The Youns Men's Christian Association will hold a meeting at the Methodist Church this afternoon at 41 o'clock. CITY BULLETIN Hetol de Farrow, is the way they call now. it The map man ha3 taken the place of our constitutional organ grinder. Sanders St Blackwood shippefl four hun dred bales of cotton yesterday. F W Ahrens, Eq , is digging! the base ruent of a store house on Cbh Street. "Angels in Dimity" were on the streets in large numbers yesterday, and the balmy Spring weather was rerfectly delightful. The steam cotton press is busily engaged now, as it compresses nearly all the cotton that is shipped from Charlotte. The members of the Yonng Men's Chris tian Association are reguested to meet this evening at the Methodist Church at 4.45 P. M., for the purpose of holding a public prayer meeting. The goad work goes on. Our city fathers persist in macadamizing Tryon Street, and yesterday loose boulders were scattered over the surface of the middle of the street as far as the Methodist Ch arch. Times are considered dull, but our mer chants seem to be determined to get what ever trade is possible, and to that end are getting in their spring stocks. A glance at our advertising columns will tell you where to buy. Base Bail. The Academy Nine challenged the Lono Star Nine, to play a match game of base ball, on the grounds of the Smith yille Nine, at 9 o'clcck yesterday morning. The chal lenge was accepted. The score, at the end of the game, stood 10 for the Lone Star, and 9 for the Academy Nine. More New Stores. The old building which has been moved up on Trade street from the Five Points, is ttf have a brick front, and to be converted into two first-class stores. Mr Oates, the owner Will alsouoonstract twe ;brick stores, on the lot npw oecuplea by , Ferry More head, just South of the old market. . r Baiting a Lot. - . - J. W. Wadsworth,- who purchased one of the lots belonging to the old jail property, is raising the surface of the ground about two feet, which will add very much to its value. If loose earth is an object he can be supplied with a few more loads by applying at this office. "Courting" Favor. "Man is what a woman makes him" is the standing motto of a little paper published at Wilson called the 'Topic." We don't know what influence has been brought to bear upon the editors of this little runt, but they have cer tainly made, their precocious pet look exceedingly tmall. It is however not destined long for this earth, for the Gods love it and it will die early. A Prisoner's Handiwork. e --'. Mr. D. W. Oates Of this1 city, has a yest of whieh he is truly and Justly proud. It was cut and made by himself while confined in a Northern prison, during the: war. ' Mr. Oates was as ignorant as a heathen of the art of cutting and fitting clothes, yet this gar' ment looks as thoagu it might have come from the' iMUidsoanyc(fmplished.' tailor, and taking the : scarcity , of thimbles, Apj within the prison walls, into consideration. it is certainly a marvel-of its kind. It il lastrates the truth" of the expression that necessity is thrtmtotheff invention, and the thousand strange associations and tnaay thrilling memories, connected i with- its hi lory renders. the tst treasn'fe that- money could not buy froht the proud owner. Tragic Suicide. We are indebted to a frieni for the partic ulars in regard to the death of Mr. Charles Harmon, which occurred at King's Moun tain, on the Air-Line Railroad, on day be fore yesterday. Mr. Harmon was a carpenter, and was en gaged in repairing a hou3e. By some means the scaffolding gave way, and he was pre cipitated to the ground, a distance of eight or ten feet. Either daring the fall, or as his body struck the ground, a two-inch chisel, with which ha had previously been at work, came in contact with his throat, and sever ed the jugular vein and wind-pips. He lived only about two minutes after striking the ground, and did not speak. Mr. Har mon was forty-five years old, an industrious mechanic, generally respected, and leaves a wife and five children to mouine his sad and tragic end. A Knotty Case. Some time ago one Eiani Cooper, colored, was eD gaged in the laudable business of hauling wood, and selling the same on the streets of Charlotte, for an equivalent in greenbacks- He encountered Ike Foy, also colored, who purchased" one two horse load of wood for one dollar and fifty cents ef un cle Sam's money. 