' V';.-r There is great complaint: in , this city, at present, of the stringency of money matters and the assiduity with which collectors are dunning, is only equaled py the assiduity with which debtors don't pay up. . We acknowledge the courtesy of an invi tation to accompany the picnic excursion of the Tryon Methodist Sunday School, which picnic takes place to-day at Limestone Springs, S. C. : , There is a young man in this city, whose head looks like a cyrahng and who33 nose looks like a tooth pick. He combs his head with a clothes brush and parts his hair with a pair of scissors. We are glad to know that the authorities are taking very vigorous steps in the matter of the enforcement, of the sanitary regula tions. ; Major -Johnston is - visiting, in per son, many of lue impure localities in the city, and seeing'to it Ih'at they are put fn" better condition.., " , , v . The proprietors of the Danville News and the Charlotte Tobacco Leaf and Cotton Plant, announce to their readers that they have agreed upon a consolidation of those jour nals, and' will henceforward publish a new paper thus formed, from the office of the News in Danville. The Wheai Crotf . Some of the farmers of this section are now cutting their wheat. From what- we can gather by conversation with a number of them, we con3lude tnat the crop will be about an average one. The searon has been very favorable, a general thing, fcr the wheat crop, and those who sowed judicious ly will reap a good harvest. Dr. Plumer Resigns hla Professorship. We see from the Columbia Phceaix, that Rev Wm S Plumer, D D, who ministered last Summer,' to the congregation of the Second Presbyterian Church, of this city, Professor of Didactic and Polemic Theology in the Theological Seminary, of Columbia, has resigned his chair. Subsequently Rev. John L Girardeau, was elected to fill the va cancy. Then and Only Then. The morbid principle in the nature of most business men, which induces them to write their advertisements in the morning , and wait until night to send them into the news paper offices, when all hands are busy on ocal and telegraphic news, is one of those things which will only be explained to the satisfaction of journalists, when the time comes to unveil ' all the mysteries of this rid. Cobt of Sending Money Orders. The following table shows the rates of commission charged by. the postoffice de partment for money orders, which may be of interest to our merchants and others : On orders not exceeding $10 05; over $10 and not exceeding $20 10 ; over $20 and no eaft'. ceeding $30 15 ; oyer $30 and not exceeding .$40 iJO; over 40 and not exceeding $50 25. One of the best journalists in North Caro lina, Bi. M. Furman,. Personal. ''Miss Belle Boyd and sister, Martinsburg, Va.," were registered last night at the Cen tral HoteL The name of Belle "Boyd; the Twan of Arc of the Confederacy,, is fainiliaf with every one who knows anything of the history of the late war between the States, J T Patrick. Esq.: of the WadesbOro LTera'd is at the Charlotte Hotel. Capt B J Witherspoon, of Lancaster, S C Secretary of the Chester and Cheraw Nar row Gauge Railroad, and Capt D J Carter, editor of the Lancaster Ledger, are at the Central New Law Firm. We ask for attention to the advertisement of our young friends, Messrs T II Brem, Jr., and F I Osborne, who have just formed a co-partnership for the practice of law. They are both "native here and to the manner born." Their talents are well known and both are highly and justly popular. Mr Brem received his license and 1 has had an omce here lor a year : Mr Osborne was licensed by the Supreme Court on Tuesday last, We sincerely wish the young gentle men success in their chosen vocation, and industry, commensurate with their natural abilities and their learning, will secure this to them in abundant measure. Comparative Earnings. "' ' TVpm a statement furnished to the Board of County Commissioners at. their recent meeting, by Col W R Myers, President of the Atlantic, xennessee & Ohio .Railroad, we learn that the earnings of that road for the month' of April,-1&74, amounted ttf$2,804:47; for the same month, 1875, $3,923.71an in crease in fayor of April, '75, of $1,119.24. The earnings for May, '74, were $2,511.88 for May, '75, $4,002.83 an increase in favor of May '75, S 1,490.95, This statement speaks well for Col Myers; administration; and induces the hope that. with continued wise management, the road may yet be saved to its stockholders. , 4 Temperance Lodges Disbanded. We learn, aud with regret, that all the temperance organizations of this city, have disbanded. There yet remain a few of the "faithful among the faithless," and these propose to sell out the furniture and other eftects of the society which died last Hes perian Lodge of Good Templars. Like a good many other things, a periodical temper ance fever rages in the country; when a com munity has it ,at all, it has it bad, and when the fever dies out, it leaves the cause as flat as old ale. We hold the opinion, howeyer, that temperance societies do good, and hold ing this opinion, are sorry to note their de cline. ... Fine Tobacco. Amid the pressure of other and more im portant matters, we have neglected to no tice, the smoking tobacco advertised by Messrs J M Mendel & Co., manufactured by W H Trowbridge, Esq., of Danville. There are several brands, one of which the "Best" is not unicnown to Charlotte smokers, hav ing taken the highest premium; at the Fair of the Carolinas in 1870. So far from deter ioration, it - is represented ' to us -that the manufacturer is very particular about keep ing his brands up to the standard. He man ufactures several other brands, which a bet ter idea of the quality eaa-ie obtained by reference to the advertisement of '.Messrs J M Ifendel & Co,, tobacconists and cigar manufacturers to be found in another col umn. - - V"""t" The Pioneer Picnic. We acknowledge j an invitation from ;FjA McNinch, Esq., the President of the Pioneer Steam-Fire Com pany, to attend the picnic which the com pany will give on the 17th ihst.. at Wood- lawn, Gaston county. Railroad tickets are on sale, at 50 cents' apiece, at Horton's' bil-1 Hard saloon. Cochrane's billiard saloon, and Purefoy's stationery and confectionery store! Very elaborate arrangements have been and j wm t,e ma(je for the picnic, and the Pioneers are determined to make it a v splendid suc cess in every, particular. From the'manner 1 in which they conducted their first -annual soiree, and all other public entertainments which they have undertaken, we feel assured 1 that, on this occasion,, they will not 'fall short of their own expectations and those of 1 their friends.
