Mud. in a Railroad Track. We understand from passengers that be tween Charlotte ai.d Monroe, the mud is so deep in the track of the Carolina Central Railroad, as to reach almost to the axles. In some places there are no evidences of a track, and the train just seems to be plowing its way through a sea of mud. Two Cents Worth. ; Why can't we have a circulation of copper cents, three cent pieces and the like ? If you want to buy an apple or any other trifle, 1 price five cents. There was a time when one had to pay a quarter in this city for things that sold in other cities for a nickle ; finally the latter coin came into vogue, and now for a pocketful of coppers. JLent. . We regret to learn that Mr. Edward Mat thews, principal owner of the Carolina Cen tral Railway, met with a painful accident in New York on Thursday last He was in the act of getting out of his carriage upon the pavement, which was sovered with ice, when hfs feet slipped and he fell, breaking his right arm. The wound, we are sorry to learn, is quite a serious one. Wilmington Star. Justice A. H. Martin, yesterday, for having stolen clothing, bed clothes, AC, from. Messrs, J. Sol. Reid, W. A. Knox and others, in Providence Township, some time in September last, .Shortly after the stealing the negrp Jeft the neighborhood, and was only arrested a day or two ago, in Iredell or Rowan. Some of the goods were found in his possession, and identifiee by the owners. The magistrate sent the negro to- jail to await a further investigation of the case on Saturday.3, ' ; 1 A Serious Accident ou the Ice. . TFhat was feared . for a while was a fatal accident, happened yesterday ' morning to Tommy Rankin, a little boy 12 or IS years old, son; tf CoL J. B. Rankin, of this city. He was walking along the ! pavement near Wadsworth's livery stible, on Tryon street, when he Blippedon the ice and fell; his head striking the ground first! . Hie was knocked senseless, and laid there until some persons picked him up and carriedhim into a room in' the stable. Dr. J. P. McCombs was call ed to see him there, and, after, a lapse of about fifteen . minutes' he recovered con sciousness. We would be glad to publish the notices of our contemporaries, but modesty forbids. : The Central Hotel. The editor of the HiUsbp'ro ReerSrder was in Charlotte last week. He .speaks, in his pa per of Tuesday last, of the article which ap peared in a recent number of the Rocking ham Spirit of the South, reflecting upon the management of the the Central Hotel, and says : " Having been ourselves a guest of the house a very few days after the appearance of that article, we are able to offer testimony to a very different experience. Fe had no personal disappointments to resent ; neither were we the subject of special honor or com pliment. But speaking dispassionately and candidly, we can truthfully say that we know no better house any whee and-oue expe rience is somewhat large in the hotels of this State and Virginia than the Central, and no better landlord than Mr. Eccles. The table is excellent, and could hardly be bettered, and the room struck us as fastidiously nice and clean, so much so that the observer who pronounced the furniture old and shabby must have seen it through old green spec- The very large, continued and increasing patronage of the Central is after all the best commentary on and the best proof of its excellent management.
