W call attention to the advertisement of
Miss L. Stuart, to be found among our new,
advertisements this morning.' She is very
skillful In - all the work which she under
takes, and a specimen now before? us con-
rhe tat est on the Centennial.
Our down east neighbor of the Wilm ing
ton Star, tells this one :
"There was yesterday on exhibition at the
city Marshal's office a strange and mysteri
ous freak of nature. It was an egg of rather
a peculiar appearance, the shell being very
rough and somewhat resembling stone,
Traced around the surfaca in letters of an
tique shape were the words, 'Mecklenburg
Centennial. May 20th, 1875.' ' A view of the
egg impresses one with the idea that he is
looking upon a paper writing struck off by
nature to prove the authenticity of the
Mecklenbure ' Centennial. It seems to be
really an egg and rather an extraordinary
one that A Centennial egg it is called and
we were told it would keep fresh for a nun
dred years. Probably an egg so fresh as
that, would be hardly palatable. However
that is not claimed for it as so far there has
been no opportunity of testing its peculiar
properties in this respect. If there was any
probability of its being so, we should advise
the cessation of the salt business immediate
ly. However this egg was not- at the Cen
tennial, the meana of transportation not
being sufficient to get it there in time, une
story, as told us, goes thus r The egg was
produced in a small country village in New
Hanover county." It appears that the inhabi
tants of the village the day before the 20th
were preparing to have a slice of the Cen
tennial served up on the following day.' The
rooster saw how things were goipg and
sharpened up his spurs, flappped his wings,
gave a crow, and took the ..train for Char
lotte. The identical hen that laid the egg
in question, was noticed strutting around
the yard as if listening attentively to sev
eral spread-eagle speeches, with a decided
disposition to hurrah for the Centennial.
The egg was laid shortly afterwards.

Good-night! I have to say good-night .
To such a host of peerless things !
Good-night unto that fragile hand
All queenly with its weight of rings ;
Gocd-night to tond, uplilted eyes,
Good-night to chestnut braids of hair,
Good-night unto the perfect month,
And all tne sweetness nestled there
The snowy hand detains me; then
I'll have to say good-night again !
But there will come a time my love,
When, if I read our stars aright,
I shall not linger bv this porch
With my adieus. Till then, good-night I
You wish the tame were now C And J,
You do not blush to wish it so ?
You would have blushed yourself to, death
To own so much a year ago
What, both these snowy Hands I ah then
