The Musical Society had a meeting last evening at the residence of Mrs. S. V. Young. For lack of material, there was no May or's Court yesterday. This institution has almost became one of fhe things of the past, The Centennial. Nothing afforded us more pleasure, during our visit to Chester, than the applause which greeted every mention of the (Jenten nial Celebration of the Mecklenburg Declar- 40on, '. Tventhuasm - with . which its every mention was received, showed very conclusivelywhat part the people of Chester, Winnsboro and Rock Hill, will take in the celebration. ; ' ; Marriage of a Charlotte Merchant. On the 21st inst., S. C. Wolfe, Esq., of the firm of Wolfe, Barringer Co., was married at Rock Hill, S. C, to Mss Ida M. Mobley, by Rev.T. W. Munerlin. The couple, after a bridal tour has just reached Charlotte. It is; our privilege and pleasure to extend congratulations to the newly-married pair, and to wish for them a lite of the greatest joy and serenity. Charlotte City Mills. These mil's are now complete and, for the last week, have been kept busy filling orders in the city and at a dis-, tance. The proprietor is prepared to fill orders in the city promptly, and the flour the mill turns out is repres ented by those who use it as of most excellent quality. k Second Presbyterian Church. The exterior of this structure has been finished, save the pencilling. As to the in terior, the flooring has been put down, and the galleries raised. Work is so advanced as to rendeT the church almost ready for worship. It will be a happy day for the congregation when Ihis church is finished, their present place of worship being very uncomfortable and ill-adapted to the use to which it is ap plied, . To Speak in Columbia. "Our Zeb" has consented to deliver a lecture in Columbia, S. C on Thursday night, for the benefit of the Washington St. M. E. Church. We learn this from a tel egram received in this city yesterday. He will speak in the new opera house, but what his subject will be, we are not advised. Itis needless to call the attention of our Col umbia neighbors, to the reputation of this grpt man, and to tell them, in advance, that j they will hear Fomething which will be worthy the attention of the best and most learned of them. Personal. It gave us pleasure to greet, in our office last evening, our friend and brother Wolfe, of the Monroe Enquirer. J F Murrill, Esq., of the Piedmont. Vow, did us the honor of a call yesterday. He is one of the handsomest men of the State press a 'good fellow." audit's a pity he belongs to the gang. i " J H Mills, Esq., is at the Central Hotel. ColJohnF Hake, of Lincolnton, was in the city yesterday evening," and went on through to Raleigh. Capt W H Green, Master of Transportation of the North Carolina Railroad, is in the citv. Singular Circumstance. ast evening about 9 o'clock, while police man H H Hill was on his rounds in the First Ward, his attention was attracted by a light on D street, between Sixch and Sev enth. He investigated the matter and found a fence on fire. A post on the corner of the street, 50 yards from any residence, was on fiee, and the flames were extending to al! the palings, when they were discovered. Officer Hill secured a bucket of water, and with this soon extinguished the fire. He thinks that the palings were fired intention ally, but with what object he can, of course, oniy guess. - Death of Mr. John N. Caldwell. It gives us pain to announce the death of Mr. John NJ Caldwell, Of this city. He died yesterday morning at 6 o'clock, after an ill ness which has confined hipto his bed for months past Mr. Caldwell has never been well since his return from the army. Every' year his health has been failing, but it has not been until within the past few months that he hae been incapacitated for business. The deceased had a great many friends in this city and county. He was born and raised here ; he made a splendid soldier, was a good man and citizen, and his death will be universally deplored. He has been for some time past, a deputy sheriff and the county jailor. - His funeral services will take place this afternoon at 3 o'clock, from the First Presbyterian church, and the friends and acquaintances of the family are invited to attend. - Charlotte Gas Light Company. At a, meeting of the flttckbolders of the Charlotte Qas Light Company, held on yesterday, the A following Board of Directors Was elected for the ensuing year, viz : Jas. H. Carson, 8. A. CHESTER