WASHINGTON !
JEST GOF. JBi20 WN OF TENNESSEE
ON THE LOUISIA HA C OM
MISSION. PACKARD APPEALING FOR HELP
HAMPTON AND CHAMBERLAIN
INVITED TO WASHINGTON. O
DATES' LETTER TO THEH.
Washington, March 23.
Unearthed after midnight:
I ulaska. Tenn.. March 22. 187.
To Hon.D. M. Key, Postmaster-General'.
If it is believed that my co operation
will contribute any thing toward a pa
cific solution of the troubles in Louisi
ana, my services are at the command
of tbe President, on the basis suggest
ed in your dispatches of to-day. Ad
vise me fully of the determination of
the President. John C Brown.
The President has appointed Gov.
Brows.
The President has received, by tele
graph, a resolution of the Packard
Legislature, calliag for aid to protect
the State against insurrection, but has
paid no attention to it.
The formal presentation of the. pa
pers and application of Foster Blod
gett, as Marshall of Georgia, was made
by Senator Morton, and not Senator
Hill.
The results of the consideration by
the Cabinet of the outh Carolina ques
tion, has been the sending a letter to
Chamberlain and Hampton, inviting
them here in person or by delegate, to
confer with the President on the situ
ation of affairs in that State.
The following is a copy of the letter;
Executive Mansion, 1
Washington, D. C, March 23, 77. J
To Hon D H Chamberlain :
Sir: I am instructed by the Presi
dent, to bring to your attention, hia
purpose to take into consideration the
position of affairs in South Carolina,
with a view of determining the course
which, under the constitution and
aws of the United States, it may be
his duty to take in reference to the
situation in that State, as he finds it,
upon succeeding to the Presidency.
It will giye the President great pleas
ure to confer with you in person, if
you shall find it convenient to visit
Washington, and shall concur with
him in thinking such conference the
readiest and best mode of placing your
views as to the political situation in
your Slate 'before him. He would,
greatly prefer this direct communica
tion of opinion and information, to
any other method of ascertaining your
views upon the present condition and
immediate prospect of public interests
in South Carolina. If reasons of weight
with you should discourage this course,
the President will be glad to receive
any communication from you, in writ
ing, or through any delegate possess
ing your confidence, that will convey
to him your views of the impedimenta
to the peaceful and orderly organiz? -of
a single and undisputed State gov
ernment in South Carolina, and of the
best methods of removing them. It is
the earnest desire of the President to
be able put an end as speedily as pos
sible to all appearance of intervention
of the military authority of the United
States in political derangements, which
effects the government, and effects the
people of South Carolina. In this de
sire, the President cannot doubt he
truly represents the patriotic feeling of
the great body f the people of the
United States. It is impossible that
protracted disorder in the domestic
government of any State can or should
ever fail to be a matter of lively interest,
and solicitude to the people of the whole
country. In furtherance of the prompt
and safe execution of this central pur
pose, he invites a full communication
f your opinion on the whole subject
in such one of the proposed forms as
may seem to you most useful. By the
direction of the President, I have ad
dressed to the Hon Wade Hampton,
a duplicate of this letter.
I am very respectfully,
Your obedient servant,
W. K. Rogers, Private Sec'y.
Iflidnlght.
Washington, March 23.

Lee on the Road to Execution
Guarded by Soldiers
Salt Lake, March 2 J. The Marshall
left Beaver with - Lee for Mountain
Meadow where the execution is to take'
place. A company of soldiers accom
pany the party to prevent a rescue.
: later;
At 11 A. M., precisely, Lee was
brought out upo the , scene of the
massacre, at Mountain Meadow, before
the executing party, and seated on his
coffin, about twenty feet from the
Bhooters. After tbe order of the court
was read to him and the company pre
sent, by Marshall Nelson, Lee m ade a
speech of about .five hundred words,
bitterly denouncing Brigham Young
and calling himself a scape-goat, for
the sins of others. Hehopf d God would
be merciful. He denie'd that he was
guilty of bloodshed to th ,last, and
maintained that his mission to Moun
tain Meadow was one of mercy. After
the speech, Parson Stokes, Methodist,
made a prayer, commending the soul
of the condemned man to God. Im
mediately after this a handkerchief
was placed over Lee's eyes. He raised
his hands and placed them on top of
his head, sitting firm. Marshal Nelson
giving the word fire, five , guns fired,
the balls penetrating the body in the
region of the heart. Lee fell square
back on his coffin, dead. Death was
instantaneous. The body was placed
in the coffin, and the crowd dispersed
There were about 75 persons, all told,
on the ground. Not a child or rela
tive was there. The best order prevail
ed. Lee's last words to Marshal Nel
son were, "Aim at my heart." The
body.is now on the way to be deliver
ed to his relatives at Cedar City.

of respectable family connections, was
married to Miss Hannah Weil, daugh

her fathers residence, Friday evening,
by Justice Creiehton. Feeline that her
parents would oppose the match, as it
is against the Jewish creed to inter.
marry with other people, she went to
ner lamer, and put to him the
folio wine; insurmountable interrogator-

"Father, how old am If" ;
Father Nineteen years old my dau

Daughter When does a youne lady
become of lawful age?
l ather At the age of eighteen.
Daughter Then I am ; free to
act for myself, am I not, fath

Father I see no objection to it.
Daughter Well, then, Mr. Oliver
oves me ever so much, and I love him
ever so much. I want you to consent
to our marriage, for if you do not I
fear we will have to run away, and I'd
much rather be married at home.
The father was very much astonish

when he found her betrothed a Chris

the matter awhile, give the sensible
response "Well, if you are bound to
marry, 1 would rather you would be
quietly married at home."
And so the young people were
married and left -for Hunts ville that
evening.
