Mrst Alpnzo Harlej, who lives near Silverton, Ai ken county, S. C, was' assaulted at her residence last Friday, by two negro men, Harley was at work on his farm and Mrs Harley was alone with her son, aged nine years, and an infant three weeks old. She was ' knocked down two or three times, her screams and those of ler boy alarmed the ne groes who fled. When the report of the assault on Mrs: Harley became known, the citizens assembled and made search for the negroes, one of whorii was arrested and shot ; the oth er negro escaped- On Saturdry a war rant was issued for his arrest and the warrant was placed in the hands of thfe constable, who, with the aid of a posse of wh ites, attempted to make the arrest, which was resisted by a large crowd of negroes, said to be 200, armed with shot guns and Winchester rifles. Sunday, the excitement continued, both whites and blacks were fully arm ed and watching each other's move ments. There are reports of a skirm ish during the day, in which two or three persons were wounded. Toward night a compromise was agreed upon, both parties agreeing to disband and retire to their homes. The negroes agreed to surrender the colored man who made the aesault on Mrs Harley, and deliver him over to the authori ties at Aiken. With this understand ing the whites dispersed and while re tiring to their homes, it is reported that several of the latter were ambush ed and shot by the negroes. The city ia full of rumors as to the number kill ed, but nothing definite is known, Later. It is ascertained up to this hour, that the passenger train from Augusta for Port Royal, which left this morning at eight o'clock has re turned. Proceeding to Jackson Sta tion, the track was found to be torn up, and the freight train which left here at six o'clock this morning, was wrecked, and the negroes had posses sion of tbe road. Supt Fleming, of thVPort Royal Hoad," has telegraphed the State of affairs to Gov Chamber lain asking him for troops. He has also applied to Lieut Barahardt of the United States Army, stationed at Ham burg, for assistance, and a number of citizens have left for the scene of the disturbance, which is about 20 miles from Augusta, on the Port Royal Road. VJEitY Latest. Latest xeport from the 6cene of the riot in South Carolina is that one white man is wounded and six negroes killed. News from Crookf-Troops Sent Out in searcn ox ooa. Washinqtox, D. C, Sept. 18. The Herald publishes a three column elaboration of the semi-official 'ac count telegraphed Saturday night. The details are contradictory and re sults of the fight seems to have been that the troops were in haste in anxie ty to get away from the Indians. The following is the very latest : Crook City, Black Hills, Sept 12, ) VlAF0RTLARAMIE,WYT,Septl6'76 ) "Yesterday morning Gen Crook dis patched a party of the oth Cavalry, men from his camp on Owl Creek, to press forward to the Black Hills and send back provisions for the hungry troops. Col. Mills was in command, and Lieut Bubb commissary officer was sent to bring food. The dried meat and fruit captured in the Indian village near Slim Butter, was not sufficient as was supposed to sustain the column until it could reach the Black Hills, and on the 10th horses were again butchered and issued as rations. The advance party was a sort of forlorn hope. The Captured Indians had said thet many war parties were prowling near the Belle Fourcbe river and Hot hills, especially-the braved of Crazy Horse's band. Col. Mills gives thefbllqwingaccount of the expedition : "The relief party was mounted on captured Indian ponies. We left the main column in a dense mist and bitter storm, and marched by. the , guidance. of the com pass along our trail, describing many eccentricities. During the night fol lowing, it was impossible to distinguish any landmark,, darkness. was impene trable . Next day; we were cheered by the breaking of the m ist and a glimpse seenv and espied the outlines of the Black Hills. By rapid riding we reach ed their base, at; the . mouth of White wpod Congor at . dusk. Leaving most f the party there, I galloped on with Captain- ffaek arid7 Hawaiian Frank, to Crook 1 City, ; The Indian . iBlack Wolf had hinted it :: was deserted by the miners on account of the Sioux's:per- seoutions, but w vreife delighted after rattling through-"the timbered gulch, to see th6 lgnts glinimer in the dark ness, i Plenty oil i ood.i stored here, and Gen. Crook will to-morrow be met at the Belle PouVche by loaded wagons! and a herd of beeves,. ; The Black Hills are. infected by hundreds of Sioux, and. people are killed daily.
