our correspondent says that he took a severe chill early in the morning of the 14th ana sank rapidly into death, to which loss of blood and physical exhaustion rendered him an easy prey. The negro Jordan who was killed has been identifie d as a pauper that had lived at the County Poor House, but who had been discharged as being able to work. His accomplice, Frank Johnston, is thought to be a negro who worked on the farm of Thos. H.Gaither, adjoining that of Mr. S. a few years ago, and has, it is thought, since been in the employ of that gentleman in or about Charlotte.
