The Masquerade We attended the tnsquerade which was given last evening by the Charlotte Hop Club. The doors of thehospitabcl mansion of Col. W. R. Myers wrt; thrown wide open, and the gay maskfet appeared upon the floor, joyous and ha ppy : There were many of them, and the iHlfaiinH lm iirti rri person ated appeared to fine advantage. The cos tumes as a class, were beautiful, and inge niously devised. Aside from a representa tion ot characters; several parties appeared evening costume, and others still in dom inoes, we would De aereucc to our journal istic duty if we did not speak in especially complimentary terms of the handsome ap pearance of several of the visiting ladies those from Salisbury and those from Green ville. One of the four was especially ad mired. We strove hard to get a list of the different characters and by ; whom they were repre sented, but the' engrossing character of the evening's entertainment precluded the pos sibility of our doing this. ' We shall have further notice of the masquerade, in our next. ,:' . ,: The Peer of Our City. "The poor," said our Saviour, "ye "have always with you.'.V There is no doubt that there are many of these in our city who are actually in a suffering condition, and while many of our citizens would be willing . to contribute to the alleviation .of their suffer ings, an organised! system is lacking, and there is a chance " that the unworthy may come in for as large a share as the worthy. There are too many forms which benevo lence may and does assume in the allevia tion of the. sufferings of jthis season. -We are' not quite certain bat that. out charities, in many mstaaces. might be quite as kindly, and at the same time: far more judiciously and Wisely conducted. 'A 'system which would bring those who give' into closer con tact with those who receive would be wiser and better. The poor need - not only food for the body, but also counsel; advice, en couragement ; not only a helping hand to as sist them oyer tbe rough places; in their out ward lives, hut a sympathizing heart to feel for them and with them. There is ho charity which has such claims upon us as that of our poor, and during the rigors of winter they are especially imperative. At meeting of the merchants of the city, held at Sample & Alexander's store, on yesterday evening, January 15th., the meeting was organised by calling John L. Brown to the Chair, and J. G. Har ris was requested to act as Secretary. The object of the meeting being explained by the Chairman to be to take into considera tion the action of the Board of Aldermen in regard to the tax imposed on merchants, re quiring them to make return of purchases, and taxing them on the same 1-5 of one per cent., a motion was made and carried that a committee of three be appointed to draft resolutions expressive of the sense of the meeting. Said committe through its Chairman, S. A. Cohen, submitted the following pream ble and resolutions. TWbecgea.8, The merchants of Charlotte, being a large portion of the tax-payers of -th city, feel that the new tax lately levied by the Honorable Mayor and Board of Al dermen, and known as tbe "License Tax," will, if levied, become both burdensome and unjust upon them as a class, it being in fact a double tax which bears only on the mer chant, and feeling also that if we call the attention of his Honor the Mayor and Board of Aldermen to the fact that we are already heavily taxed by the City, County and State, and just recovering from the effects of a severe financial panic, that they will re peal the same, Therefore, Resolved, That the Chairman of this meet ing appoint a committee of three to obtain signatures to a respectful appeal to our Hon orable Mayor and City Counsel to repeal said act. Resolved, That the Chairman adjourn this meeting until such time as said committee is ready to report upon the action of said ap peal. ' These were unanimously adopted, and in accordance with the same, the Chairman ap pointed the following hamed gentlemen on said committee : Jas. J. Sims, W. J. Black, J. Rintels, C. W. Alexander, B. M. Miller, S. A. Cohen. On motion of SkA Cohen, the Chairman and Secretary of this jaeeting were added to the above committee.
