The Democrats are again allowing
themselves" to become hopeful. The
hour and a half interview accorded
Senator Bruce and Representative
Lynch seems to have had for its object
heir reconcilement to tbe present loss
to the Republicans of .Louisiana and
South Carolina. The President argued
tbat this course would create new
political combinations ; that it would
certainly lead to the early recovery of
Mississippi and North Carolina, and
eventually break the color line in all
he Southern States.
Discussing the personnel of the Com
mission with Qen. Gibson, tbe Presi
dent said, "General Harlan had been
very radical, but is now in accord with
me on,. the Southern question." The
President intimated to General Gibson
that if the Commission allowed itself
to be partial itWO'd be towards the
Conservatives.
The entire Louisiana party left for
home this morning, not confident, but
quite hopeful. There is nothing feared
now in tbe South Carolina case, but
delay r ' - ,
The delegations from the Charleston
Chamber of Commerce have divided
themselves into committees to call
on tbe several Secretaries.
A popular demonstration in honor
of Gov. Hampton has been with great
persuasion avoided by the Conserva
tive leaders, who apprehend that under
the circumstances it would not be in
good taste.
It is said to-day, by gentlemen who
have called upon the President in be
half of the Hampton government, that
while he favors that government he as
yet sees no means by which Chamber
lain can be satisfactorily disposed of.
The statement telegraphed hence,
that Senator Gordon and Secretary
Schurz had drawn up a paper which
Gov. Hampton refused to sign, is un
true in all its details.
The Cabinet are discussing yester
day' interview with Gov. Hampton.

ica, and J J. Stewart. They urge that
tbe most favorable consideration be
given to the Charleston committee's
views, and say if time had permitted
they would have had the dispatch very
generally signed.
Evarts in conversation, said distinct
ly that when the. President was pre
pared to act, he would do so on his
own responsibility, not seeking to place
any part of the burden on the repre
sentatives of either side and the parties
they represent.
; Secretary Sherman talked very free
ly; he said the President would of
course take the decision in the South
Carolina case, but the hope was to re
lieve the State If one of two govern
ments in such a peaceful manner as to
insure peace and the absolute enjoy
ment of the rights of the colored peo
ple. Much stress was laid on the point.
Though no direct knowledge is obtain
able from official sources as to inten
tions of the Government regarding
South Carolina, there is an impression
sustained by various facts that the end
of the deliberations now progressing
will be an order withdrawing the troops
from the State House at Columbia, and
the censequent practical recognition
of Gov Hampton.

taining tea and silk from San Francisco
March 20th, via the Baltimore & Ohio
line, reached here at 6 P. M., to-day,
making tbe trip in ten days.

Pork Packing Statistics Found

Cixciskatx, March 30. The pork
packing statistics of the West show an
increase of 192,204 in numbers, but one
and seventy three hundredth pounds
decrease in average weight. Mess pork
increases 91,445 bbls; lard decrease, one
and forty-two hundredths pounds per
head. Total packed, five million and
seventy-two thousand three hunlred
and thirty-nine lbs.
Near Walton, Ky., Tuesday night, a
negro named Parktr Mayo, attempted
an assault upon the perso.i of a nine
year old daughter of Wm Murray, du
ring the absence of her parents. The
child was seriously iigured. The next
day he attempted the same on a farm
er'a wife residing in the vicinity. At
about 2 o'clock this morning, his body
was found hanging to the limb of a
tree about a mile from the town.
