Sunday was a fine day, and the people of Charlotte, proverbially a church-going . peo ple, turned out to the different churches in greater force than usual. ' ; ' The street force was at work yesterday af ternoon, putting a rock curbing along Col lege street, from the corner of Trade. Some thing that is not being done too soon. We learn by 'telegram that the block of freight at Greensboro was cleared out last night. Between 20J and 300 car loads had accumulated there as much as . the side tracks could hold. John Owens' coming is beginning to be yery much discussed. He will be here on the night of the 0th prox., and if every re served seat is hot taken, we shall never un derstand why. We direct attention to the big advertise ment of Mr Allen, the jeweler. He has late ly become a citizen of Charlotte, and we hope he will be favored , wtli his share of business. Railroad e'erks are suffering. Three freight trains came into Charlotte over the North road on Sunday, two yesterday, and one las1 night ; all of thenj heavily loaded. We art informed that Mr. John Shelby, a citizen whd lives in the Southern portion of Mecklenburg, on last Saturday got his hand caught in a cotton gin, the saws of which toreoff his right, thumb and index finger, The rest of his hand was badly mangled, but it is thought that it can be saveJ. One f the Effects Of the change of gauge has been to bring more new railroad men to Charlotte. Rich mond fc' Danville railroadists come now where before we had: only the old North Carolina Railroad crowd. One thing about it we don't like: Capt, Dave Ligon's run will be changed. Hitherto he has been running the day train between Charlotte and Greensboro, getting in here at night at 9 o'clock He was one of our most valued auxiliaries for he always had the local his torian in his mind, and he hs brought us lots of items we would never have gotten but for him. He's as good a fellow, as he is a conductor. i. . . - - -Mutilated Currency. ... The following is of local as well as gener al interest: -The Secretary of the Treasury has decided to return to the old method of redeeming mutilated United States currency, under which a deduction was made propor tioned to the portion of the notes missing. The change will take effect on the 1st prox imo. The old system) was changed by Sec retary Bootw ell, who established the system now In operation, under which three-fifchs or more of a note is redeemed for its full face valu6, while smaller fragments are not redeemable at all unless proof is presented that the missing portions are totally destroy, The operation of this rule has proved unsat isfactory to the officers of the department, who Laye accordingly determined to ieturn to the more stringent regulation formerly in force, i . . , i . A Compliment to the Observer. It is not our enstom to publish everything of a complimentary' nature which is said of us by pur contemporaries, but the following from.the Rockjngham Spirit' of the Smith is EO very handsomely said, and seems, withal, to be so heartfelt, that we ask pardon for transferring it to our columns. The Spirit of the South says : ' The Charlotte Obsebvkr has lately as sumed larger proportions and is now rank ing with the best dailies in the State. Mr. Jones is fast fulfilling his promise made last Fall of making the Observer one of the best daily papers irt the South, and if we are any judge, it will riot be long before his ob ject will be complete, With the aid of a generous and .discriminating public, there will be no doubt of the success ot the Ob server,! and we cheerfully ask for it that pa tronage at the hands of our people which it deserves. Capt Harry returned home Sunday morn ing, having accomplished, as we are gratified to. know, the object of his visit. He secured the promise, from Goy Brogden, of 60 guns, (breech-loaders) which were shipped yester day and will reach Charlotte to-morrow morning. Two pieces of artillery have also been secured from the State arsenal, to be used in Charlotte on the occasion of the Centennial celebration. These are Impound er Napoleon guns (brass), new and in perfect order, with all appurtenances, : Capt Harry learned, while in Raleigh, that both the military organizations of that city, will certainly be in Charlotte at the Centen nial, and are already perfecting their ar rangements for the occasion . ' " The Feast of Pulum. One of the most joyous of the Hebrew fes tivals, began at sunset on Saturday, and closed at sunset yesterday. It is a popular festival, i t imposes no obligations which are bur densome. Mordecai, the hero of the incidents commemorated, only com manded the Hebrews of his day ''to observe the 14th and also the 15th days of the month Adar, which were turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning unto a good day ; that they should make them days of feasting and of joy and of sending gifts to the poor." It is also called the Fast of Esther, in commemoration of her fasting three days and nights before she went to supplicate the King for the deliverance of the Jews, who were marked out for destruction by Hainan. Esther interceded with the King in behalf of her people, and her entreaties were successful. The royal edict of whole sale destruction was revoked, and, as the Book of Esther says, "The day of mourning was turned into a day of gladness, the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad, and the Jews had light, and gladness, and joy, and honor." And It was commanded "that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, that these days of Purlin should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perif h f onii their seed." The Purium festival was celebrated last night by the Israelites of Charlotte, with a hop at the Jewish club rooms. A Card from Passengers. On last Wednesday morning, a number of passengers (abo ut 35) who had been detain ed here by the changing of the gauge of the North Carolina Railroad, left by way of Wilmington for the North, in care of Capt George Morrison as conductor. Arriving there, they addressed us the following card . ? Mt. Editor : As travellers for pleasure, we left Jacksonville, Fla., for the North six days ago, and arrived at Charlotte where we were compelled to stop on account of the track being taken up between Charlotte and Greensboro. We found pleasant accommo dations at the Central , Hotel, and took the Carolina Central Railroad for Wilmington, with Capt. George Morrison in charge of the train. The road is very bad frm Charlotte to Monroe, but here we were transferred to magnificent cars. The road from there is good, and we arrived at Wilmington on good time, when the passengers met and passed resolutions complimenting the officers of the road, for the prompt manner in which they were put through from Char lotte. ; We would recommend this route to all our friends, and would especially com mend to them the train that Capt. Morrison has charge of. ' He is one ; of the most effi cient and energetic and thorough conductors we have ever met, and is the right man in the right place. DIED.
