Wednesday was the first one. ; But for the winds which fanned our brows yesterday would have beh a day of oppres sive heat" The handsome porters of the State Fair Association, adorn some of the billboards of the city. Send for a specimen copy of the Weekly 0 BSEfiv Kii-th e handsomest and one of the best filled weeklies, in the State. Ground was broke on Tryon street in front of the Central Hotel, yesterday morn ing, and the street is being prepared for macadamizing. The noblest thing out is the "Pretty" style of note paper and envelopes at Tiddy's. The "Major" will Bhow it to you and ex plain its advantages over all other. Thirty-one through passengers arrived on the North Carolina train yesterday morning and went on by the Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta Railroad. Travel is pretty good just now, on the different lines. We are glad to see that the big tree which has been standing in the middle of Tryon street, near the corner of Eleventh, has been cut down and rooted up. It was in the way and obscured the view of the street. A lively fight took place last evening about dark between two negro women on the edge of the Five Points. After a few cuffs, one of them "advanced & few paces backwards and graduated out of the prem ises." Unless he is pardoned or has his sentence commuted by Gov Brogden between now and that time, Wm Elwood, who is confin ed in jail here under sentence of death foi murder, will be hanged three weeks from to day. We would be glad if the friend who left a specimen of gold ore on our table, yester doy morning, in our absence, and a note with it, would call and explain. We can neither Tead the note mor the name append ed to it. There is a dray mule in this city which ought to belong to a base ball club. He was being driven along College street, yesterday, and just in a second made a dead halt, and pitched the driver almost over his bead. That nuile would make nn e'egant short stop. - The Skeelers. These cool nights are having i depressing effect upon the skeeters; and when a fellow starts around the room after one these nights with a plank in his hands, he has some sort of chance of stunning him by a lick on the head. Then he can be picked up and dump ed out of the windoTr. Work on the Carolina Central. The railroad track has been laid to within two miles of Buffalo, and there the iron gave out. An iron train was to have passed through this city last night, with enough rails to finish the road through to Shelby. The sills all being laid, it will be short work to put the iron down when it gets to hand. Personal. A B Wrenn, Esq., of the Kennesaw Route; was registered at the Central, yesterday. The following gentlemen of the press are in the city : Messrs J PBabington of the Shelby Itirora, D J Carter, of the Lancaster (S C) Ledger, and J Mal lard, of the Statesville Landmark. Convicts on the Streets. Street Superintendent Hunter on yesterday had three convicts at work on the streets. They had been sentenc ed by the Mayor to pay fines, and not being able to do so, were sent to the calaboose, whence they were taken and put to work on the city. A good idea. -m For Whoever It Fits. When we pick up an exchange and find about thirteen of our locals copied uncredited into their local columns and palmed oft' on the public as original with them, we change a popular quo tation from Shakespeare to suit ourself, and think : "Oh, that editors should put idiots into reporters' chairs, to steal away their neighbors' brains." Boisterous Worship. We do not wish to make ourself amena ble to the charge of an unnecessary, attack upon a religious congregation, and feel that it is not unnecessary when we refer to the boisterousness with which prayer and praise are indulged in by the congregation of the colored church in the Stumptown section of the city. Citizens down there complain that their slumbers are disturbed at night by the unnecessary noise made at this church, and while not wishing to discourage the colored people in their religious exercises, would be glad to have them conducted in a more or derly manner. Attempt to Escape an Officer. Last night about 10 o'clock,Mr JAG Orr, jail guard, served a warrant on Ed Williams, who has been absent from the city for some time, and whom he met on the street in front of one of jthe buildings on Tryon; street, below the Central Hotel. A friend of Williams, who was present at the . time, asked to see the process, and as be carried it to the light to read it, .the prisoner , made a break and ran 'at the top 'of his speed down the street, pursued by-the i rfficer, who caught him in about 150 yards, and conveyed him to jail. TH EC Train Delay. .: , . " ;. .H .-: The Carolina Central Railroad is run ning mixed freight and passenger trains and this, together with the insufl&ciency of water, on the Eastern Division, often delays the train. This was the 5ase on Wednesday night, when the engine was pulling a very heavy train. In conse quence of this, though due here at 5.45 A. M., the train did not arrive yester day until after 1 P. M. A Good Breakfast House. Under the new schedule on the North Carolina Railroad, passengers arriving here in the morning and passing through by the Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta train, get breakfast at the eating house on the plat form. This house is kept by Mr Lindsay Adams, than whom few men understand their business better or follow it more strict ly. He always feeds his guests upon the very bestihat is to h had, and those who eat with him once, are always very willing to try it again. The Maddest Man To be found in ten States, is the hand some young conductor on one of our roads, who delayed his train ten minutes, a few mornings ago, waiting for axiailroad king from whom he had received a message to wait, or thought he had. When the belated passenger arrived it was not the railroad king at all only his little son. Then the conductor went out on the platform of the rear coach as the train moved off, and tore his hair, and bowled, and rent the air with oaths. A word to him about it now, is equivalent to a fisticuff, and a fisticuff with him is equivalent to a licking, for he weighs 170 and stands six feet one in his stocking feet. New Railroad Depot. As we stated some time ago, the At lantic, Tennessee & Ohio Railroad is to have a depot built in this city. Yes terday the initiatory steps were taken, by tearing away the old platform of the company. The depot will be erected where the platform stood, and near to and on a line with the Charlotte, Co lumbia & Augusta Depot. It will be brick, 75x29 feet, height of walls 17 feet. The agent's office will be on one side of the front entrance, and that of the Superintendent on the other. F W Ah rens has the contract to do the work and deliver the keys by the 15th of October. This railroad has never had a depot of its own in this city. Previous to the conflagration of last April, it used the depot of the Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta Railroad, and since that