Washington, D. C, April 5. Gossip : A World special pays that Secretary Cameron and the President are too strong for Bristow. The Pittsburg Custom House frauds have been reached, without investigation. Gen. Merrill denies Custer's state ment that he took a bribe while Judge Advocate in Texas. The Foreign Committee with proba bly two exceptions,declare thatSchenck did reprehensible acts in becoimmg a director and speculator in Emma Mine, but was not guilty of intentional dishonesty. Two members are at tempting to show that Schenck's con nection with the mine was intention ally dishonest. Senate Edmunson and Thurman were appointed as a committee to wait upon the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and invite him to at tend in the Senate at 1 p. m. to-day and administer the impeachment oath to the Senators. The Committee on the War Department had Cashier Park, of the Bank of New York, before them, who said that Pendleton's ac count was closed, and all his checks, &c, sent to a Cincinnati Bank. Babcock, Luekey, aud Gen. Custer aro before Clymer's Committee. Park is before the Emma Mine Committee. His testimony shows the value of the mine when he owned it; in four months it yielded nearly seven mil lions. He found flush parties eager to purchase. They selected Silliman to examine the mine. He has not reach ed Schenck's connection yet. The Committee on Privileges and Elections hsd a secret session to-day regarding rulings in evidence in the Spencer case. The Elections Com mittee considered the reports of the sub-committee on Lemoine vs. far- well. It will be tried on Saturday. The sub-committee is divided in favor of Lemoine. The case is from Illinois Farwell is the sitting member, and a Republican. House. The Committee on Bank ing and Currency made their first re port of the season, by a biil regulating National Bank receivers. The Committee on Priveleges and Elections ruled out the letters sub mitted by Gen. Morgan, written by Soencer to Barber and others. The r defense will open to-morrow. WEATHER PROBABILITIES. Washington, April 5. Bristow is in Kentucky for his health, and remains for some time. Twenty per centof the clerks in the Tn asurer's office will be discharged on account of short appropriations. Taft refers applicants for po3t tra- derships to the commandants ot the posts for endorsement. The Finance Committee of the Sen ate is discussing the silver bill. Strong opposition to resumption is manifest ed. Its passage without amendment is improbable. Bristow paid the editor of a com mercial paper in St. Louis, who had excellent opportunities to obtain in formation of whiskey frauds, and shortly after appointed him special agert. lie had received a good deal of valuable information from newspaper men, but had not paid them a dollar with the above exception, and none had asked him lor pay. It" the news paper men had offered their services for pay, he would have paid them as much as anbody else, but none had of fered. In the War Department investiga tion, Chandler corroborated the state ment recently telegraphed regarding Bell. L. A. Barnes told Chandler that Bell had been in Babcock's service. Chandler gave Babcock, after his ac quittal, a check for $1,000 to help can eel his expenses. Chandler did not know that Bell .went to St. Louis in the service of Babcock or as a spy on the District Attorney. Luckey never spoke to Chandler about it. The At torney General, Luckey, Babcock and Bradley, will be heard to-morrow. Before the Privileges and Elections Committee, General Morgan made a motion to have the evidence ruled out as immaterial and irrelevant. Enter ed upon record as rejected. General Morgan asked leave to summon other witnesses. It has not been decided when the committee will adjourn. Senator Morton will deliver the ora tion on May 10th, decoration day, at Wilmington, N. C. HorsE. The Secretary of the Treas ury is directed to furnish an itemized account of the $300,000 for light and fuel for the year ending June 30th, '76. The bill to regulate the winding up of National Banks passed. Cox ex plained that its object was to enable insolvent banks to speedily close up their accounts in the interest of the public. There were some routine im peachment proceedings, and the House went into committee of the whole on the bill transferring the In dian Bureau to the War Department No action. Recess. Senate. The bill authorizing the payment of the Alabama Commission judgments, passed and goes to the President. A bill authorizing the sale of the-Pawnee Indian resurvation, passed, and goes to the President. A joint resolution was introduced to con firm the sale of the naval hospital and grounds at Natchez ; referred to the Committee on Public Buildings. Chief Justice Waite administered the impeachment oath to the Sena tors, and the Senate organized itself into a Court of Impeachment. Sum mons have issued against Belknap, re turnable on the 17th inst. The im peachment Court adjourned to the 17th, at half past twelve, and legisla tive business resumed. The bill regu lating third class mail matters wa3 taken up, and Hamlin made a long speech. Adjourned. After a conference to-day between A Resignation-A largely Attended Taft and Sherman, they visited the ELECTIONS. Result of Municipal Elections in Va rious Places Democratic Gains in Both Branches of the Connecticut Legislature. Chicago, April 5. The Republicans have carried the South and West towns; the North towns are very close St. Louis, April 5. The municipal election, yesterday, resulted in a ma jonty for the Democrats and lnae pendents. St. Joseth, Mo., April 5. At the municipal election, yesterday, the vote was probably the largest ever polled here. The Democrats elected their Mayor and most of the city ticket. Topeka, April 5. At the city elec tion, yesterday, the Republicans elect ed their Mayor and probably all of their city ticket. Hartford, April 5. Total vote 98,- 485. against 100.9S3 last year. Result j o ' - this year Robinson, 49,556; Ingersoll, 51,071; Smith, 1,871. Senate, 18 Dem ocrats aad 4 Republicans; the Demo crats gain 1.
