This is a time when no fellow wants to go outdoors, and all who are not called out by pressing business, stay religiously inside. Business men are not only having a dull but a listless time, Theyjsit around the stove fires, waiting for customers who do not come and who-ar not exptcred and doze and nod of ee the I newspapers. &iSe try checks, backcammon or anything else that is calculated to affnrd diversion, but noth ing answers the purpose, and, going to the door and looking at the leadeo skies, they despair again, and drop back in their chairs to burn their faces and fidget and wait for change of weather. -. . - Settlement of a Claim Against a Couuty, We had the pleasure ofmeeting Sheriff J G Neal, of Mcboweircounty, at the Central Hotel last night. It will be seen by reference to the proceed ings of the meeting of County Commission ers on yesterday, that an order was passed for the drawing up of a petition to the Con gress of the United States, requesting that body to turn over the building of the United States Branch Mint in this city, to the coun ty to be , used as a Court House, and also as a United States Court room. We trust that the petition, will be favorably considered, and Chat the building may be given for the purposes aaked- - . '- The Holiday Festivities. We are instructed to say that the festivi ties incident tn the holiday season, will be gin next week, with a bazaar to be held, by the ladies of the Baptist Church and their friends, in the btore room under the Opera House, commencing on Thuisday, the 16th and continuing several days. The funds raised will be devoted to a church purpose. These efforts of the ladies arecommendable. and should be warmly seconded by the com. munity. We hope the patronage will be of a character worthy ef the generous holiday season. Supply and Demand. There are some things which it would be well for eur business men to consider about this time, and one of these is the well known axiom of trade that price ri se with increase of demand, other things being equal. But it is not essential that those other things remain in stain quo for all time. The profits of the seller in the aggregate would be greatly enhanced, while great benefit would ensue to th e consumer, were the former, instead of running up the figures whenever there is an inflow of new demand for a given article or class of articles, to augment the supply and cheapen the rates of charge or price proportionately. In this way steady permanent gains may be made, upon the steadily rising scale. Otherwise there is often imminent danger of killing the goose that lays .the golden egg. Custo mers can't pay as a regular habit exorbitant -prices for necessaries ; and sellers by taking advantage ot scarcity or temporary rush of demand to shutdown too heavily, soon shut the fine thing down and out ' altogether. Large tales at small profits in the standard to be aimed at. Increase the supply at cheap cost to the consumer, and thus will the demand be stimulated, and mutual ben efit all around accrue. Don't exercise all your aeuteness to make it all at a single or even a few hanls. Let patience have her share and place In the business, and she rill unravel many a mystery, avoiding ruinous nuctauons, and leading in the long run to brilliant results.
