Last night a fire broke out in the engine room of the propeller John Taylor, lying at the docket of the Athens & Schenectady Railroad opposite the city. The flames extended to other vessels at the dock, and the depot and two buildings, which were almost totally destroyed. The John Taylor, the bark Hercules, loaded.' with sugar;' the canal ' boat Stephen Warren, with a cargo of mer chandize were burned. The vessel be longed to the line of John H Stovin. The depot, 1600 feet long, build at great expense by Daniel Drewtand known as the "White Elephant," was nearly destroyed, with its contents, in' eluding freight. 100 freight Cars stand ihg bli the i track, loaded with flour, corn, oats, and tobaceo were totally codaumed. The Impeachment Court decided tojproceed with the trial, July 6th. Adjourned. It was further ordered that the trial can only proceed while Congress is in session, and that the Secretary shall subpoena such witnesses at the ex pense of the United States as shall be allowed by the committee, and that subpoenas for all other witnesses for respondent shall contain a statement that the witnesses therein named shall attend upon the trial of respondent for half of their lawful fees. FOREIGN. Explosion on a Vessel Failure- Communism Among Negroes. London, June 19. By a coal gas ex plosion on the ship Atlantic, loaded with coal for Hong Kong, six were killed, several injured and the vessel seriously damaged. Hinway & Reese, grain merchants of Cardiff, have failed for a million dol lars. The Bishop and Archdeacon and thirty-four clergymen of Barbadoes, have signed a statement to Earl Car- riwan, that the riots in that island were not caused .by suffering among the negroes, but by mischievous re ports that the land of the planters was to be divided among them. The clergy have no idea how the impression was created, but it still exists. It will re quire firmness on the part of the gov ernment to. remove the impression. Frederick William Robertson's pos thumous volume contains this passage : "In the darkest hour through which a human soul can pass, whatever else is doubtful, this is at least certain. If there be no God and no future state, yet even then, it is better to be generous than selhsn. better to- be chaste than licentious, better to be true than false, better to be brave than to be a coward."