time a box car has been used instead. Another Water Works Project Three gentleman representing the Holly system of water works, are in the city at present, with a view to estab lishing water works here, if an arrange ment can be made with the city gov ernment. These gentlemen have just finished the water works in Atlanta, about which so much has been said in the papers recently. They had a con ference, on yesterday, with Mayor John ston and several members of the Board of Aldermen, who are favorable to such an enterprise if the terms are such as can be borne. They have examined several streams contiguous to the city, and will make an estimate of the pro bable cost of the works. We trust that all this will result in something definite being done toward putting up these much needed water works in Charlotte. The Courts. Mayor's Court. Again, yesterday, there were no cases on the docket of this Court. Before Justice Davidson. Four cases of depraved white women for living with negro men. One of these alleged a regular marriage, and the man, a burly negro, as black as the hinges of Hades, appeared to corroborate her evidence and referred to the Register's records. It is hard to believe that such absolute degradation exists in our midst, and yet it is true, and the shame lessness of the women is equal to their degradation. They were all dismissed until the action of the Superior Court is had upon their cases. Before Justice McNinch--Sever& cases, none worth mention. A charge preferred against a negro for his wife, was not sustain ed . The Picnic Yesterday,. The picnic of the members of the Sunday School of the Second Method ist Church, took place on the Fair Grounds yesterday, and was attended by a large crowd. We are glad to know that it was a pleasant occasion for all who participated. The morning passed off with games of all descriptions, and with all the festivities customary on such occasions. About noon the din ner was spread in Floral Hall, and a free invitation was extended to all on the grounds to come in and "help them selves." The invitation was very promptly accepted, and notwithstand ing the large crowd and the keen appe tites, there was enough and to spare. It was excellent and bountiful, and much remained after the crowd had fin ished. After dinner a game of base ball was the excitement. . The contest was be tween the Painter's Nine and the Bun ker Hill Nine. The score stood : Pain ter Nine, ,58; Bunker Hill, 54. The last named Club is composed of young boys, none of the members being - yet 21 yearsof ago T'tlt vl V 'A The crowd disewedabout 5 o'clock in fee afternoon after a day of unalloy ed pleasure, which will long be remem bered by all who participated. Throwing Rocks at a Traia. We understand that on Wednesday, while the Western North Carolina train was oh its down trip, a rock was thrown at it, when about seven miles below, Statesville. Capt Whitley, the conductor and anotherjgentleman, were sitting at a window, the blind of which was down, though the sash was raised. The rock struck this window, and the thrower, a negro was seen by the gentleman who sat with the conductor. The beH Tivas pulled and the train stopped, and Capt Whitley went back and saw the negro still standing on the bank. As he ap proached, the rascal ran, and as he did so, Capt W fired at him with his pistol. He continued to run and a second shot was fired, this one with better effect, for as the pistol cracked the negro dodg ed and was seen to throw his hand up to the side of his face. He escaped through the woods, however, and noth ing more was seen of him. Behind on Water. That's a curious pump in front of the Court House. After it stands awhile without being worked, it won't yield a par ticle of water until some is poured into it from the top. The other night a party of bloods, who had patronized the bar rooms till they closed up, felt their coppers getting hot and went to this pump to get some wa ter. They see-sawed on the handle for ever so long, when finally one of them remem bered the pump's peculiarity. Then he sug gested that they hunt up some water to pour into it, and with the dipper in hand they went down to the Market House pump, got it filled, carried it back, poured it into the top of the Court House pump, and pumped a drink of water apiece ! It never occurred to any of the crowd, until next morning, that they might have taken a drink while at the Market House pump, and that going from there back to the Court House was just that much trouble extra. Verily, there is no assurance that a fellow, after looking "upon the wine when it is red, when it givetb its color in the cup," will "move" himself "aright." The Charlotte Clubs at Sharon. The Centennial Nine and the K 9 of this city, went down to Sharon yester day, to contend with the Sharon clubs in match games of base ball. The clubs were courteously received and the game between the K 9 and the White Belts took place as early in the day as convenient. It resulted in a victory for the K 9 by a score of 51 to 44. The day was made a picnic occasion, and a large number of the people of Sharon, including many ladies, had as sembled to witness the game. A little after noon-day, an abundant and ex cellent dinner was spread, and of this each person present was invited to par take. After the dinner, which is much complimented by the Charlotte boys, the Centennials and the Red Belts, had their game. The former were victori ous, the score standing 43 to 27. The young men from town returned home after nightfall, highly pleased with their trip. They report that the dinner was splendid, and that every thing passed off in the most pleasant manner. The people of Sharon were courtesy without an exception, and nothing occurred to mar the festivities of the day. The Meeting; of the Air-Line Stock holders. The meeting of the stockholders of the Air-Line Railroad, seems to have been quits inharmonious. The meeting failed to secure a chairman Tuesday morning, and adjourned over to 5 o'clock that afternoon. The Atlanta Herald says that the two important questions before the organization, were: 1st. Can Colonel Buford, while acting Receiver of a portion of the road in one State, act as President ? 2nd. Are par ties holding "preferred stock," bearing interest, stockholders ; or are they pre ferred creditors ? No business was transacted at the af ternoon session, and the convention met again Wednesday morning. A special to the Greenville News says of Wednesday's proceedings : "The meet ing was very exciting for awhile to day. The committee on" proxies was mistaken in supposing there were only three and a half instead of four and a half millions of stock, and on their pro miscuous rejection of proxies, they had less than a majority of stock represent ed, and hence no quorum, and the meeting adjourned until the first Wed nesday in November." The real object of the meeting was a re-organization the election of a Pres ident and Board of Director. NEW ADFERTISEHIEN Cakes ! Cakes ! F INEST assortment of Cakes in the city.
