cock's evidence : Saw Bell first at head
quarters seeking employment as a de
tective. Heard of him next when
Luckey returned from St. Louis. Sent
for him and got much information
from Bell, which, at the suggestion of
Babcock's counsel, Bell reduced to an
affidavit. Babcock gave Bell about a
hundred dollars.
The Sereeant-at'Arms of the Senate
to-day served a writ on Belknap, who
was cheerful and talkative. He said'
that only one side had been beard.
Two hundred and twenty-seven
thousand dollars epent in furnishing
the New York Postoffice, in violation
of law, is under investigation by the
sub-committee on appropriations, hav
ing charge of the deficiency bill.
Postmaster Cochraue, ofSelma, de
fers to the Elections and Privileges
Committee, and repeats hia story be
fore the Alabama Commission that
there was no bargain between him
and Spencer. He has no recollection
of the conversation between himself
and Armstrong to which Armstrong
swore. Wm E Chandler is conduct
ing the defense.
Purman quoted before the Commit
tee on Civil Service, that, his election
cost him six thousand dollars, and he
was going to get some of it back; some
old fellow wanted a cadetship for his
son, and if he got it, would have to
pay for it. Blumenthal is quoted that
he had paid six hundred dollars in
good money.
The Foreign Committee have not
decided whether to confine tha inves
tigation of Emma Mine to Schenck's
connection with it. Meanwhile Park's
testimony regarding its value, is pro
gressing.

In the postoffice investigation, notes
were produced, showing that Sawyer
had paid Wm H Farror $30,000 on the
6th June, '72, and to J J Hindes, $7,-
500, with a memorandum in Sawyers
handwriting, that this was only half
the Hinds party got from the Ell Pa30
stage company.
Thos B Connery in charge of the
New York Herald, -van before Clymer's
committee on the subject of Bell. His
testimony was that he knew Bell, bad
a conversation with him, but declined
to answer the questions until he had
a consultation with Mr Bennett, for
which purpose the committee gave
him leave of absence till Tuesday.
The Sergeant-at-Arms of the House
sent a uoce to the Warden of the jail,
ordering him to furnish Hallet Ku
bourn meals at a cost not to exceed a
dollar per day, and charge the same
to the House of Representatives.

Postponement of the Application for
a Receiver; for the A, M & 0 Rail
road. Richmond, April 7. The case in the
United States Circuit Court inyolving
the application of certain bondholders
for the appointment of a receiver for
the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio Rail
road, was to-day postponed by Judges
Bond and Hughes till Tuesday, 2d of
May. Judge W D Shipman, of New
York, of counsel for the foreign bond-
holders.asked for the postponement for
the non-arrival of Mr. Collison, agent
of the foreign bondholders who, Judge
Shipman stated, would probably re
concile certain difficulties that it was
apprehended would arise in the pro
gress of the case between the Atlantic,
Mississippi & Ohio Railroad bond
holders, and the holders of the divia
ional bonds and thereby clear away
what might otherwise be a fruitful
source of embarrassment in the future
progress of the case. Other counsel
were present as follows : Henry T

tow and Robeson were absent from
the Cabiaent to-day.
In the Spencer investigation, M G
Cander testified that he knew of no
corrupt practices in electing Spencer.
H R Myers testified that he secured
the appointment of Moulton as post
master at Mobile, against Spencer s
wish. He knew of no corrupt prac
tices to secure Spencer's election. The
case closed and the coucsel were al
lowed two weeks to prepare written
arguments.
House. It was a private bill day.
The Committee on Military Affairs, to
allow Gen Godfrey Wetzell to accept
the office of Trustee of the Cincinnati
Southern Railroad Company, provided
that it do not interfere with the per
formance of his official duties in the
army. After a good deal of discussion ,
the bill was rejected: yeas 89, nays 128.
The sub-committee on naval afiairs
wag ordered to proceed to Philadel:
phia, to inquire about the alleged
frauds in the Philadelphia and League
Island navy yardi. Forty private bills
passed, including one jelieving the
widow of Gen Lovell Kosseau, ana
granting the right of way for the Hot
Springs Railroad over the Hot Springs

Steamship Captain Found Quilty.
London, April 7. It is believed that
the same rule will be applied to the
case of Gray, of New York, and Brent,
of Louisville, forgers, that governs in
the Winslow case.
Betting is 3 to 1 in favor of Cam
bridge: Eight of the crew of the ship Lennig,
have been committed for trial ou the
charge of mutiny and murder.
The Board of Trade returns for
March show, as compared with the
corresponding months of '74 and '75, a
decline of 10 and 4 per cent, respec
tively in the value of exports, and 8
and 10 per cent respectively in the
value of imports. The grain trade for
the week has been dull and somewhat
depressed. The Continential trade was
quiet.
Captain Kahn, of the Franconia,
which sunk the Strath Clyde, has been
convicted of manslaughter. Sentence
waits the decision of the Court of
Appeals on question of jurisdiction.

A Trusted Kan Absconds.
Chicago, April 7. Frank Camblas,
a member of the Board of Trade, with
drew hia account from the Bank and
absconded, leaving over a half million
bushels of wheat unpaid for. Cam-
bias has been a bull and bought large
ly during the recent rise. His loss on
the whole amount is 2 to 3 cents per
bushel. Tbe members who lost have
been obliged to throw a large amount
of wheat on the market, occasioning a
rapid decline.
