The cause, the eoun- tv. the State, is all worthv of the best- ser vices of the best men . IS ot withstanding the proscription, subju gation, disorder and confusion heaped upon us. and the total disregard of American freedom and liberty, we must show that there is yet in Mecklenburg county at least. (the birh-place ot Liberty and indepen dence) a true spirit of patriotism to be re kindled anew. May 20th, 1875. that shall never, be extinguished until it shall have first consumed much of the corruption that now exists in our country. Respectfully, Ac, H. P. Helper. . . An Old Deed. Our fellow-townsman, James Harty, Esq.. showed us, yesterday ,a land deed which, for antiauitv. is hard to beat. It is the title to the property in this city where that gentle man waa born, and was made in the year 1762. The property is where Mr. Conelius Myers now lives, on Tryon street, next to the residence of J. C. Burroughs, Esq. The indenture was made between Thomas Polk, Abraham Alexander and Jeremiah McCaf- erty of the one part, and David Beard of the other, the latter haying bought the property. This instrument of writing looks as old as the hills, and much of the ink; has become so faded as to render parts of it illegible. At the time it was penned, North Carolina was yet a province, not having entered the Amer ican Union, and it is herein provided that the covenantor Beard, "hie Heirs and Affigna, fhall, Annually, hereafter, on the Tenth Day of January in every year, pay unto the faid Thos. Polk. Abraham Alexander and JereraMiertylthehr Heirs or Affigna, the Annual Rent of One Shilling, Proclam ation Mbneyo? NinepenceiSCcrf- as a Ground Rent for the faid Lot or Piece ot Land," Ac. The old style of using f for s, prevailed at this time, as will be seen from the above ex tract. " Thomas Polk andAbraham Alexander were, it will be remembered, among tne signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, and this deed was drawn 13 years before these . patriots .affixed their names to that immortafinstrument. JCis pleasant to examine-such old documents, examine the contracts and writings of men who, more than a century ago, laid aside their earthly labors and fell before the sickle of the Great Reaper. A slight accident happened, yesterday morning, on the Hayes lot, on Trade street near the Air -Line- Dew; wher thw - Hibr foundry of dipt. John Wilkes is being built. A scaffold, 7 or 8 feet high, gave way, and precipitated Mr. Thos. J. Allison and several workmen, to the ground. They fell among bricks lying below the scaffold, and all were more or less bruised, but cone sustained any serious injury. Personal. .Col T M R Talcott arrived at the Central Hotel last eyening. Some days ago, we copied an article from the Aseeciate Reformed Presbyterian, concern ing a missionary meeting to be held at the A. R. Church, in this city, on Wednesday next, the 3d prox. We learn since, though we did not then understand what " mission ary party " was referred to, that the meet ing will be conducted by a Miss Galloway, who is just starting out as a missionary to Egypt, and who, on her way, stops at sev eral points, and holds series of meetinggs. There is a novelty, a freshnesss about this, which will interest. Joint Meeting of Fire Companies. HOBNET FlEE Co. HALLT January 30ih, 1874. Vance, repeated his lecture on the "Scattered Na tion," at the new Opera House in Colum bia, S. C, on Thursday eyening. The Phcenix of the next morning, contained the following very handsome notice of it : The lectnre of Governor Vance was a splendid and learned tribute to tne virtues and accomplishments, and an admirable vindication of the manhood of the Jewish people. His picture of their power and prosperity, when the liberty of the citizen, the purity of the family, and the grandeur of the State were developed and assured by institutions moulded by the hand of God himself, were only surpassed by the pathetic and indignant descriptions of the persecu tions and ignominy to which they had been subjected ever since their greatness was broken, and they were dispersed oyer all the earth. He presented them as not only the depositaries of the truth of God, but exam- plars of the noblest principles of govern ment. He contended that the characteris tics which had marked them in the obliteia- tion of their nationality, in the wandering life to which they had been condemned, in the face of the most odious and cruel sus picions and aversions entertained against them, should excite wonder that they it ere no worse, rather than condemnation and conte mot: Through, all persecution and scorn they had lived, and though scattered. were to-day the same distinctive, peculiar people, strong in resources, eminent in tal ent, learning, morality and eloquence, and holding in their hands the destinies , and control of the most powerful States and empires. A highly appreciative audience hung upon the speaker's lips, as he portray ed their excellencies, pleaded for sympathy, charity, and justice towards them, and. pre dieted the brighter days yet in store for the sons and daughters of Israel. His discourse was seasoned with inimitable touches of wit and humor, and spiced and peppered with telling hits' at the times." New MvertisemeEts.
