Outrage Upon a United States Consul Reparation Promised to Germany Cuban News- Paris, May 8. From detail of the outrage at Solonica received here, it appears that the United States Consul interfered for the protection of a Greek girl who waa the innocent cause of a disturbance, and conducted her to the consulate in a carriage. An excited mob thereupon surrounded the con sulate and the French and German Consuls who were brothers-in-law. and both related by marriage to the Ameri can Consul, believing him t be in danger, proceeded to his assistance, and on the way thither were attacked. The Italian Consul informed the Gov? ernor of the state of affairs, ande sent troops to the relief of the Ameri can Consulate which was besieged by the rabble. London, May 9. A Horse Car Accident Connection with Europe Restored Rubenstein Dead The Late Tunnel Explosion. . New Yoek, May 9 A horse car fell from the elevator at Hoboken, last night, by a fake start, and two were killed. Communication with Europe by the Anglo-American cable, is now restored. There were 27 passengers on the street car which fell from the elevator at Jersey City Heights last night. None were killed outright. Four received injuries which may prove fatal. Eight or ten others were hurt, the most of them seriously, but not dangerously. The cause of the accident is attributed to the carelesiness of the truckman, who rang the bell for the engineer to go ahead before the car had passed safely on the truck. Pesach N Rubenstein, the condemn ed murderer of the Jewess, Sarah Alexander, died this morning at 10 o'clpck in his cell at Raymond street jail, Brooklyn. The cause of his death was general debility. The contractor of Bergin Tunnel, when the explosion took place Satur day night, says he saw 12 or 13 tunnel men come from the direction of Hobo ken on Saturday night and go up the "Hundred Steps." After they reached the top of the hill, he heard the report of a pistol and soon after, the explo sion occured. He did not dare to go out, as he was afraid of his life on ac count of the strikers. He stated that the iron door of the magazine was found in the Elysian fields two miles distant, yesterday evening. WASHINGTON. All Hands Gone to the Centennial. Washikqtok, D. C, May 9. For the twenty-four hours walking match, for $5,000, fourteen English pedestrians contested. Mr Miles made fifty miles in eight hours and forty eight minutes and twenty-eight sec onds; Foster second. Mr Vaughan is regarded as probable winner. He completed ninety-nine miles in eigh teen hours and forty-one minutes and twenty seconds. . - Later.- Vaughan completed one hundred miles, beating O'Leary's time two minutes and, five seconds. Ex Congressman Smith of Louisiana, who leaves for home to-night, reports that the members of the Senate and Koose Committees on railroads have agreed to report that the eastern terminus of the Texas Pacific It. R. shall be chang ed to Vicksburg. On the North, the Louisiana R. R, shall be subsidized as Vicksburg branch. The railroad ticket sellers of the South reached here this morning, en route to Philadelphia to attend the opening ceremonies of the Centennial Exposition as guests of Col Foreachera, on the Virginia Midland route. Nearly every Southern city is represented in the party which is un der charge of W. D. Chipley, General Southern agent of the line. The party breakfasted this morning at the relay station by invitation of the Baltimore & Ohio R. It. The Star says Secretary Bristow is already the target of the Blander circu lators. It is now charged that he sus pended proceedings against John Buck ner, who was Collector of Internal Revenue at Louisville, and defaulted to the extent of $100,000, because Mr Miles, the foster father of Mrs Bris tow, who died recently, leaving Mrs Bristow a handsome legacy is on the bond of the defaulter, and to proceed against him would involve the sstate. It is farther said that the matter has been quietly investigated by the Ways and Means Committees. The impeach ment presented against Belknap sets forth that he was Secretary of War, on June 16th, 1873, at which time, a cer tain question, matter, cause, or pro ceeding, was pending in relation to the appointment and retention in of fice of the Trader at Fort Sill, in the Indian Territory: That he did unlaw fully and corruptly accept aqd receive the sum of $1,700, from one Caleb P. Marsh, with intent to the question pending, influenced, and did appoint one John S. Evans as Post Trader, in consideration of having received said sum. NEW YORK. Investigations by Naval Committee. Examination of Roach, Ship Builder and Contractor Nothing Important Elicited More Whisky Indictments Vigilance Committee in Existence in Brooklyn. New York, May 9. The sub-Committee of Naval Expenditures, which is in session at the Astor House, ex amined John Roach, ship builder and contractor. The examination con tinued six hours. Roach gave a de tailed account of his transactions with the government during the past ten years. He denies having improperly influenced officials. He claimed that all his transactions were fair and above board. He had paid political assessments once; contributed to the election of Gov. Hoffman; and gave in this way about as much to one party as the other. The Brooklyn Superintendent of Police was notified to-day that a vigil ance committee had been organized in that city to hunt up burglars and murderers. The Committee styles it self LaFayette Tribe Company No. 1 of the city of Brooklyn, organized the eighteenth of September, 1SG9. The police are hunting the matter up. The Grand Jury -of the criminal branch of the United States Court pre sented thirty indictments; most of which it is understood are against crooked whiskey men of high stand ing. The rain last night extinguished the forest fires which had already destroyed thousands of acres in Pike county. Chicago, May 9. Fire in a Theatre Remarkable Self Possession of an Actor. Bridgeport, May 9. During Barry Sullivan's "performance of Richard the Third, dense smoke rolled from the stage. The panic was arrested by the actor crying that the fire was out smoke increased play stopped, and the audience found the way safely down the narrow stair case from the second story.