4 Cooper demanded the cash, which Ike agreed to pay as soon as the wood had b'een driven around to his house and anloaded. ' Bat Ike. for some reason or other was not able to raise the money some words followed which finally ended in bringing Ike np before Justice McNinch, un der a State's warrant, for false pretense. Ike was willing to assuage the ire of the law, by paying costs, and for the load of wood. Under the present law of North Carolina, property obtained under false pretences is regarded as have been illegally obtained, and holds the offender guilty of a misdemeanor, and even though he can plead the home stead, he must pay all damages and costs, or go tojailrnd answer for his crime before the Superior Court. The Sabbath Say; It is God's, Not Oars. The great revivalist, the Rev. Dr. Nail who preached in. this section a few years ago, used this very forcible and appropriate comparison about the violation of the Sabbath day. A kind hearted man on meeting a beggar in the extremes of poverty and want took pity upon him. He said to the seeker of alms. I have only seven" dollars, but I will give you six. The beggar was not satisfied, but turned upon and robbed him even fif the seventh and last dollar, he had, "Is there" exclaimed the speaker, "any detestation too strong, or any punish ment too severe for the ungrateful rob ber I" God has given us sixdays out of the week, surel we qught, not to roD mm oi me seventu. j-iet us men respect and hallow it by attending chui ch, and forgetting the occupations and pursuits that employ us during the week, and let our thoughts soar above earth at least, one seventh of our time. The Mule That Winked His Eye. As we were walking down Trade street on yesterday, we aw a mule. We have often seen a mule before, but this one had a cun ning wink of the eye we shall never forget. An old darkey was riding him and a negro girl of about 15 occupied a portion of the mule's back, immediately behind her par ent. The girl was leisurely devouring a laree eineer cake. She was evidently well pleased with all she saw and heard, and upon her placid brow rested a serene con tentment that no pen can describe. What ever this damsel was thinking about, it was not the mule, or his slow pace, but the old man was, and he wanted to reach bis home in the country before dark- He had spurs upon his heels and with them, he gave his balaam a gentle reminder that the day was drawing to a close. Simultaneously with the spurs the same idea seemed to strike our leng eared friend. He winked his eye and off he darted at a speed that might have reflect ed credit upon a race horse. The ftirl did not wish to leave the town sd hurriedly, but the mule bad no time to tarry and part ed company with her. The girl was still sitting, but in the middle of the street ; that expression of serenity bad vanished, though the color was still in her face ; the muscles of her jaws had ceased to move, and so intently was she engaged in observ ing the increasing speed of the mule that the ginger bread had fallen from her hand. Uharees Against the Secretary or state and the Tardiaessof thtfRaleighiPapers. If charges of such a grave nature as those contained in the Petersburg In dex,can be easily proven Against Dr Howerton, the Secretary ot btate,, we think it argues badly for the energy of the Raleigh papers in not making the public acquainted with such , shame less accusations at an earlier peiiod. It is certainly a serious reflection upon our central journals that they should go all the way to Virginia to learn of criminal misdemeaners against one of the highest officials in their own State. If there was "evidence that Dr. Hower ton had oyercharged and swindled the State, they should have, been . the first to announce it; but if the accusations contained in the Index are groundless, it is due to. the good name of the State to brand them as they deserve. We do not wish to prejudge the public against any man, and it ia.due to the accuseCVarty to state'(as i we are in form ed) that, he is absent now in the city' of New York. We suspend judg ment, either until an explanation, or meeets his accusers , face to face. This article would nave appeared in the edi toriaUcolumns, but ,w were not in formed until the inside bad gone to pressihat Dr. Hbwerton was absent from tbe-State.-There?re alwayrtwi I guilt of the accused lias not as yet been proven, weTlea re the ftiribW investigS1 uons to legal iriDunais, ana me con stitu ted courts of the land. Personal. We were pleased to receive a call yes terday from our friend Capt W F Avery, of the Morganton Blade. Capt.. Avery has just returned from Wilmington, where he went in the interest of his paper. He spent yesterday in Char lotte for the sa me purpose,' and our merchants would do well to. advertise in it, for the-BZocie already has a large circulation in the Western counties along the Bine Ridge; and its popular ity is steadily on the increase, SPECIAL.
