Mr. John V. Wavet, writing from
Northwest Depot, C C Railway, Bruns
wick county, under date of Sunday
last, at 2 p m, informs the Wilming
ton Star that he had just arrived at
home, after a brief , absence, to find
that fire had swept through his whole
land, while others have suffered in
like manner. The conflagration, which
Mr. W. learns was caused by incendi
arism, has extended its ravages over
thousands of acres of larfd, and was
still raging at the time mentioned. The
losses cannot at present be estimated.
Well, well, well; just listen at this
which is what Avery says about a cock
fighting President : Mr. Samuel Deal
of Marion, we are told, has the gaff
with which Andrew Jackson, "heeled"
his first chicken at a cock fight at
Burke Court House in 1785. A glance
at Parton's Life of Jackson will show
that Jackson was in Burke county in
that year. We understand that Mr.
Deal will have this gaff on exhibition
at the Philadelphia Centennial along
with his famous game rooster, "Mar
tha Ann Lewis,"
The Star says that a young colored
woman,"wife of Anthony Howe, Jr., of
Wilmington, 'who was in delicate
health, started to. take a short walk
with her husband, on Friday night
last, when a large black hog suddenly
burst out of a gate and ran across the
sidewalk jn front of them, which so
shocked and frightened the woman,
whose nerves were just in that state to
be easily overcome by an occurrence
the least startling in its character, that
she" was seized with a succession of
spasms, which continued until Sun
day night, when she died, a victim of
eheer fright.
The Centennial celebration of the
Battle of Moore's Creek, was a highly
successful affair. A larga crowd was
present, and the day passed off most
pleasantly.- Business was almost en
tirely suspended in Wilmington and a
great many of the patriotic people of
that city attended the celebration.
The ceremonies were opened with
prayer by Rev. Colin Shaw, after
which Dr. S S Satchwell delivered the
address of welcome. This was follow
ed by addresses from Capt. S A Ashe,
of Kaleigh, Mr. Edwin W Kerr, of
Sampson, Mr. J W Stallings, of Dup

Q S H APPLEGET, wishes to inform
the public at large, that he is prepared to
furnish Plans of all kinds of buildings,
with working drawings in full, which will
be found much plainer than those of any
other man in the State, he being a practical
builder, having an experience of 15 years in
three of the largest cities of the United
States- He can answer any question or give
any information in regard to the construc
tion of any part of the building,' as he is
fully qualified to go and do the work him
self. With 15 vears as a builder and 14 as
an Architect, he knows just what is neces
sary tor a mechanic to get along with, and
with this experience yon will at once see
that he has a pretty good knowledge of the
business. You can judge for yourself as to
whether a man is an Architect without be
ing a practical builder. Some in this State
claim to be Architects when they have no
knowledge of he business and can only be
called draftsmen, and need some one to in
struct them at all times should they under
take a job. For the last six years he has
been employed in this State, and has done
all the best buildings, with only a few ex
ceptions in Raleigh, Goldsboro and Greens
boro, and almost all over the State, where
persons can see his work.
In Charlotte he would call attention to S
P Smith's Iron Front Building, and Sims &
Dowd's Store, and a number of the private
residences here.
He refers to all who have employed him
as Architect and Superintendent, as to his
ability, He can furnish, if any desire them,
the name of parties and buildings, but can
not do so here for the want of room.
He can show as many fine buildings as
any other man of his age, and will take
pleasure in doing so. Any person visiting
Charlotte is invited to call and examine his
drawings, which he has at least 500. He
guarantees to have 50 to 1 of any other per
son in the State. All are inyited to exam
ine them whether they are going to build or
not. The ladies are specially invited.
