The Raleigh News Company Acquit ted of Libel, Raleigh, April 21. John D Cam eron, editor of the Raleigh Daily News, and Clark Blacknall, and other stock holders of News Publishing Company, indicted for libel iu charging Josiah Turner, Jr., with attempting to pay off Matthew Atwater, a candidate for the last Convention from Orange county, with promise of his per diem, that he (Turner) might become a candidate, were tried yesterday before Judge Henry. The defendants justified by proving the Iruth of the charge, and the jury, after a few minutes consultation among themselves, returned a verdict of not guilty. NEBRASKA. The Democrats in Favor of Tilden. Amaiia, April 20. The Democratic State Convention held at Lincoln yes terday, -was the largest and most in fluential ever held in tha State. Reso lutions for hard money and reform were adopted with unanimity. Two thirds of the Convention favored the nomination of Gov Tilden for Presi dent, but no formal expression was given to this preference. The dele gates were chosen to the National Convention. The delegates are known to be for Tilden unanimously. WASHINGTON. Grant Excited-He Denies the Charges The Cabinet Called Together Taft Cutting Down More Unearth ing to be Done The Proof Collect ing: Against Babcock-Statement from the Agricultural Department. Washington-, D. C, April 21. A Tl'orM special says the President is not disposed to be as indifferent to the charges against him as some of his supporters. He was thoroughly arous ed and excited to-day, and in general terms denounced the statement made by ex-Attorney General Williams a3 untrue. He says he ha3 no recollec tion of Williams calling on him to disburse the money for Davenport's use, to be a different matter and that he has been deceived. The President has further resolved on a full investi gation of the charge, and has desired to take the advice of the Cabinet in the premises. For that purpose he has sent a personal request to each member to meet to morrow at 11 o'clock for a special consultation on the subject. It has been decided that Belknap drew his pay up to the 2d of March as Secretary of War. Bristow replies to the committee that the law gives him discretion as to the manner of selling bonds. He thought the sums of half a million best, and did not propose to change it. Taft is cutting down Belknap's es timates five or six million. A Times special says there are the most astounding rumors new afloat as to the future use to which Whitley is to be put in the matter of the investi gation. It is said among other things, that he will go before many investiga tions committees. Whitley's frauds show that he himself was a member of the ring, and - he will then tell a story implicating prominent parties and produce letters and documents to show conclusively the guilt of Babcock. There is also to be shown through the agency of Whitley or somebody else, that the President's name has been used in an unauthorized way if not indeed actually forged to documents by Babcock. All the seeds at the Agricultural Department have been disposed of ex cept a few that have been reserved for Northern sections, which as yet have received none. The demand has been and is still very great. Much com plaint has been Biade by correspond ent applicants, 'for seed, that letters have not been answered. The daily receipt of letters is so great, oftea amounting to a thousand, that the force of the Department is inadequate to answer all. In all cages where let ters are such as require an answer, such is made without delay. FLASHES. Quincy, Ills., April 21. The cre vasse in the increased flood, extends from the river to the bluffs between Hannabal and Louisiana. Lancaster, Pa,, April 21. O. J. Dickey, who succeeded Thad Stevens in Congress, is dead. A Batch of New3 and Gossip Upon Many Subjects. Washington, D. C, April 21. The President has signed the bill improving the capitol grounds. Blaine is preparing a statement about hi3 Arkansas bonds. Y.; Lieut Greene, from Augusta, Ga., to Springfield, Mass.; Lieut. Smith, from Fortress Monroe to New York; Capt Grealish, from Maryland to Augusta. The Cabinet adjourned at half past eleven, and the President went to Philadelphia. W J Raymond, post trader at Fort Barthold, has paidOrville Grant $1,000 $1,200 and is 3till ready to respond to any reasonable draft he may make ac cording to agreement. Don Piatt tes tified in the Moth contract, thathegot five per cent, and wanted more, where upon the owners told him they had expenses which would not bear inves tigation; whereupon Piatt drew out and had their contract stopped. It is claimed that Commissioner Davenport, instead of having copies of registration made as provided by law, did it after a method of his own, great ly to the satisfaction of the President, and saving a large amount of money, but leading to the questionable expen diture of 30,000. The House Committee on the Pa cific Railroad gave further considera tion to the Jsill extending the time for the completion o.f the Texas Pacific Railroad. Throckmorton's amend ment proposing that the Southern Pacific Company, of California, shall be allowed to construct a road East ward from the Colorado River, and re lieve the Texas Pacific land grant for such portion of the Trans-Continental line of Railroad, as it anticipates the latter in building within the next six years. The Committee adjourned without action until next Wednesday. The Schenck investigation has clos ed, except the refcepTron of the-papers from London. Oilman has been released on $12,- 000 bail. Parker, of E:nma Mine, refuses to answer how much he made out of the concern. Mr Falkner, of Virginia, will oppose compulsion. The Supreme Court may award a writ of prohibition, and that if the Supreme Court shall not be in session at the time, any Judge of such court may take such action with a right of appeal to the Supreme Court. The investigation of Bristow's con nection with the release of the steam boat has been transferred from the Committee on Treasury Expenditures to the Committee on Ways and Means by a vote of 170 to 38. The Indian hill was resumed and passed. Adjourned. House. Knott introduced bill to regulate the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus in certain cases. Refer red to the Judiciary Committee. It provides that the Supreme Court shall have original and exclusive jurisdic tion to issue the writ of habeas corpus m all cases where the party shall be de tained or restrained of his liberty by the "authority or the orders of either House of Congress; that when ever it shall appear by the petition that the party is detained or restrain ed of his liberty by the authority of either House of Congress before any State or United States Judge or court, other than the Supreme Court of the United States, the writ shall be den-ied if not issued, or dismissed if issued. NEW YORK. Dolan's Execution He Protests His Innocence Transfer of Insurance Capital. New York, April 21. Dolan shed a a few tears after he was bound. He was brought out at 9:35, and walked firmly to the gallows in the sunlight. He stood under the gibbet but a minute. The drop was cut with a thud, and the body rose in the air. He struggled but a little, and died com paratively easy. Dolan wrote a letter to his counsel last night, thanking him for his strenuous efforts in his behalf, and, repeating his declaration of innocence of the murder of Mr Noe. Negotiations are pending which will probably transfer . $30,000,000 of fire and life insurance capital from New York to New Jersey. Some of the largest life insurance companies have already secured New Jersey charters. WEATHER PROBABILITIES. 0 Washingtok, April 21.
