Some try to avoid disclosing tbe fact that in any way "I am interested," but still, eyi- dence to prove the contrary will crop out. This man and that man, this favorite and that favorite are spoken of to fill this office or another, and if not him, then it is "cer tainly" some other- At two or three differ ent corners one can hear u suggestion ss to who is the "best man" at almost any hour of the day. Our Man Rosenthal, Again. On Tuesday night Mr Jas B Angle, of Wittkowsky A Rintels' wholesale depart ment, went over to Salisbury to identify the man who was here last week and bought a quantity of goods for which he never paid. The man bad already been arrested as a sus picious character by the police of that place, as he was about taking the same train on which Mr .ingle arrived. He was instantly identified, and the papers haying been serv ed, on him, he was put in jail. He will be brought to Charlotte on Friday morning and confined in prison. He ' did not deny his identity, but gave no explanation of his strange conduct while in Charlotte, in eaiisDury ne gave nis name as jonn Harris, and professed to represent a boot and shoe house in Baltimore. He is a man about SO years of age, and ia smart and well posted. He showed no signs of excitement when told that he must go to jail, but ac cepted tbe situation gracefully. There were several men in Salisbury on Tuesday who were suspected by citizens of being accom plices of Rosenthal alias Harris, but these all left on the night train. Rosenthal or Harris, went from here to Concord, and thence to Salisbury, on Tuesday morning's express. . - An Interesting Calculation. A night or two ago a merchant from a neighboring town was in one of our leading dry goods stores, when he and one of the clerks began discussing the number ef pairs of pantaloons lying in a pile on a shelf. The clerk proposed to the merchant a bet, that if the first pair was sold for one cent, and the price doubled on each other pair, there would not be money enough in the world to buy the lot A bet of $100 l side was made, the pants counted and the calcu lation made. There was found to be ISO pairs in the pile. The first pair was to cost one cent, the second pair two, the third four, the fourth eight, the fifth sixteen, fec When the 150th pair of pants was reached, it required 45 figures to show tbe cost. The figures are as follows, and we submit them, to the public forjenumeration: $2,676,533,125, 853,377,750,486,882,524,580. 722,689,158,222,08. The question then arose : how to find out how much money there is in the world? Of course no satisfactory solution of this ques tion could be reached, and the bet was com promised upon the merchant agreeing to treat the whole crowd of clerks to cigars. He did so, and to get the information con tained in the above figures, cost him $3.75. But we have to pay for getting our knowl edge, and the merchant, while acknowl edging that he had been taken in, shelled out like a little man, and "stood cigars for the crowd" without batting his eyes. An fcxeeptiou to tbe General Rule. The Wilmington train has made another through trip, after having been blocked up for about ten days by a slide. She had to plow through the mud, but she made the trip after all and got into Charlotte yester day morning, There is one place in the road, about four miles from Charlotte, where the train has ran Toff many times ; and if it ever passes safely over this place, conductor, engineer and every train hand is astonished. Tuesday night about 12 o'clock the train was moving slowly over this bad place, the mud about a foot and a half deep, when the colored fireman called to Ben. Marsh, the engineer : "Stop ! Btop ! she's off !" The engineer blew brakes and held up. He sent the fireman out to see bow bad was the run off, and directly he returned and reported that three of the wheels of the tender had slipped from the track. "Well," said, Jarsh, "no use trying to do anything to-night; we'll just haye to camp till morning ; that's all there is of it," and he crawled back into the baggage car and went to sleep. - Yesterday morning when it got light, he went out to ascertain the exact extent of the run off and to calculate how long it would take to replace her on the track. And "thar she sot," as square on the rails as eyer an engine did in the world, and nothing un der the sun the matter. Maybe there wasn't some tall swearing done down on tbe line of the Carolina Cen tral Railroad yesterday morning, and may be Ben Marsh and Capt Everitt, the con ductor, didn't "take a hand." The Supreme Court on Monday rendered decisions in cases from this and neighbor ing counties as follows. , We extract from The Leonard Scott Publishing Company, 41 Barclay Street, NeW York, have just re published the Edinburgh Review for January. The first article takes np Mr. Mill's last work, which was reviewed with great praise by a writer in; the Westminster Review for January, and argues with much earnestness against the materialistic opinions therein proclaimed, on the origin of all things, the nature of man, and the being and attributes of God. In the second article Lord Ellenborough is described as a weak and vain man, and many instances are given of his want of sa gacity and good sense. 7 Those who know .Leonardo da Vinci only as an artist, will be surprised on reading the account of his career here given, to find thai he was equally, if not more eminent, as physiologist, engineer, and mathematician ; that he was a skilled laborer in eyery de partment; that he invented numerous me chanical appliances; and that he was "chief-, ly artist to the generation in which he lived, because the arts were the only form of his activity then generally in demand," Four of the remaining articles are devc ted to topics whicb like that of the first, bave been discussed in one or more of the other Reviews, It is one of the advantages Joint Meeting of Fire Companies.
