Mr Hales, watch-maker and jeweler, asso ciates Mr Farrier, With him as a partner and makes a public announcement of that fact this, morning. The well-known reputation of ihe house makes it unnecessary for & to say ;more. 'v - An advertisement in another column, by a Wilmington firm announces the "first consignment through fifcm charlotte." This ought to have appeared several days ago, butj for the suspension of the Observes for the'holidays, and during the removal of our office. Though late, its announcement es tablishes the value of our new line to Wil mington. Messrs. Grant fc Hinton are the first to receive a consignment fxom our charlotte merchants. Rhy may not others profit by the example. In Another Trouble. The notorious Laura Sharp was in a new trouble on Wednesday. She became involv ed in a difficulty with a man Jof her own color, whom she carved Up in the most ap proved style, whacking him on the arm with a knife Several tiroes. No arrests made. Three or foW difficultieaof a very Beriqus nature occurred ; "the , knife and pistol figured conspicuously, and three or four parties made barrow escapes 5 from death. iThere seems to have been no good reason ifor the occurrence of any of the troubles, and nearly if not quite all of them are traceable to too much benzine. First in order, came Phllo Reid, who got shot by .Frank Morrow; both the parties are colored; Reid was! shot the neck, and it was thought for a time that the wound was a fetal one, he. is up and about hew, hbwe ter, though the ban'Wa.b'siMtsdrr? - JinTorrence was cat in the am by Gus Dunla i The, womi was a severe vone, and i the man Diea promseiy, In addition' to theseleoieEjavidsori waa cut by Thos. We ask for them a large patronage, and if they do not sell as low as any other firm, their pa trons may draw on us at sight for the differ ence. The Claims of Charlotte aa a Market. The Asheville Expositor seems to misinterpret a recent article, in the Observer concerning the relative claims of Charlotte and Wilmington upon the up-country trade. The pa- per named says : "Now we wish to say to the Observ er that our western people are looking out for the best prices, and if Charlotte, shall tan to buy our apples, potatoes, cabbage, poultry, buckwheat flour, corn, wheat, and the various other com- modities now crowding the market, J the Uharlotte merchants need not be surprised to see our our hale, deter mined mountaineers on board the Carolina Central, with thousands of big cabbage averaging eighteen pounds to the head, and with several hundred turdeos and chickens from Mitchell and Watauga counties, and with bar rels of the fine apples from Yancey county with the best buckwheat flour in the. land crying out, 'Onward to Wilmington.' "We do not mean by this to under rate Charlotte, but to indicate that if they would succeed, her merchants must afford a market, at remunerating prices, for all the agricultural products of the West." And that is exactly what the Char lotte merchants propose to do. Why, surely the Expositor does not imagine thawe expect the up-country trade if the up-country people can do better in any other market. Why, of course not. Charlotte expects that trade because she intends to offer greater inducements than any other place, and upon this alone does she base her expectation. marriages Last Month.
