Formerly they were treated as postal cards and went fir a cent. The season ha3 been excellent in this sec tion : corn is looking solendidlv. and the formers say that a good rain the first of August, will save it. Itemizing is excessively dull just now. The result of the reporter's hard work is far from being satisfactory to himself, and must be still further from being satisfactory to his readers. The Raleigh Comt'tiutiim says that Mr Jesse Bingham, one of the artillerymen who was wounded here during the Centennial Cele bration, left Raleigh on Monday morning, for his home in Wilmington, Del. He will return early in the Fall. Mr Roderick McDonald is a Charlotte gen tleman whom we did not mention, yester day, as a guest at the White Sulphur Springs." He has been spending two or three weeks there and returned on Monday, though we were not apprised of the fact un til yesterday Nomination in Polk. From Capt J C Mills, who has just return ed from Polk county, we learn that the Con servatiyej of that county, in convention as sembled, have nominated Wm Morris, Esq , for the Constitutional Conventi jn. He is a good citizen, a man of great personal popu larity, and will carry the county. Colored Excursion. A picnic wiil be held at Rock Hill, S C, on Monday next, 19ih inst , under the auspices of the colored Good Templars and Sunday Schools of Charlotte. The parlicipants will leave Charlotte at 8 o'clock, A. M , on a sperial train. Fare for the round trip fifty cents. Bank Reports. We published yesterday morning, the re port of the condition of the Merchants' and Farmers National Bank, and this morning publish the reports of the First and Com mercial National Banks. These statements show the solid prosperity of all these insti tutions, and reflect creditably upon the di rectors and officers of the banks. No Better Thau Before. We had hoped that, when the Market House was leased to a prfvate individual, there would be some abatement of the.nui sance which had existed there, in the bois-; terousness of a gang of blasphemous, drunk en, and rowdy negroes, : who were almost continually assembled there; We are sorry to say, however, that the condition of things is no better now than before, and ladies and gentlemen passing there still have their ears assailed by the oaths and blackguardisms of these degraded wretches. Will Produce an Item Yet., i Every morning, before closing up the pa per, we walk-around, to the store of Burwell & Springs, and sit silently on the, steps for about an hour, waiting for the item which we are certain to get, some time sbbri, from that locality. One of these i mornings some belated devotee pt ; BacchuswUl waltz him, self into the deep excavatloM. being made for the n e w insurance bmiaing ; ana preax nis neck, and then we will step ngntiy arounq to the office and spread ourselfon a feeling obittiary, which we will bead "A Sad Catas trophe.". . - ; r.-,r,;:"i;Y.j .:v '-f-t , .... Infirmary ta he Located In Charlotte. : A letter received by one of . our citizens, yesterday, from Dr S Van Meter, of Charles-' ton. 111., brings the information that he will establish an infirmary In this city, some time during the month, of September, for the treatment of chronic -diseasesVof all kinds. He asks for information concerning a suitable building, the amount of rent de manded, &c; and, adds ; that if he cannot rent such a house as he Tdesires;f; he will build one immediately. It may be remem-. bered that Dii yan Meter was in - Charlotte last April, and spent some time here then. i Feathers In Fashion, In order hot to allow the Charlotte ladies to be behind, we will say to them that the fashion papers;teli;us that feathers are shooting out all oyer the toilettes. The Berbers Coming. " The Bergen are preparing for their annual tour through North Carolina. We learn by the Raleigh News, where they are to play in December, that they are now in Jackson, Michigan, re-organizing. Their new com pany will include many attractions not heretofore presented, and best of all the famous Sol Smith Russel will be with them.' Most of the old members will also come. The company will play in Newborn Decern-? ber 10th, and here probably during that month. Responsibility of Postmasters. Hon Thos A Spence, Assistant Attorney General of the Postoffice Department, has rendered a decision that postmasters will be held responsible for the loss of packages in their offices. A package, the contents of which was worth $200, went to the Boston office, and was lost. Mr Bort.the postmaster . He wrote to the Postmaster General to know what to do.received a reply in accordance with Judge Spence's decision to pay for its contents and charge himself with it in his next account. Supreme Court Decisions. The Supreme Court ou Monday randered decisions in the following case from this section of the State, as we Ree from the Raleigh Sentinel ; By Reade, J : M L Holmes et al , vs. T J Crowell et. al., from Union. Error, and judgment here for defendant. R J Holmes et al , s. T J Crowell et al., from Union : Affirmed, and ju lgm ent here for defendant. A circular from the commissioner of inter rial revenue at Washington, dated June 30, 1875, says: "In a decision (of the department) concerning the stamp tax upon bank checks drafts, orders or jrOUdtfW ! that drafts or bills drawn W" tae United ; States upon a foreign country jieed not be stamped, not being vouchers in the meaning of the law; while in this country that ruling is, from and after this date, reversed. The act of March 1875 imposes the stamp tax of two cents upon evtry bank check, draft or order or voucher, for the payment of any sum of money whatsoever, drawn upon any bank, banker or trust company." m After a Rascal. A negro named Noah Craige alias George Noah, recently forged orders for good9 to the amount of $30 or $40, on a fi-m in Salis bury, and escaped to this city. Previous to this, he had broken open a Lutheran Church in Rowan county, and stolen from it several things of value. A warrant was sent over here for his arrest, and a Salisbury negro named Green Reynolds was deputized to serve it. He found his man, yesterday. somewhere out in the country, but while. fool-like, giving evidence of his importance by showing the warrant to some uninterest ed person who was present, the game took leg bail and has not since been seen. City Taxes. , We again call public attention to the fact that the time for making returns to the City Clerk and Treasurer, of articles Bubject to taxation, expires on the 20th inst. It is of great importance that these returns be made between now and the time specified. Every person who fails so to do, is liable, as we have before stated, to a penalty of $200,' and his name is sure to appear in the delinquen t