Some time ago, we took occasion to say through formation c these columns, upon in- derived from an unques tionable source, that cotton shipped through any of our !North Carolina Sea Ports, failed to bring its true value n tie markets of the world, as if the same cotton had been shipped through tne port f Norfolk, Charleston or Sa- yannan This statement was made wjtn mucn reluctance, because we feel tnat every statement calculated to in f business of any of our sea port . . in:ure ua and our Deonle. The Wilmington Journal took urn- braee at our statement, and went for I us in its own caustic style, stating in direct terms that we had asserted what was not true. We have investigated the subject further, and can find quite a number of cotton buyers here who wfll agree with us, and to giye grea ter weieht to our assertion, we were shown yesterday, a letter from Slaught- er, Norton & Co., whose veracity stands unquestioned, to a firm in this citv. which acknowledged that the statements alleged by us were true. This heme the case it seems to us that the proper cause for our Wil- mington friends, is not to flare up and say hard things about us, but let them Jgo to work and correct thje evil. THE COTTON TAX. According to a Washington tele- tram in the Western press, the South would have had her claim for refund ing the cotton tax adjudicated long ago, if it had not been for certain mar- nlot Congressmen of her own. The same authority says : "If the South ern members bad been a unit for a bill, or content to follow the wise leadership and judgment of such Rep resentatives as Stephens and Lamar in shaping the bill, it is very possible that t.hft measure could have been pa88ed Rt the la8fc ge8aion of Congfe89. u u perfectly obvioua thafc no bill can pft88 Congress which does not harmo nize and fully recognize the equitable , . f fa t interests pressing for settlement, namely, the planters and the factors and merchants.
