There is already some talk of getting up a 'party for the NewOrleans Mardi Gras. . The confectioneries and- fancy stores are crowded with customers,' buying Christmas presents, . xM Cake walks " are haying a ran of nnpre" eedented popularity among the colored peo ple just now. So far as we are able to learn, there will be unusually few business changes with the advent of the new year. Quite a number of the members of the LegisUture hare passed through the city in the last few days, on their wuy to their res pective homes for the holidays. It has never entered into the heart of tpan to conceive such a day as yesterday was. It was a mingling of sunshine, warmth, rain and cold, and is indescribablepf- There is a noticeably subdued kmsia the eyes of those turkeys which have "come to a realizing sense of the fact that the time for them to be offered up has about come, and the hour of their departure is at hand. There was not a great deal of the staple on the market, and among the stock, there was rather an unusual amount of stained cotton. Sermon on Foreign Mlsslona. We are requested to say that Rev. J. M. Todd, of Winnsboro, S. C. will preach a sermon on the subject of Foreign Missions, in the Associate Reformed Chapel this even ing at 7 o'clock. All interested in this great and growing work, are invited to attend. The Honstou Bankruptcy Case. Thos. B. Keogb, Esq., of Greensboro, Reg ister in Bankruptcy, is in the city. He came yesterday morning, for the purpose-' of ap pointing an assignee in the case of W. H. H Houston, bankrupt. He was at work the greater part of yesterday, but no appoint ment hasyetbeen made. We understand it to be probable that the assignee will be Oapt, F. S. DeWolfe, Assistant Cashier of the Mer chants' and Farmers National Bank, or Col. John E. Brown, or perhaps both of them. Fire Crackers and Christmas. After a good J deal of suspending and re-en acting, the city council has determined that it shall be an offence for boys to indulge themselves in fire crackers, Ac., daring the holidays. Just what effect this action of the Aldermen will have on the boys, remains to be seen. We hare ourown opinion ' about it, and that is that about a thousand police men, seventy-five Mayors and four hundred calabooses will be necessary to the enforce ment of the ordinance, and then it will be but a partial enforcement. Fsjbt in Court. We learn from a private source that a fight occurred on Monday, in a Trial Jus tice's Court.at Lancaster C. H 8. CL, between two opposing attorneys, CoL J. D. Wylie and Benjamin Clyburn, Esq. The difficulty sprang out of the case on trial. Mr. (71y- burn called Cbl. Wylie a liar. He was ask ed to repeat it, which he did, whereupon Col. W. struck him a heavy blow with' his fist, knocking him down, and cutting a gash in his forehead. A Rumor. It is currently reported in Statesville. and the rumor was brought down on the train yesterday, that the United States Senate has refused to confirm Dr. J. G. JSamsay as In ternal Revenue Collector, foe this District, and that Dr. J. J. Mott, tbl former incum bent, has been reinstalled. We understand further, that this information was conveyed to Statesville by means of a letter from Dr. Mott himself, who is at present in "Washing ton City. . I . ... A Plea for' the Carriers, . K.. -, Stealing Iscaa. TFhen we were young in the reportorial business, before experience had set furrows on our placid . brow, and before our raven locks had been .whitened . by the frosts of many winters; We got very mad when we saw our locab foating around in our ex changes as the emanations of the loafer who stole them. But this is so no longer. . Fe are proud of it now, and it was a feeling of conceit which prompted us to mark in an ex change yesterday and show to a friend, thir teen locals which had been stolen from us ocals, too, over which we struggled and chewed tobacco till our head ached, locals that we thought were too good for this world, and one-ef them- was a religions lo cal. If some of the local editors of this age had lived in the days of St. Paul, they would have stolen his epistle to the .Romans from the proo! sheet, before he could have gotten it off through the mails to that people; and then Paul would have sworn, and would have gone to the bad place, just; where all those fellows who systematically y freeze to our choicest items are going, and we would have no hopes at all of ever seeing him. Who'll be the first to steal this one? . : Meetings of the Board ef Aldermen On Monday night, the Board of Alder men held a meeting, at which it Was resolv ed to suspend, during the holidays, the or dinance prohibiting tbe use of fire crackers, Roman candles, Ac. In addition to this an order was passed in reference to the lay- ng of sidewalks, which we will publish to-morrow, Another meeting of the Board was held yesterday afternoon at the hall over the Mar ket House, when a memorial was presented and read, which was signed by a large num ber of the property owners of the city, ask ing that the Board would rescind the 'order, made at their meeting on Monday night last, suspending, during the Christmas Holidays, the city ordinance which prohibits the firing off of fire crackers, Roman candles, Ac, in the 45ity. After healing the memorial read, it was, on motion of Alderman J, F. Davidson, ordered by the Board, that the request of the. memorialists be granted ; that the order of last