When the debilitating fall season com mences, and nature is sapped of its wonted strength to supply the non-resusciating body ; when the damp miasmatic vapors are rising from the swamps, and the spirit is pltin gd in the Slough f Despond ; when ague agitates your sinking frame by day and feverish diseases scarify vbu" by night ; when your . failing strength and non-jubilant feelings remind ynu of youi enervated state, and that the seeds of decay are plant ted in your vitals, good corn or rye liquor is !Sr preferable to any of the bitters adver tised on the trees and fences. Reply to the Indignation Meeting:. We publish this morning a poem in reply to the proceedings of a recent indignation meeting, mention of which hs beeen made. It is not an epic poem ; it is rather pastoral, in that it intimates that tbe indignant yonng men are a lot of niutton-btad. The reply has not been laid before the lull meet ing, but the Secretary accepts the responsi bility of saying that it quite gets away with the association ; but we stick to the original proposition two pounds is two much. The Secretary begs leave to say further, that the suggestion in tbe last verse regarding the cleansing of No. 52, is being acted upon, and meanwhile taid Secretary is B'ecjing on the door-mat. Col WmXihnstan ta the Satiny ftauth , We mentioned, some days ago, that the Sunny South of Atlanta, Ga.. had published an illustration of Col Wm Johnston, of this city, together with a sketch of his life. Since that time a friend has handed us a copy of the paper. The repre-entati n is tolerably good, and the sketch carefully written. It recounts his public services, as a lawyer a pi litician and a railroad mana ger, and does him no more than simple jus tice. It is entirely true, and it is the.credit of the writeto say that it is not f uesome. HA great financial ability U dwelt upon in befitting terms, and fptaking of his railroad operations, the sketch very truthfully says that "few men in any country baye accom plished more than he has, with the limited m eans and ttridef tb e ad Terse ci rcu nistan ces. ' -O O go OIHIS OP MT AS HE REGARDS HIMSELF, HAS MALICIOUSLY MISREPRESENTED ME A I INFORM ED fiW- YORE MERCHANTS, Opera House Last Evening. The Lady of Lyons was played at the Opera House last night by the Rose and Harry Watkins. Troupe. This celebrate! drama was well acted and highly apprecia ted by every one prt sent. The role of Claude Melnotte by HaTry Watkins wa strikinnly impressive, and the acti g of Rose Watkins in the character of Pauline Deschappelles, at times, was truly touching and pathetic. Col. DamaJ, by W. Donaldion, was splendidly as well as humorously sus ained. We can candidly say that Rose fc Harry Watkins are far better .supported, than on any prior occa sion of their appearance in this city. It will not be an exaggeration' to add, that on last night was aisplayed one ot the pro foundest as well as one of the bcit aetcd dramas that we have witnessed in Charlotte. To-night. will be exhibited the operatic Carolina Military Institute. A day or so ago we took occasion to refer in flattering terms to tbe Jharlotte Institute foi Young Ladies, because we believed the management of that institution was worthy of all we said about it. We are gratified to be able to state, that the Carolina Militaiy Institute ' at the other end of tbe avenue," is also in full and vigorous operation and un der tbe efficient management of Col J P Thomas promises results equally as import ant and gratifying. It has afull corps orcf ncers and Professors, and the cadets, while continuing to show the discipline under which they learn to govern themselves seem to be steadily and busily at work, in preparing themselves for the great duties of life. Tbe curriculum is all that could be desired and the institution is an honor to Charlotte. 'well known, and quite1 an attractive pro gramme had been put out. In addition to this, a match game of base ball had been announcedi and it was suppo ed that many who really cared but , little faav the, races. would go'for the purpose of seeing this ; and IlsnuXlPOKsn ut iuis uuuwrj wo me re minded that the game of . ; i BASE BALL is the first thing to be noticed in this report, Hi tegan about 11 o'clock, between, the Monroe Club and the Namelest, Nine of this city. The day was entirely too cold for such sport as this, and both sides showed a natural dread of the ball. The game was very indifferently played, and after a long contest which possessed no interest to either players or outsiders, ' resulted in the victory of t he Monroe Club. The Kameless Nine is composed of very young boys, few of them, we suppose, being over 15 years of age. while all of iheir competitors are grown men. The boys saw Irom the start that they were no matches for their muscular opponents, and, losing spirit, the game went by default.' The members of the victorious clab, are splen Sid batters, and this gave them the advanta e : as fielders ihev are inferior to the boys. The Umpire was P F Eagle ; Scorers, IFill'8 Wilkinson and Alex Sinclair. As the victors, the Monroe Club took possession of the handsome silver cup which had been given to the Association by Mr J T Butler.and which was offered on tbe game. Even before the game was' finished the call was sounded for the races, but these did not begin until an hour after the time advertised. THE FIRST SACK was for tbe trial purse of $150, $50 to second horse, a dash of i of a mile, for all ages. with 100 pounds on each. Entries ; R H Barnes' b, g. To -the cMzens present, this was by far the most exciting race of the day, on account of ' the part which Abd-el Koiee took in it. Van derbilt was tbe. favorite in the pool selling' but the sympathies of the crowd were evi- dentl v. with Abd el Koree. ard i this was eyi need by tbe cheers which went np, when, immediately after tbe start, h pulled out from the others and ' took the lead. He held this right manfully' through the first mile,' though Vanderbilt bad by this time diminished the distance b tween them and j was pressing him closely.' Still it was hop- ; ed that he would hold kis own, but on tbej next quarter it became evident that be was letting up. Before this quarter was i finish- ed," Vr derbilt had qnite closed the gap. Getting upoo eVen terms, he improved the A Male Kills Itself Against a Tree. Yesterday evening just before dark, a horse and a mule attached to a wagon, were bitched near Creswell's store, while the col ored driver was itside buying some goods. When he canae out and took hold of the lines, the horse began kicking, and, suc ceeding in freeing himself from the control of his driver, dashed off down Church street, dragging the mule and wagon ith him. At the corner of Fourth street he n a-'e a turn in the direction of the pavement. A tree stands on the corner, and the mule seeing that tbe course indicated led him against it, pulled back with all his might, but to no purpose, for the horse being the stronger and haying the advantage of start, dashed him np against it, the poor mule's head striking the tree with terrific force. Tbe animal's neck was broken and its skull crushed, and almost by tbe time it stopped, was as dead as a herring, while the bark was peeled from the tree by the force with which the mule's head struck it- The horse, which bad done all the damage was comparatively unhurt. The horse, mule and wagon were the property of R R Rea who lives in the country, and who, we un derstand, had but recintly paid $150 for the mule. . .... . - - - Personal.