list, which will certainly be made out. A good many persons seem to be under the impression that, when they make returns to Mr Martin, they cover the whole ground. but such is not the cose ; that is only for State 'and county, while this of which we have been speaking, is for ci ty, and i3 an entirely!different matter. Separate re turns must be made, and it were well they were made at once. ' A Narrow Escape The wife of Mr John Kuck, who lives sit miles from this cityr made a narrow escape from death by lightning, during a 'thunder storm, a few evenings ago. - She was stand- in nftair the fire blace when the electric cur- rent pagsed down the cbimney, scattering g .g of fire all oyer the room and giTing her aBh0Ck of such severity that she did not i from the effects of it for 24 hoars. V ne;hbor. sitlina near by Mis 'Kuck. was not iniured. and neither" the house nor the chimney were damaged,, r ; i W.e use this incident to again warn , our I readers of the danger of sitting in front of fire places or in air currents, during the, pre valence' of thunder storms: - Almost every person killed by lightning, is killed either while sheltered under a tree or while situne or standine in a current 6f air. Too much care cannot be exercised on this point. Carollua Military Institute. " " s We call attention, to i the advertisement which announces that the Fall term of the C; M.'l.; will pperf da the' 15th e of 8eptem ber. We learn thai the prospects of the in Btitutibn are excellent for a large attendance next session.' Last term 1 125 cadets were in attendance. KH-jt&iSt. : -,i j A contract was ' made i yesterday j "by a portion of .' the Street committee of : the Board of Aldermen, whereby the city is al lowed to run a sewer from . the crossing-of Txade street and the North CaroUnaaUrta4, to , tha.cuibert pgdjerthy Candg6Et Row in Five Points. The Fiye Pointers were on their muscles, yesterday morning, and they ' made each other howl.! There is no telling how many were involved in the row, from beginning to end, but the principal fracas was between Josephine Hammond, Ella Bell and Harriet Morrow. All of these fled, but later in the day the two first named were captured by the police, on the , Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta Railroad, near the Carolina Military Institute, and after much trouble, and after the persuasive eloquence of a billy had been added to less forcible measures, they were finally lodged in the lock-up, to await .trial this morning. . On the way thither, Josephine Hammond boasted that she did not care for going to the guard house or to jail ; that she had been in both places many a time, and when she got out she was just the same. This is liter ally true, and just &o long as these miserable creatures are punished to the extent of a night's rest and a dollar fine in the morning just that long will they continue the grcss breaehes of the peace which have rendered their" names infamous from one end of the city to the other. If a chain gang is not needed here, nothing is. The Canada Thistle. That pestiferous thistle is now within a week of ripening its seeds. Unless destroy ed this week, myriads of its feathery germs will fill the atmosphere and float rxiles into the country. They were never known to be so numerous, and never before thought to be of sufficient importance for a formal declaration of hostilities. The Mayor has appealed to the citizens to array themselves against them as volunteers and no doubt that many have been slain in private enclosures ; but the vacant lots and streets in the suburbs, abound with them. We would suggest to His Honor to organize a corps of "buh-whaokers," and sen a them lortn, noe in nana, to the num ber of about two stal art slayers to each wnf'L"Il';Lr--tlin in abni linn iTujlllTf extermination of them would be j effected. Where do they come from ? Wonder if our Scotch friends could not give some in formation on that point 7 The thistle is a national emblem in the land of Wallace and Bruce, and presents itself simultaneously with the highly respectable citizens from that substantial old island, who have fav ored us by becoming citizens amongst us. The Temperance Meeting Last Night. Quite a respectable number of persons as sembled at the First Presbyterian Church, last evening, to attend the temperance meet ing which was held under the auspices of the Young Men's Christian Association. The services of the evening were opened with ninsic, and a prayer by Rev Dr Chap man. R N Littlejohn, Esq., presided, and, in a few well chosen sentences, introduced the first speaker of the evening, Geo E Wil son, Esq. Mr Wilson did not deal largely in harrowing stories, nor draw ridiculously improbable caricatures, as many temperance orators do, but argued against the use of al coholic drinks like a sensible man. He start ed out with the presumption that no one would deny that liquor i3 a curse; referred to the position of many emi nent men that drunkenness is a dis ease and expressed the opinion that there is much reason in this theory, did not believe that intemperance could ever be stop ped by legislative enactment, and thought moral suasion the beat means of restraining men from this vice. His remarks were well received. ! Mr AS Caldwell was the next speaker. He believed in the law taking hold of the curse, and cited a precedent where intem perance had been successfully combated by this means ; believed in society proscribing young men who drink, fec.,tc. The address of Rev P J Carra way closed the exercises. It was quite forcible, - and portions of it excited considerable merri ment. We hope the meeting tended to the ad vancement of the temperance cause in the community. " Miss Constance Woolson, ' lady who ' contributes1 to s several lpadinc literary 'publications, is registered . at the Central Hotel " - received from the popular pub lishing house of D Appleton & Co.,i New York, the Memoirs of Gen W T Sherman, written by himself. In it he gives his own personal history, the history of the war be tween the States, not forgetting to tell th story of his march to ; the sea. The work before us is in two volumes, bound in calf, and is a model of typographical execution. We have not read it but from the criticisms which we have seen upon it, and : from the opinion which we hold of Sherman, there remains no doubt with us that it is an able and exhaustive production ; for whatever else may be said of him it cannot be da nied that he is a man" of ability, as a soldier and otherwise. Messrs Appleton A Co., have perhaps the finest publishing house in the United States and this work is gotten np in the highest style of the minting and binding art, as is, indeed, everything which is turned out from their mammoth establishment.
