The Mayor had no cases before him yes terday, which amounted to anything. This is Sexagesima Sunday, and the day's length is 10 hours and 47 minutes. Out again yesterday dunning fellows for money for the church. What has become of the cotton factory Charlotte was to have some time ago. Yesterday was dull, but last week, tike i for all in all, was good for items. When shall we look upon its like again ? t It is rumored that Katie Putnam will be back here daring the Centennial Celebra- ion. Fine shad have been selling in our market for several days, but they taste too strong of greenbacks, for ye Observer to get fishy. ' See the advertisement of Dr. Clopton, to be found in another column. The Dr. comes here with a reputation which he is not ashamed of. Go to church to-day. "A day in Thy courts is better than a thousand : yea, I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness." Bal masquers, are getting their toggery ready for the Mardi-Gras Balt-which comes off at the Central Hotel next Tuesday night We examine our invitation about six times a day, and wish the wheels of time would roll on more rapidly. Since there is to be no Mardi-Gras at New Orleans this year, Memphis, Mobile and Galveston, each vie with the other in trying to get up the biggest affair in honor of King Moruus. Very litlle, so far as we know, is said about a visit to either by Charlotteans. We want to say to our friend Polk, of the Ansoninn, that he can recover the five cents which we borrowed from him, if be will drawn on us at sight through any of the citv Danks. Poor as we are, we are meeting our paper as it falls due. We have been informed that the concert at the Opera House on Thursday night, by the ladies of the Episcepal Church, netted one hundred and ninety-five dollars. We subsequently saw five dollars slip into the treasury, in order to make the figures even. and we now write the sum two hundred. What shall we have next ? Owing to the excessive wet weather our planters are unable to bring that little cot ton tbev have left. Thirteen and three- quarters was the top of the market yester day. nmnsboro Newi, oi Thursday. Melancholy Death. On last Thursday, Mrs. Julia Kerr, form erly a resident of this State, but more re cently of Texas, who bad been prostrated on a bed of sicknees only a few days, died un der very melancholy circumstances. She was, we learn, the sister of the wife of Mr. G. W. Byers, who liyes a few miles West of Mount Mourne, in Iredell County. Mrs. Byers died a few months ago, leaving three very small duJ4ren Mrs. vKerr had come all the way from Texas, for the purpose of taking the little children to her home in that State, when was attacked by pneumonia After an illness of a few days, she died,' and the loving husband in Texas, instead of go ing to the train to meet the wife of his bos om, and the three children of his wife's dead sister, will be called upon to meet the body of his late wife, who so lately left him. in all the pride of health, packed in a metallic coffin. Mrs. Kerr, was well and favorablv known in Charlotte, where she long resided. and where her womanly virtues were known and appreciated. The DeCastro Troupe. This company is announced to giye a series of its refined and pleasing entertainments at the Opera House, commencing Friday, the 12th inst. DeCastro is io stranger to our amusement loving public, and other mem bers of his troupe are spoken of in" the high est terms by the press. The followme is from the Mobile Register : "The farewell performances of this capital troupe, were given in opposition to even greater storm and dampness than has afflict ed all moving things for tne rest of the week. 8till the performances went on as if 'all was lovely.' The matinee yesterday was a sur prise to everyone (as was that on Christmas day) both in quantity and quality ; and all present at both went home with a firm con viction that DeCastro, Jeppe and Fannie are by long odds the "strongest team that have pulled people through rain and mud to see them lor many years in these parts. as a neat and hnisbed professor of black art, and as a quaint and deceptive ventrilo quist, DeCastro has no equal, and he leaves here with the record ot a 'square and liberal businessman, a ho keeps his promises both in letter and spirit. Jeppe, as a character comique, has made a moat pronounced hit ; most who have seen him declare him fully the equal of Lingard, while the celerity of his compleie chances of dress are not surpassed by any on the stage. Miss Fannie, both hisconjutor in "Char acter Duets," and in her staff bell solos has been greeted with much applause and inva riable encores : and as a whole the party uive as neat, delicate and entertaining an evening as any one would desire to spend." The Four Terms of Court for Mecklen burg. Those who have closely observed the Leg islative proceedings, have seen that the bill providing for four annual terms of Court in this county, instead of two, has passed and the bill has now become a law. In accordance with the provisions of the bill a commission assembled at the Court House yesterday to summon a jury to try causes at the Court which is to meet on the 1st Monday In March.
