There is every evidence now that the Fall trade is opening out. It is expected that the match game of base ball to be played this afternoon between the K 9 and the first nine of the Sharon Club will be pretty close- Both clubs are in good practice and play well. The fellow who bows, smiles and Hits his hat just as the lauy on the opposite side of the street turns her head the other way, is the fellow who, just at that time, can beat the world feeling mean. Ask him the news and he'll hit you. a spectacled gentleman from abroad sat down on a grape hull as he was walking rapidly down one of the streets, yesterday about noon. He is one of the most accom plished off-hand cussers we ever had the pleasure of listening at. Having traversed every ward, and having enquired of every person on the streets and at each house, we aie prepared to announce that there has not been eyen a dog fight since ourlast issne. unless it took place last night between 10 o'clock and the time we go to press. The Galveston JVrr one of our regular ex changes, visits us with elaborate accounts of tne late disastrous storms on the coast of Texas. Many of onr readers have relatives in that country, and we will loan the pa pers to those interested in seeine accounts of the great calamity. The Southern Truss. This is the title of a new paper at Cohim- Dus.ua., deyoted to the interests of the Catholic Church. It is in quarto form, has a beautiful head, is well printed, and well tilled with choice matter that is of interest to others as well as the members of the great church which t he paper specially rcpnsents. Hebrew Festival. On the evening of the 28th of this month will begin the Hebrew festival of Itosh lias hana, or New Years day. The festival will end on the evening of the 29th, with Re formed Jews. With the Orthodox Jews, however, two days are obseryed. Ten days thereafter will come the Day of Atonement. That Temperance Society Is about to go by the board. There is on ly one of the charter members left, and he is sending up the' Macedonian cry, "Come over and help us." He is very lonesome, and as he feels the end of his nose these nights and finds it cold, he remarks to him self, that it is a mighty long time between drinks. A South Carolina Thief. A citizen of Greenville, S. C, was over here, yesterday, and nabbed a negro boy who had stolen a pistol and other things from him. The pistol had been sold but was recovered : the bov was arrested and escorted, last night, over the State line, on the Air-Line train. Pavement" Work. The brick pavement is being extend ed the whole length of the Central Hotel on Trade street, and, when fin ished will extend from the corner of Tryon to the alley between the new ad dition to the hotel and the store of M.r- Murray cfc Davis. Hitherto that has been a fearfully bad piece of pave ment. Lowering- the Pavement. The street hands are engaged in low ering the pavement of Trade street in front of the United States Brand i Mint property. The pavement here is very much higher than on either side of this property and it is deemed best for sev eral reasons to lower it. Two feet of it will be taken off, and the top covered with sankl ud gravel) The Inevitable Watermelon. ' Famine is in thy cheeks, . Need and oppression stareth io. thine eye?, JPfJS, 2Si misery. Two of the negro convicts who have been working out sentences on the streets, escaped on Tuesday night, and the city was deprived, yesterday, of their valuable services. They were Henry: Goode and JIc Mclntyne. The con victs are not confined at night, but are only paroled, and these thinking that their parols should extend longer than one night, have acted as if they did. - The Weather. The air, yesterday, was damp and chill, and really cutting at times. For awhile there was a genuine snow-like feeling in the atmosphere. It reminded us of the good old times during the war, when our mother told us going barefooted would make us tough and strong and soldier like, and how we used to remark softly each evening, as we dug our toes in the ashes "that there would be snow before morning certain." A Fire Tried Bottle. Mr S Landecker, of this city, has just come into possession of an ale lottle which passed through the groat Chica go fire, and of which he is very proud. It was in the business house of his brother, which was destroyed by the fire. The bottle is twisted and gives evidence of having undergone the "fer vent heat." A part of a glass bottle is melted into one side of it. An Eclipse of the Sun. The astronomers tells us that the eclipse of the sun, which will take place on the29th of this month, will be visible in the TJnited States east of the Mississippi Riyer as 8par- tial eclipse, the sun rising eclipsed. The eclipse will be annular or ring-like from Sodus Toint, on the south shore of Lake Ontaric, Lyons, Oswego, Syracuse, Utica, Saratoga and Northern Massachusetts to the Atlan-ic Ocean. Along the central line the size ot tne eclipse will be eleven and third digits. one- The New Postal Cards. The ladies' fashions do not change of'.en er than the style of the postal cards, and the end is not yet. An exchange tells us that the postal card factory at Springfield is now making cards of the new rat tern at the rate of about G00.000 a day, but, as there are still 2,270.000 in the vault, the public will not do any corresponding on the new cards until next month . The new card has a finer sur face than the old, and can be used for copy ing with a press. It is heavier than the old card, but is calendared sj thoroughly that it is somewhat thinner. - - Heavy Freights. We learn that an immense amount of freight is now, and has been for some time past, passing thioughthis city for the inte rior, the Carolina Central Railway being taxed to its utmost capacity to meet the de mands upon it. This consists in a large meas ure of goods for the fall and winter trade for merchants along the line of the road to Charlotte, and ho small amount going to cities south of that place. There is also, we understand, a large amount of freight com ing lhis way, consisting of cotton and other products from the interior. Tf'wi Ington Star. Personal. Capt. W. W. Marriage of a Jewish Couple. Yesterday afternoon, at the residence of the bride, corner Tryon and Fifth streets, Mr Joel Lindy and Miss Ellen Urucker, daughter of the late Levi Drucker, were joined together in the bands of matrimony. The ceremony was performed by Rabbi Henry Ger- soni, of Atlanta,' Ga., and was partly in the Hebrew and partly in the English language. The nrefatnrv i-pmnrl-o and the prayer were in Hebrew, while the marriage ceremony proper was in English. The oc casion was one of great rejoicing among the people, many of whom had gather ed at the depot, not only from town, ut trom the country 'round about. The people generally manifested their satisfaction upon the completion of the road, by giving three cheers for Col S L Fremont, the able and industrious Superintendent of the road. Among those present were many ladies from the town, and a number of the people ot Rutherford county. The people of bhelby are so enthusiastic upon the oc casion, that they speak of having a rail road celebration and inviting the peo ple ot Wilmington and Charlotte to participate with them in a glorification. The Carolina Central now has a con- t:nmns tr.arAr f o4n i -x tinuous track of 240 miles, making it mo luugcBL ranroau in ine state. 17 miles longer than the North Carolina Railroad, which is 223 miles from Char lotte to Goldsboro. Col Fremont, who was in the city last night, is much rejoiced at the late con summationthe finishing of the road from Buffalo to Shelby. He sees in it the prospect of a largely increased busi ness, and a prosperous future for the line. ' For Newspapers Only. The Columbia Register, a paper into the local columns of which many of our items stray uncredited, was hit by the shell which we threw the other day at journals which are systematically guilty of appropriating the articles of their neighbor?; but essays to get out of it by saying that the Obsebyeb has done the same thing. It refers, perhap", to an item which we wrote, based upon a few lines seen in it, concerning a matter of news which was of local interest herethe appointment of the new Treasurer of the C, C. 6c A. Railroad. We publish dozens of items of news daily, without credit; this is nothing uncommon and is not that we are talking about at all, as the Register well knows. We alluded to the dozens of little items which haye as much application in one placets ! "Other, not news, strictly ww VWu lOvlVUO.
