Retamed. Mr. W. C. Maffitt and bride, nee Mis3 Lot tie Jenkins, returned yesterday morning on the Air Line train, after an absence of more than two weeks, which time they spent with the friends and relatives of the groom, in Atlanta, Ga. We cordially welcome them back to the eity. . To-Speak in Warren ton. We see from the Gazette, that Rev J B Bopne, of this city, is to address the people of Warren ton to-morrow night, on the sub ject of establishing a Peabody school in that town. Says the Gazette: "Mr. Boone is Superintendent of the Graded School in Charlotte, and is considered one of the best teachers in the Ftate." Printer's Picnic. We see that the Charlotte printers are making great preparation to have a picnic, on the 4th of July. : Now, gentlemen, we wish you all success and a merry time, but be sure that you don't get on a bust. Shelby Banner, Now did you ever! Sobriety is a charac teristic of the craft, and we thought every body knew it. The very idea of a printer "getting on a bust," is perfectly preposterous.- - - - Bridge Over Buffalo Creek. ' C f Ella BJ ""J - :- . . Garvin PardouedV ' - "J- '. Our readers remember the fact of the shoot ingofKistler by Garvin, in this city, more than two months ago., Garvin was . tried at the last term of court and sentenced to six months imprisonment. His wife has been devoted to him and has recently circulated a petition for signature-, asking the Governor to pardon him.. A few nights ago Mrs Gar vin went to Raleigh and held a personal in terview with Governor Brogden. Yesterday morning she returned home, bearing with her a pardon from His Excellency. Sheriff Alexander accordingly released the prisoner last night, an he immediately left the city. Without intendingfto go into the; merits of this case, we express the opinion that the sentence was very Jight, and that the Gov ernor "strained" the "quality of mercy" in interfering. J The Picnic Yesterday. m The members of Tryflin Street Methodist LSunday School, had an excursion tyesterday toTXmeBtonelSprings. S. C. They left on he Air line watoi at 7 o'clock in the morn- ing,and returned at aboat the same hour in the evening.' ? The party arrived at their stopping place about 11 o'clock A. M., and walked oyer to the springs, a distance of about three quarters of a mile. Here they spent the time allotted them, with strolling around, and amusing themselves in divers manners. Some time after dinner they were called upon to leave, and the 400 who com prised the party, retraced their, steps. We would have something more to say about the picnic, but a full report has been promised us by one who was present, and whose pen is more vigorous and facile than ours. The Cotton Reports. Complaint was entered yesterday by a buy er outside of Charlote, that the quoted mar ket prices in The Observes were really ih excess of the actual price. Our reports are made by averaging the re ports of the cotton buyers of Charlotte and are nearer correct than they have ever been be fore. The best grade was quoted Saturday morning at 143. This is strict middling, and as very few bales are of this grade, not one bale in twenty reaches this price. Buyera of cotton who rely upon the re- reports in this paper, which we think they may safely do, must be well enough posted to know how to grade and classify their pur chases, before the blame us. We still con tend that our reports are as near correct as they could well be under the galloping de cline which the market has . experienced for the last two weeks. Masonic. Editor Observer : I noticed in Saturday's issue of the Statesyille American, an article Btigmatizing me as a party concerned in an alleged fraud. It is charged in this paper, that I was the real proprietor of a troupe, known as the New York Minstrels, who were advertised to perform in the town, and who, owing to the smallness of the audi ence were unable to comply with their en gagement., . -. ... ' t - In addition to this it indulges in some scurrilous slang, stating that I am a man of bad repute, and had deserted my associates (as it calls them, when it was tound no money could be made. . , . t t- I denounce this as both slanderous and false. My connection with the troupe was not of a business character. I advanced money to the real proprietor, Mr Anderson, whom I knew, and finding that it Could on ly be obtained, when they had realized it from their performances ; I simply went along to secure the debt due me. -I have the receipt for my hotel bill, which I paid the morning I left.
