This company began work in good earnest
yesterday morning, by starting a trench, for
the reception of the pipe, from the corner of

by night-fall, and a portion of the pipe was

We Want
A picture of the man who was talked o t
death. We desire to place it on our coat,
that the printing office loafer may see it and
spare us. Even if it does not cause him to
have mercy upon us, the memory of that
picture will haunt him after we are gone,
and it is a melancholy consolation to us to
know this. We want the picture.

Fix the Bridge
The bridge in the middle of East Tryon
street, in front of the Lutheran Church, is
in a dangerous condition,Jthere being in it a
large hole which is likely to be the cause,
yet, of some animal breaking its leg, unless
it is soon fixed. Day before yesterday, a
horse, while being driven over; the bridge,
stepped into the hole, which is at least four
feet deep, and escaped having his leg bro
ken, almost by a miracle. The condition
of this bridge demands the instant attention
of the Street Commissioner.

On Thursday, Mr; A. H. Creswell's little
son, who goes to scnooi to Miss jNisbet, in
the " gmithville" section of the city, obr
tained, in some unknown manner, a quan

B. Taylor, and the other two, sons of Mr.
Richard Morse, who ate a small portion of
it, and almost instantly became very sick,
and began vomiting violently. Mr. Morse's
two children were made quite ill and suffer
ed considerably ; Capt. Taylor's boy did not
eat so much of the poisonous drug, and was
not, therefore, so much affected. . The chil
dren were not dangerously poisoned, and all
were able to be up yesterday.
A specimen of the drug was afterwards
carried to Dr. T. Scarr, " who examined it
and pronounced it to be bi-cfaromate of pot
ash. - It is very poisonous, but so very offen

Whipping Out Five Cents Worth;-; !
Night 'before last, two fashionably dressed
darkies called at a certain lager beer saloon,
in this city, and called for two beers, i These
wpra drawn.' and. having been : drank, the
on who called for them laid five cents on
the counter, and started out. The beer man
reminded him that five cents more was due,
to which' the negro responded that he didn't
have it, at the same time calling on his com
panion to know if he had five cents. He
was answered in' the negative, and . started
out pretty rapidly! when the beerist drew a
long cow-hide from under the counter, Btep
ped around and sailed into him. , The negro
retreated with 'all possible ' haste, notly puis-
sued by the avenger, whose masterly exer
cise of the raw-hide stimulated him to a
display of a great deal of. alacrity in yacat
ne the . nremisesV It was ; only : when the
negro was ': outside the door, I up the steps
and fairly npon the pavement, that the irate
bar tender ceased to shower his ' blows, and
returned to the sanctuary... r0. ; ,
IThoueh the two glasses of beer cost but a
pittance in money, it is estimated ;that !the
Vincidehtal'r! expenses pr that vlmbibation
amounted to about $15, in the estimation of
the darkey.
An Important Decl.ion ;
