It is worth your while to hear a certain well known and most efficient policeman, of this city, tell about his experience at j church not a great while ago. He is an Irishman and a devout Catholic,' and one Sunday morning, after having been on duty all night, he went to church without having Blept his usual amount. He happened to be sitting by another Irishman, a red-headed. high tempered fellow, named Barney. The church was crowded, and iu a few moments after the "praste" began his discourse, our policeman's eyes began to wane, and soon ! he began to nod. This evidently annoyed the priest very much, and the frequent glances which he cast in the direction of the sleeping custodian of tbe peace, attracted to him the attention of the whole congrega tion. Finally, annoyed beyond endurance, the priest broke off in the middle of his sermon, . and, pointing toward the Bleeping worshipper, exclaimed, "Wake up that man P' Mike had not got so far that he did not hear - this.' He looked up and saw tbe priest's eyes turned on him, but he was not yet wide enough awak! to fully take in the situation. He knew somebody had been sleeping, and, to use his own words, "Jes as God-would luvtw it, I racbed around and cart Barney, who was wide awake, don't ye see, and niver was a mon got sich a shakin' as I did give the poor divil." r'. He shook him until he himself was thoroughly j aroused by the exercise and the tittering of I the congregation, and then the services pro ceeded but they did not conduce to the re ligious growth of either of the participants in this soene, for one was too tickled and the other too mad. "When church was over," .said 3ike, "there was Barney a-waitin' at the door for a fight, an' he niver forgive me to his dying day, God rist his sowl." j And Mike gave one of his good-natured honest, broad Irish smiles, as he re-lighted i his pipe, struck a lamp-post with his billy, and started off over his ward.
