At this, the opening of the Summer sea son, when business is growing slack, the railroads have begun to reduce their forces. The Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Rail road has discharged 150 of its employees- six at the depot in this city ; it has also sus pended the daily freight train between Char lotte and Columbia, and a tri-weekly freight only, is now run The North Carolina Rail road has reduced its working force all along me line; Bye employees have been cut off here at the Charlotte depot. Our valued exchange, the Wadesboro Herald, has entered upon the fifth year of its existence, and celebrates the eyent by putting on a new Euit of clothes, which is very becoming indeed. This new dress and its well filled advertising columns tpeak of the paper's prosperity. No one rejoices more than we in these evidences of its success ; we have a very warm side for the Herald. and are glad that it is doing so well. We would, by the by, suggest that it is a capital advertising sheet for our merchants, reach ing as it does the best people in the Pee Dee section. The CcuteuLlal Illustrated. Yesterday morning. Harpers WeeUy. con taining a report of the Mecklenburg Centen nial Celebration, together with a view of the crowd in Tryon Street, and that on the Fair Grounds, was received at the book stores in this city. The report of the exer cises is quite accurate and very fair, but the illustrations are execrable. We are surpris ed that a publication, professing to stand as hih as Harper's Weekly does, should admit such infamously poor cuts into its columns Not only are they destitute of accuracy, but the execution of the workis such as a cross roaas paper might be ashamed of. . We had an idea before this, that the publishers of the Weekly held that whatever was worthy being illustrated at all, was worthy of being illustrated well. Such, however, seems not to be the case. " ; The Bottling of Soda Wa ter. We witnessed, yesterday afternoon. Mr T W West's process of bottling soda water, at his establishment in rear of Vogel's tailor shop. The machinery of the establishment is au perfect. The bottles are placed with mouths downward, into a receptacle, and the moving of a lever forces the soda water into them. The stopper, with its head cov ered with india rubber: is already, in the bot tie, and when -this is filled the stopper is forced tightly into the mouth of the bottle. When it is desired to open it, the ; stopper must be forced in, as it cannot be drawn out. A bottle is filled and corked in almost a sec ond. . x he soda water is of a very superior quality. , Mr West has recently moved here from Atlanta, Ga where he lost his all by a nre which swept that part of the city Where his business was located. - ' Appletou's New Cyclopaedia. we naa a personal call yesterday from H H Key, Esq., who Is agent for this greatest of .imeiican publications, ' ; no w ' be ing issued by D Appleton & Co., of New ort.