meeting in reference to fire crackers, Roman candles, fcc., be . res cinded,'and that the ordinance be enforced, prohibiting the niing of these 'and other explosive substances. A Good Move. :- Mayor Davidson, has appointed a special policeman Mr. William Bryant) to taee charge of the West end of Trade street, say from the corner of Trade and Mint to the Air-Line Depot, whose duty it shall be to report to the Mayor all violations of the city ordinance against fast driving. I Mr. Bryant will begin his new duties this morning by notifying all draymen of the ordinance, .and of his determination to report all infractions of it.. , . frji Vy -'h ti :? r We commend the course of the Mayor in this, and hope that he Will be sustained by the Board of Aldermen1. The lhabit of fast driving which has prevailed recently to so great an extent among draymen, is very dangerous, and is a source of actual terror to country people, who complain of it no little, Some days ago, a countryman who came to the dry with some produce to sell, wanted a gentleman who desired to purchase it to walk clear off the business streets ; to a place where he had left his team, saying that he was afraid to drive up into any of the prin cipal streets, as the reckless manner in Which - dray mendashed - around, might cause his horses either to be hurt at to run away. Another instance of this evil, is, thaf a few days ago a countryman was rid ing a spirited horse up Trade street, .when a drayman, dashed, by him with many whips ; and flourishes. This so frightened the horse that he reared and plunged until he threw his rider, whereupon the drayman stopped; and cursed and laughed at him for not beinc a better horseman. . But there is no need to arnltiply words. The nuisance is such a great one ' nd so ualnablo that anv oneean see that it should The Air-Line, The pay train ' on the lir-Line Railroad arrived in 'Charlotte yestery 'afternoon at 5:30," having left' Atlanta Tuesday xnorning . Peck represents the road as in excellent con dition; and thinks there is nothing in the way of its making a handsome surplus over its expenses except the lack .of rolling stock, We learn from Col, Peck that Mr Fisher Who, was recently appointed. Receiver on the part of the New York bondholders, by the United States Court at Savannah,; passed down the Mir-Llne yesterday on his way to Atlanta. - It is supposed that, he will make application to Judge Hopkins to revoke his own appointment of OoL L. P. Grant, as Receiver, but What action Judge H, will take on this application, remains to be seen. It is hardly probable, however, that he will undo what he has himself done. Mr. Fisher has given bond end is ready to take charge Of the Road. Col. P. returns this morning on the 6:12 train to Atlanta. In for It Again. Yesterday morning we published a local item, reading as follows : "There is talk of an. amateur epera for the benefit of the Second Presbyterian Church:" and now we wish ne hadn't ' published that item. "Please correct that : all a mistake," said an office bearer in the church,, to the local historian yesterday morning, and we hasten to. correct and explain. The gentleman named says there is such an entertainment in contemplation for the benefit of the Memorial Association, but that the congre gation of the Second Presbyterian Church would frown any attempt to raise money for their Church by this method. It the public knew just where we got the obnoxious item, and from whom,' it' would not blame us for publishing it without further questioning. Indeed, we would richly deserve to be mobbed did we doubt anything coming to us from such a source. We didn't doubt, we listened with credulity to the song of the syren, we published' this story, and now we an listening, with chris tian meekness,' to' the story, of how we have libelled a whole congregation. Henceforth we shall never publish any thing, without first teeing it. When this 'amateur opera" is held, we shall be there and shall say something about it ; not be fore. Now you can swear to that. Personal. Johnstone Jones, Esq., Principal Clerk of the Senate and editor of the State Agricultural Journal, arrived in this city yesterday morn ing, and will remain here during. the holi day. , It pleased us yesterday to have a call from our talented friend, J. B. Hussey, Esq., tbe editor of the Statesville Landmark. Col. John B. Peck, the Master of Trans portation of the Air Line Railroad, arrived in the city last evening, and took quarters at the Central Hotel. We were glad to see in our office last even ing, our young friend John Byrne, of Kal- eigh. 7 '"" ' Jamer Mallard. Esq., local f editor of the Statesville Landmark, called on ns last night. He is just getting back from the Wilming ton Fair, where he paid expenses by peddling Sally Michal pipes, and jet pipe stems. Where he has been since the Fair closed.and what he has been doing, is one of those things no fellow can find out. Col. S. L. Fremont arrived at the Central. last evening, on the Wilmington train. Col. E. R. Idles, a prominent citicen of Anson county, is in the city, and is stopping at the Central Hotel. What They Say of Us. M. J. McSween, Esq., editor of the Fayetteville Eagle, was in Charlotte last week. He writes a letter to his paper, in which he speaks in the fol lowing complimentary terms of our city: "I spent yesterday in Charlotte the most rapidly growing city in North or South Carolina.
