Sunday was warm and pleasant enoughi and large crowds attended tho morning ser vices, at the different churches. , The storm in, the evening, however,' put a stop to the services at that time. The two editors of ikis paper have been elected honorary members of the Calleopean Society of the Carolina Military Institute, arid beg to express their appreciation of the compliment implied. Advertising hi Hard Times. Horace Greeley, who knew the value of advertising to business men probably as well as any man that ever lived, always insisted that in hard times when busintss. was dull and money scarce, was of all others the time when merchants should advertise the more liberally so as to stir up the people's minds to buy from them. .. The late decision of the Supreme Court in the case of J H Wilson et, al., vs. the City of Charlotte, sets a much mooted question at rest. All the facts in the case were dicided in favor of the defendant. The decision will add largely to the revenues of. the city,' and masty persons who have declined to pay their taxes until a decision should have been reached in this case, are notified that they are now expected to tay their arrearages, for receiving which the City Marshal will attend at his offi e every day this week. A Skeleton In a Shaft Progress of the VV. N. C. R K. A correspondent at Old Fort writes us that a few days ago, while the hand3 employed on the Western North Carolina Railroad work, were engaged in cleaning out the bot tom of the shaft in wannanoa Tunnel, which is 126 feet deep, and which has here tofore had 100 feet of water in it, a human skeleton was discovered, with a hole through its skull. It is supposed that these are the remains of some person who has been mur dered and the body thrown in this shaft, within the last fiye years. The discoyery Qf course excites a good deal of sensation in the neighborhood. The passenger trains on the Western road, were to have run to Henry's (late Malone's store) on yesterday, and regularly after this time. A Grateful Corpse. "Cut off in the blossoms of my sin, Uuhousel'd, disappointed, unanel'd; No reckoning made, but sent to my account With all my imperfections on my head." This is what CaptC P Hyde thought the other day, when he read his obituary in the Observer. He has just passed through here on hi3 way from the South, and told the re porter that be knew the statement of his. demise was a falsehood as soon as he saw it. He expressed himself as thankful, however, for the compliments paid him in the notice of his death, and remarked that we could just save the type as it could be used again when he does sure enough peg out. It was stated to him that the item was gleaned from the Richmond Dispatch, to which paper it was credited, and he , borrowed a shot-gun and boarded the Richmond & Danyille train. Fashivn Notes. Calico dresses are coming in vogue for street wear. Bows, sashes, and loops are placed on ap propriate parts of the dress ad libitum. Percale, cambric, calico, and lawn will take the place of linen and batiste for suits next summer. Black silk eaeques will be. worn for street wraps, cut very loag and of similar shape to those now in vogue. - The rmw calicoes and cambrics for spring wear have plain grounds showing stripes, checks, plaids and dahes of color. One deep, long pocket, either plai tec gath ered, appears on the left side of nearly every imported costume this spring. Fer millinery purposes there are basket woven, granite-woven, and serge silks in cream and other fashionable colors. Grog grain ribbons will be used in trim ming spring bonnets, but serge and basket woven ones are also shown for that purpose, Box plaited ruffles and . flounces are pre ferred by modistes for stylish suits in course of preparation for Easter Sunday and alter Lent. Coat shaped sleeves with deep gauntlet cuffs, or with several overlapping ruffles toward the wrist, are adopted for all wsh goods suits of the coming season. A Former Charlotteau. Mr John Vanlandingham, iwho has just returned from a visit to Florida, brings in teresting information concerning W H H Houston, the fjrger,' who jumped his bail in this city about a year ago,' and fled to Florida. Houston now has a wholesale and retail leather store and saddle and harness manufactory, in Ocala, and is said to be do ing a flourishing business. We haye before ui a copy of the Ocala Banner, in which he has an" advertisement measuring about a third of a column, signed "H Houston," He says that he intends to make enough money to pay ail of his debts in North Caro lina, and then come back here -to live in Charlotte again. He became mixed up in a pretty hard scrape down there not long ago, involving fraud upon his employers when ha was the manager of a large tannery, bat worked oat of it in some way or other, and legal steps were not instituted against him. Houston did not try .to conceal his North Carolihacharactef from the people among whom he has recently settled, but told them all about his "'irregularities" up here before anybody else had an' opportunity to do so. He is an odd character, this Houston. He is a yery Mulberry Sellars, and his dreams of the future are now of the brightest char acter. Seyere Storm, c . A terrific storm, such as has not been knewa here for a long Awhile, passed oyer this city on Sunday evening. In the after noon, the clouds began gathering with in creasing thickness, and before, they broke, hung in a heavy, black' mass close to the grbnnd, charged with electricity which1 oc casionally broke' forth, illuminating every thing with a bright, tnpernatural light. Pre sently the flood gates were opened, and rain and hail fell In torrents, accompanied by wind and .lightning. The storm continued, not a great while, but during that time raged with tremendous fury, the bait stones and large rain-drops falling ith the force of solid rocks. lure long, however, tne storm ceased to howl ;' the -clouds broke and dis appeared: by midnight-the. moon was out brighi aui'fulland fcnftrigb-tsun of yester day morning looked down upon streets as clean as if the city had been swept from ne end-to the other with a . great broom, with,, little pf eyen dampness to tell of the fury of the storr oftthe eveptag.' hefoje, and none of its traces' left except a look of beautiful tidiness on all hands. ;;.ia vii j ?'JL friend In the Steel Creek neighbdrllobd writes that the storm visited that section. .The hail-fell very heavily, at first in small lamps, bat before it ceased, fn Btones as large as a nartrfdVe eee and some as laree as aJ r guinea egg. ; It is not though that th4 hail did, any material injury totheropa.bf The .4 -storm seems ta have beeh pretty 'general Living Out Doers. There haye been two negroes in Morning Star Township, for the past two weeks, who live oat in the brash heaps and the thickets, and who are very ragged but are ss)d to be heayily armed. They go up to the houses occasionally and beg something to eat, and at nigbt their Ares are frequently seen gleaming in the midst of the thickets.- The impression prevails in that section that they are escaped jail-birds. Some time ago, some negroes escaped from ConcorJ jail, and these two may be of that gang. Much Smoke, Little Fire. On Sunday afternoon Mr W P Myers re ceive;! a telegram from a brother, at Monroe, telling him to come there by the next train, as he was under arrest for having shot a ne gro. Mr Myera went down and returned last evening. He found that on Sunday, for some impudence given him, his brother had drawn a pistol with which he struck a negro across the head. The pistol was dis charged at the time the blow was delivered, and as the negro had his face burned, and was knocked down, it was thought that he was seriously hurt. It turned out, however, that his only injury was that received by the blow from the pistol, and that this was but a gash on the head. . The Magistrate's fees were paid, and the case ended. - , Supreme Court Decisions. Opinions haye been filed by the Supreme Court, in the past few daysj n the following cases, among others.
