Yesterday had the appearance, at times, of an Indian Summer day ThJ first extra term of Superior Court, un der the new law, begins. next Monday. Old Probs proposes to giye us colder and rainy weather to-day. Spare us ! W. 8. Norment, Esq., of Paw Creek Town ship, slipped on the ice last Friday morn ing, and fa ling, broke his right arm near the shoulder. " Fer he was alius sich a liar," i3 the reas on an old lady assigned for advising one of our citizens to put his eldest son to the study of law, . iilciouas' which" overspread the skies yesterday, disappeared last night, to an ex tent sufficient to allow Queen Mab to shine out with glorious brightness. Oh ! it was a lovely night, and so pleasant. The pay train on the Air Line .Railroad arrived yesterday evening, in charge of pay master W. R. Biggers, and paid off the em ployees of the road for the month of Jan uary. The Independent Hook and Ladder Comr pany met at it? hall las", evening, and by a majority votp, tendered the use of the hall to the Pioneers, for their hop on Monday night next. We asked of a gentleman, yesterday, about a friend of oars who was formerly a reve nue officer, if he was still guaging ? "No," said he, "he is sampling now," and he walked off. hamming, "when the swallowers homeward fly." We intend to kill that correspondent of the Alexandria Sentinel, so soon as we can ascertain who he is. for rankine Charlotte as the third place in Lhe State in the number of its pretty girls. He did not have ot his "Specs," or he would have found out that she stands first in that particular. The play of Tuesday night was the topic of conversation on the streets yesterday. The opinion is unanimous that Mr. 4dams displayed a great deal of artistic genius, but the hope is universally entertained that, when he omes aain. it will be with a bet ter company. His support this season is so bad as to be almost no support at all. The Prevailing: Quietude. Now, by the beard of the prophet, the freedom from fights, broken noses and fres coed countenances, which has characterized this part of the moral vineyard recently, is getting rather monotonous to us. As a phil- anthropist.and always ambitious of the pub lic good, we rejoice at it, but ;is a reporter, by Jove, it don't suit us pretty well. Personal. Gov. Vance returned to the city yesterday morning, after a tour in the South ; during his absence, he lectured in Atlanta, Ga., Sel ma and Montgomery, Ala. Col. John B. Peck, Master of Transporta tion Air Line Railroad, arrived, yesterday evening, in this city, and i-j stopping at the Central Hotel. W. J. Boylin, Esq., of ihc Monroe Enquir er, arrived at the Central Hotel last evening. The Boy den House, Salisbury. The Boyden House in Salisbury, has re cently been opened to the traveling public, under the management of Mr W. T. Linton, and reports that we have had from there in dicate that the hotel, as kept at present, is oetter than under any former management. Mr, L has shown that he knows how to keep a hotel, and we feel that the old Boy den will not suffer in jeputation, while he runs th machine. Accommodation, for Sure . Not long ago, a merchant in this city stepped into a neighboring store to get $5 changed. There was onlv one clerk in the store, and he, after examining the money drawer, told the merchant that he did not have it, but if he would mind the store, he (the clerk) would go out and get it changed for him. He ran all over that whole section of the city for about 15 minutes, and finally returned with the change. That clerk was from the country very lately, and had the spirit of accommodation implanted in his bosom. The New Paper. Little has been said recently of the new daily paper which it was announced Mr. Mc- Sween, late of the Fayetteville Eagle, would shortly start in Charlotte. Mr. McS. was in the city some days ago, however, and we learn that he then purchased the presses, type fixtures, fec, of the Bu letin, from its proprietor Mr. E. H. Britton. He has also made his arrangements for tele graphic dispatches. When he left here it was with the intention of returning' some time this week. We do not know whether or no the trade of which we speak has been fully consummated, but Mr. McSween and Mr. Britton have been negotiating, and an understanding has been arrived at between tbem. We hear that it is the intention of the new proprietor to issue the first number of his paper next week, bnt this is mere rumor We are not adyised what the name of the paper will be. ? The bad habit obtains iere,,f among many business men who buy.wood, of having 'it thrown off in the streeC'.i, front 'of their places oi business. Thenegro who is em ployed to cut it, invaria61y turns his ' face to the pavement, and amuses himself by look ing at the passers-by, . and shelling . them with chips. Yesterday. ?a gentleman was passing along Trade street, while a negro was chopping wod in the gutter; a chip struck him on the side j of the face, and brought the blood Orconrse the" injury was not serious nor very . painful, but the chip might have hit him is the eye and put it out. But even if Ho one were ever hurt by this means, it is not pleasant toi be dodg ing hither and thither, to ayoid being struck ; no more is it pleasant to walk oyer pave ments covered with chipsi We call the at tention of the police to the matter, ; r 7:. . . , The Need of Water Vrk8.. That Charlotte is in neel of better water facilities, Is a proposition which wiTTh'ot "be denied ; yet, while every ope acknowledges that they are needed, no steps are taken to ward securing them. Some say that the cost of water works would be too great ; that the city, in its present impoverished condi tion, cannot afford them, &c. There is such a thing as being "penny wise and pound foolish." There is no telling at what mo. ment a destructive conflagration will break out on one of our principal business streets, and when it does, how shall the flames be fctayed? At present, the city is absolutely at the mercy of the n re. We have a few tanks in the street? near the centre of the city but how long will th" ir supply of "water last ? About two hours- We all saw how it was in September, when three small houses on Trade street were burned. The water in the tanks was exhausted long be fore the flames were subdued, and, had it not been that the tauk in the yard of the Cen tral Hotel was convenient, it can hardly be imagined where the cad wou jI hive been. It is ail very well to taik about well organ ized and well equipped fire companies, (nnd Charlotte has four of. these) ; but if thev have nothing wherewith to quen.h flames, of what service are they ? Fine engine will not do it; neither will hooks and ladders Water is necessary, and this we have not. Water works are jnct ps much a component part of a city as numerous and fine stores) ctiun'hes and dwellings, aud there can be ho city without them. Every one must and does realize t he need, and yet no steps are taken to supply it. 8ome months ago, the Mayor was in correspon dence with a party in (7harl?ston, in refer ence to this matter, and we hoped that some thing would grow out of it; but it seems to have been dropped, and more's the pity. .It is a measure of importance which has been long enough delayed. We call the at tcntion of our city authorities to it, and, in behalf of the people, ask them to take action ou it, at. as early a day as possible - - A Runaway Match and Ail About It. Charlotte had a genuine runaway match yesterday morningt the parties to it being Mr Wm. Gibson, of this taty, and Miss Sallie Julian, of Lexington, S. C. Their affection for each other, dates back over some period of time, but the objections of the lady's relatives, thwarted their matrimonial designs until yesterday Miss Julian lived in the family of her brother-in-law, Mr. John C. Sweeney, of this city, and was a puj i! at the school of Mrs. Clartsoo. All persuasion having failed to move the obdu rate relatives, an eiopement was planned, and, although repeated attempts have been made to have it consummated, these,, were all unsuccessful until yesterday, " So intent was the now groom upon mar rage, that he and his friends made several attempts, on Monday night ,to snatch the now bride from her "home, and waited around the place nearly all night with a close carriage. This device failed, but "love laughs at bars," and failure only stimulated our hero to renewed exertions. Failing. in this attempt to steal hr directly from home, he began on a new tack. Yesterday morning Miss Julian started to school as usual, calico dress 011, and books under arm. Stopping , at a 4iouse on th e way, she took the calico Ironi dverv a dress, of better material, and leaving it there,' sauntered on down East Church street, to ward the school house.