CELEBRATION OF THE: AKITIVEB SAEY OF.THE STONEWALL PIEE COMPANY OF CHESTER, AND CHAELOTTE'S HAND IN IT. Monday was the fifthl anniversary of the Stonewall Fire Company, of Chester, S. C and having a desire to celebrate the event, our brothers across the line courteously in vited the officers of the fire department of Charlotte, of Rock HUl'and of Winnsboro, to join with them on the occasion. Always prompt te respond when called upon, our firemen, with a few invited guests.left Char lotte on a special train about 12 o'clock Monday to commingle with those of Ches ter, to enjoy their hospitalities and partake of their welcome. The crowd which left here for Chester, was as follows : Hornet Compamv D M Rigler, C T Walker, W R Myers, Ro;R Ray, R M Craw ford, J M Kendrick, A D Cowles, W T Wil kinson, J G Young, Henry Duckworth. Independent Hook and Ladder. Jas H Orr, J W Sprinkle, P H Phelan, S Xandeck er, Jno Bixby, L DDixon,' W H Justice, F J Rebman, P M Sprinkle, Jos Siler, Thos J Sprinkle, G D Snow. , Pioneebs. F A McNinch, H D Leak, N C Harry, J J Cbrmack, A S Rankin, G W Taylor, E C Roseborough, A Had, J. Low man, A Atwell. In addition to these were, Col HC Jones and Geo.E Wilson, Esq., (the orators) "Bab" Trezevant and the writer of this. The engine and traip was in the hands of that skillful and accommodating engineer, Bob Jamison, and we made fast time from the time of starting. A stoppage was made at J? jck Hill, where a number of firemen got aboard. O-nly a short time was spent here, and, excepting the knowledge that drinks are worth 15 cents, or two for 30 cents, little wasjlearned here, before we steamed off and soon landed in Chester. The party was then escorted to the Nicholson House, where, after refreshments of a liquid character had been served, a lunch was partaken of, and the balance of the afternoon was spent in going around town, seeing tne place .ana visiting friends. Charlotte gravitated to the boot and shoe store of Gregg & Means, both former citizens of our place, and made itself entirely at home under the protecting ajgis of these gentlemen, who exerted themselves to entertain the crowd, and succeeded ad mirably. After dark, the representatives of the Winnsboro Company having arrived, the guests were formed in line and marched to the dining room of the Nicholson House, where an elegant and bountiful banquet was spread. AH that a huny crowd could de sire was there, and an en. uusiastic but de corous onslaught was made. After all had been ti J to saiety with one of the finest and moH hospitable suppers we have ever witnessed, the toasts of , the evening were announced to be in order, by Maj. Mills, chief of the fire department of Chester. This gentleman called upon ; Gen. Walker, who welcomed the visitors in eloquent and be fitting terms. He expressed peculiar pleas ure in seeing present the gentlemen from North Carolina, whereat there was raptuous applause from the Charlotte firemen. In response to the toast, "The Mecklen burg Declaration," and to earnest calls, fol. II. C. Jones came to his feet. His reply was beautiful, eloquent and appropriate. There .are few who surpass Col. Jones as an impromptu speaker, and he did himself full credit on this occasion. His allusions to South Carolina, her heroes and her states men, seemed to have been highly appreciat ed by the gentlemen of the "Palmetto State," and it was with difficulty that he could take his seat, so urgent was the crowd that he should go on. The Rock Hill Hook and Ladder Compa- i a T--k rwi v w 1 i ny was toasteo next, ur. x. u. isoDenson, editor of the Grange, responded to this in a highly appropriate manner. He indulged in complimentary remarks concerning all the firemen present, and returned thanks for the reception which Chester had given her guests. The next toast was, "the Fire Companies of Charlotte." This was responded to by our talented young townsman, Geo. E. Wilson, Esq., in handsome terms. Mr. Wilson well represented Charlotte, and -did credit to our city. The Fairfield Fire Engine Company, of Winnsboro." next proposed. This brought out Mr. Hamilton or Winnsboro, who spoke to the entertainment of all, and re flected credit upon his company. The Press" was neit toasted, and a handsome compliment from Mr, W. A. Hemphill, to the Charlotte Observe, brought the local editor of this paper to his feet. In a very few remarks he delegated the pleasant duty of replying to the toast, to Mr, Buchanan, of the Chester