Some nights ago two, negro boys, aged about 15 years, went tq-the house of an old negro man, in the upper part of the county, during his absence, broke open & trunk or chest and stole therefrom all his money, as well as other things. Io addition to this they went into his cotton patch and broke down and mined all his cotton. The same boys on the same night weifft to the house of Mr. Fielding Nisbet, just across the Iredell line, while he was away, stole all his money, shattered a gold watch all to pieces, and committed other species of deviltry. They were pursued but not successfully. The Rule for Pitching. As Charlotte has the base bail mania so badly just now, the following enquiry made of the New York Clipper, the editor of which is a member of the professional base hall as sociation, ahd the answer will prove of in terest to many in this city r "What consti tutes a legitimate delivery of the ball to the bat from the pitcher? My understanding of the ruling is, that any ball delivered to the bat from the hand when below the line of the hip is a fair delivery whether round or underhand throw. Please decide." The answer says, "your understanding of the ruling is correct." To-morrow night is the regular night of the Board of Aldermen. Jupiter Pluvius has invited all the other gods to back seats. With a continuation of the present prudent management, the future of the company is a bright one." North Carolina Dental Association. According to announcement, the North Carolina Dental Association was formed at Beaufjrt on Wednesday last, the 11th inst. Drs W H Hoffman and Isaiah Simpson, of this city, were present, and from the first named gentleman we learn (hat the follow ing officers were elected : President Dr B F Arlington, of Raleigh First Vice-President Dr V E Turner, of Raleigh. Second Vice-President Dr Jas E Bea. of Wilmington. Secretary Dr E L Hunter, of Enfield. Treasurer Dr S S Everitt, of Wilmington. After a harmonious and interesting set sion, of two days, the Association adjourned to hold its next meeting in Greensboro, on the second Tuesday, Wednesday and Thurs day of August, 1876. The Devil 1 Our boss having depai ted, we thought it advisable, in his absence, to say a few words in regard to that personage with whom, (if we are in bad luck), ; we may chance, we fear, to go into winter quarters some day in the future. We begin by stating that the Devil is not such a tight old wad as he is made to appear; not that we are intimately acquainted with his Satanic Majesty, or desire any further acquaintance ; nor do we wish it understood that this article is intended in any way to conciliate him, for, strong in onr rectitude, we defy him! But still we think it proper, at times, to take notice of him, just as we make mention of a Radical can didate for Convention. ' (no disrespect in tended to his majesty). - From the time Adam and Eve were caught robbing the apple orchard, and were forced to remove their washing from Eden, and dry their fig leaves in milder climes, down to this degenerate age, when, his dark colored grandchildren run for the' Legislature, he makes an important figure in the history of the world. As a warrior, his name is sung in grand old epic poems, when he marshalled hia in fernal army, and moved against Heaven. He showed the consummate wiles of the seductive statesman, when he assisted Eve in the apple scrape. Woman and the Devil staited this business of working for a liv ing. Deeds of war and diplomatic manuevres are his. The only indignity we hear of his undergoing, (and that we are obliged to con fess), is being whipped around the stump. ine iievu, as he waxes in years, waxes more and more in decency of character, and this is proved by observing the different forms in which he has appeared at different times in the epoch of the world's existence. (This view causes us to broach lightly the subject of the personality of the Devil, but only slightly, however, for to bring this within the province of our essay, would in volve us in a hopeless entanglement of metaphysics.) Just as man, as his intellec tual powers strengthened, passed through successive gradations, from the order of shell-fish, (a la Darwin,) through the reptile and quad ru pal form, till he became erect, just so the Devil ; only being of a higher order of creation, he commenced with being a snake, then a roaring lion, &c., and never, like us, knew what it was to be a crab When seen m these late days, as he some times is, he appears in human shape, though his cloven foot partakes of the quadruped (N. B. Some of his grandchildren look in these days as if they had just gotten up on two legs). Note. This article is improperly placed in this department; it properly belongs in the religions column. Holden, Who isspending several days in Charlotte, visited'us in our office yesterday. The recent newspaper reports of his illness are untrue, and he is now looking well and seeming to enjoy good spirits. He talks freely and fluently upon politics and the current topics of the day, and retail. s a great part of that fire whijh in former days, marked him as the foremost journalist of North Carolina. Referring to the death of Gov. Graham, he spoke of the man in terms the kindliest, expressing the highest admiration of his character, abilities and public services. Of other political opponents, living and dead, he spoke in the same terms, seeming to have l)st much of the bitterness which character ized his course in the days of his journalis tic and gubernatorial life As a conversation alist, he is more ready aud entertaining than we bad been led to suppose ; such is rarely ever the case with a man who wields a pen with Gov. Holden's skill, His ex-Excellency shows the inroads of time and care. He looks older and more care worn than he did two years ago; he is more stooped and bis step is hardly so elastic When a Sight Drafts . Should he Pre sented. The question when a sight draft should be presented has been revived by some late transactions. The legal authorities say that such drafts should be presented within .a "reasonable time," but what that may be is somewhat indefinite, and must vary with circumstances and local usages. It is claim ed that the drafts of banks issued for pur poses of exchange have a longer life than those of private parties issued for the prompt payment of accounts. Bills of the first-class are regarded as a part of the circulating me dium current equally between distant points and more safe and convenient than bank notes payable to bearer. Commercial usage fixes the responsibility foi the payment of such bills on the diawer, on whose credit they are received, who is presumed to as sume all liability for the sol vency of the drawee for any reasonable time that they may be kept in circulation. : Reorganization of the Yellow Jacket Fire Company.