Reporter. This gentleman rose and -made a Bplendid speech. It was the most humorous event of the evening, and every sentence brought down the house. We wish we bad room for a synopsis of it, at least. Men who write well, it is said, do not usually, talk well, and we were, therefore, astonished at there- njajka pf our brother of the Reporter. ''Woman? was proposed, and Gen. W alker was asked to respond. He rose sad said he would entrust the matter to Mr. G. G. Stroub This gentleman, (a Chester fireman) gave the crowd a splendid talk. - His speech was humorous to the last degree. Several of his local hits were exceedingly happy, and no speech of the evening was listened to more carefully or enjoyed more, than this. Mr. McNinch was called upon, and made the best speech pf his life appropriate and eloquent. On his "native heath," he shed lustre upon his adopted: city, and upon the company of which he chief. Maj. Mills,, and the people of Chester, were toastedandcheered right heartily, and as to the remaining sentiments, this depon ent saith hot, for his memory began to fai here, his eye becanie dimmed, and Mb nat- aqu strength was abated.., , ,t - '- Some time during the night or morning, the Rockr Hill 'and Charlotte crowds got ''aoaiCtneirlralnrsaTg bid adieii to their hosts, and made a start for home. Our part of the crowd reached " that in teresting I spt'abbtit.30, ahd.otie aiding another, got from the tram to oed. We do not remember when we have ex Twienced a more iovous occasion. The I r - people ol Chester were all hospitality, and nothing that could be done to contribute to the enjoyment of their guests, was left un done. It gives us pleasure to assure our friends that all the Charlotte party left with the pleasantest impressions of the town and peo ple, and with the hope that they shall, one day or other, repeat the visit. We shall ex pect to see all that crowd in Charlotte on the 20th of May, and hope that we shall give them as good a time as they gave us. Temperance Lecture. Through inadvertence a notice of Mr. Theodore N. Ramsay's lecutre at the Court House on Monday night was omitted in our issue of yesterday. We now take pleasure in. stating that the meeting though, as usual only moderately well attended .was on the whole, more successful than was an ticipated. Beii; introduced by Col. E. A. Osborne, (who appropriately al luded to the noble work heretofore accomplished in Charlotte by Tem- Serance organizations, and ask a more earty support from those of our citi zens who desire the extension of mor ality and sobriety in the community.) Mr. Ramsay took the stand, and for more than an hour held his audience in close attention, exhibiting a min ute knowledge of his subject, fervid zeal, and free command of language eliciting frequent applause. At the close of the address six young gentlemen of the city united tfith the Order, and a number of members from other cities, at present residing in charlotte will connect themselves with Hesperian Lodge, increasing its strength. Mr. Ramsay lectured at Steel creek yesterday to a fine audience. He, in colnmon with multitudes of others, was surprised to note the rapid growth of. charlotte within a few yeajs. communicated. A Sane Lady in the South Carolina Asylum J Mb. Editob : Our tow has a topic of conversation, which disturbs its usual monotony. R,sv. 's wife was placed in the Co lumbia Asylum two weeks ago, where she is now confined in a cell. This affair occa sioned some surprise, as many doubts were entertained about her lunacy, although her ecclesiastical husband circulated this report. She says : "I'm not mad ! I'm not.mad ! My tyrant husband forged the tale That binds me in this cell, I'm not mad ! I'm not mad !" She was placed there under the cover of darkness by her husband. She has since written here a long, long letter. The Super intendent now doubts her lunacy and has written here. Some say her husband be lieves that she is, crazy and acting under that; belief, placed her in the Columbia Asy lum. She lived here 18 months, taught school, and gave satisfaction to her patrons. We regarded her as a little eccentric. She is a highly cultivated, and refined woman. Her husband is a minister of fine attain ments. We await future developements. If she is crazy, she has deported herself here like a quiet and discreet lady. More annon, JIM JONES. We forbear to give3 names and places. MARRIED. In Wadesboro, on the 14th inst., by the Rev. J, A.
