At Sar gent's ranch e, about two miles, from' Kocklin, Placer , county, Mr Sargant, his foreman Axvier Louis Oder and Mrs Oder, were murdered by China men. ! The citizens assembled j and drove the Chinamen out of town and destroyed the Chinese quarters. V The rouble is unaerstoott to nave arisen in connection with mining claima; in? this vicinity. - - : LItee. Yesterday afternoon som e persons passing near Sargant's ranche,' about two miles from Bocklin, Placer county; heard several pistol shots and as they approached the hotise, saw two men who scaled .the, fence land ran away. ' On entering 7 th e house the body of Mrs Oder who, with her hus band and servant, occupied the prem ises, was touna on tne noor. one had heen shot twice and her headsplit open " with an axe. An alarm" was given, and a party of constables and citizens began a search. About f fifty yards from the house the body of Mr Oder was found. He had received three pistol shots. The party then fol- owed the. trail of the men who were seen to jump the fence. These tracks showed that tbey were Chinese. After crossing the ravine, ithree-quarters of a mile from the house, in a clump of willows, tbey iound bargant bleeding: from wounds on the head and body, but conscious. He jtated that two Chinamefthjcalledjathe house in the afttraoQ&rand desired to purchase certain mining "claims from him; he accompanied them to the claim, and while returning they shot him five times in the body and head, and left him for dead. He said his assassins were from Persyn, a neighboring vil lage, one of them being a cook at Grant's boarding house, near Persyn quarry. He had received $120 from another Chinaman a few. days before tor a mining claim, w men was in a trunk at his hcuse. The party follow ed the tracks of the murderers to a Chinese cabin near at hand, where they captured three Chinamen, one of whom was in bed, but perspiring Ireely as though ne had been running, bev eral other Chinamen living near were arrested, one of whom was much frightened. He volunteered informa tion that Ah Sam and Ah Jim had murdered Sargant, but would say no more. One of the prisoners had $120 in his possession. It was found that the trunk in which Sargant deposited his money had been cut open and robbed. Sargant died this morning. ' Hundreds of citizens viewed the dead bodies to-day. The excitement was intense during the night, and had the evidence against the prisoners been deemed conclusive, they would have been: lynched. The cook at Grant's boarding house could not be found, though the country and towns for miles around were searched in the pur suit. " This morning a meeting of citizens, held at liocklin, all Chinese were noti fied to leave the place by 6 o'clock p m. .before 4 o clock the last squad ol Jni namen, burdened by their baggage, filed out of the town, including those employed by the railroad company, the prisoners being the only Chinese remaining. They were m no way mo leated bv the excited crowd. At 6 p m the citizens marched to the Chinese Quarters and demolished all the build ings, twenty-five in number, including a store, the owner 01 which pad moveo his stock oil. At the inquest on the bodies of the murdered persons to-day, the facts de veloped led the sheriff to believe the four Chiuamen In custodyjare implicate ed in the murders, and he ordered their removal to the county jail at Au burn. A crowd collected when tbe officers with their prisoners boarded the train, and the mutterings ot the crwd broke out into exclamations, such as "Have them out! Hang them!" A rush was made for the doors of th e car and the sheriff and his deputy were seized upon, and but for a fair show ef pistols by the omcers and the condup tor of the train, the purpose of the mob would have been accomplished. The crowd was finally forced back, and the train moved out from the station amid the yells of the throng. The moderation displayed by the citizens, with the excention of the above inci dent, was partly due to the fact that throuehout the day. and by common consent, all saloon keepers closed their places, otherwise serious consequences would undoubtedly have ensued. The coroner's iurv found that the murder of Sargant was committed by Ah Sam, Ah Jim and another. Chinaman on known. Sarsant was an old and re spected resident. along the railroad to the depot, and the people a better opportunity to see him. . . .-, : .: - ' r Louisvrxu:, September 17. The Daily News' correspondent telegraphing from before Plevna, recounts a visit to the Gravitza redoubt, and says that it is almost .untenable, the approach being swept by the Turkish redoubt only twe hundred and fifty yards distant. On Wednesday, the interior of the redoubt was still piled with dead around in a ghastly, indistinguishable mass, the fire of the Turks having prevented the ap proach of the surgeons and litter-bear ers. On the return of the News' corres pondent from the redoubt, the Scottish correspondent who accompanied him was slightly wounded. The Turks in Montenegro have been ordered to act on the defensive. The Times' Bucharest correspondent telegraphs as follows, under date of Sunday : "A dispatch reached here this morning from the imperial head quarters, stating that the Turks had made a desperate effort to recapture the Uravitza redoubt, making seven in effectual assaults and losing ten thou sand men." The official Russian bulletins dated Poredin, Saturday, says : "The bom bardment of Plevna was continued yes terday. The Turkish batteries scarcely replied. Major Generals Skobeloff, Dragontoff and Trueretinzy have been promoted to Lieutenant Generals. On the loth mst., the lurks placed three eighty pound mortars between Shipka and Fort St Nicholas, and bombarded the fort. On the 13th we lost forty killed, and one hundred and seventeen on the 14th inst." Constantinople, September 17 10.40 A. M. A dispatch from Shumla, states that Suleiman Pasha yesterday took Fort St Nicholas, and tbe Turkish flag now floats over the Russian works. Previous to the capture of the fort, the Russians, who bad received consider able reinforcements, made several un successful attacks upon the Turkish posi tions cannonading the Gam br ova road. London, September , 17. The News pecond edition publishes the following special, dated Bucharest, Sunday night, Sept lbth : "Col w euesly has j ust ar riyed from Russian headquarters be fore Plevna. He reports all quiet there except the intermittent firing around the Grovica redoubt, which is still held by the allied torces. Military opera tions really closed Wednesday evening when the Turks recaptured the double redoubt, taken by Gen Skobeloff. When the Russian compaanderrinrchief would not or could not send reinforcements to hold this redoubt, it was only too evident that the attack was at an end. The Russians have not, however, aban doned their positions, and do not seem disposed to do so. On the contrary they are fortifying them. Suleiman Pasha has, it is said, effected a junction with Mehemet Ali. It seems probable that their combined forces may attempt something against the army, ol the czar e witch, which being already ob liged to retire before this junction, was effected, may now be forced to retreat still farther, "The imperial guard now arriving rapidly may put another face on the affairs." The correspondent describing Wed nesday's battle, says : "Gen Skobeloff lost two thousand men in attacking the redoubt : ' he lost 3,000 more in holding it." The Daily News, a strong pro-Russian paper, sums up the morning's ; mtellv gence in a leading article as follows : "Looking impartially at the facts as presented this morning to the public. we are unable to form any other con clusion than tbat the attack on .Plevna has only failed, but so failed that it can not be renewed under the condition in which the Russian commander finds himself placed. ? He has attempted what the great German commanders never attempted in their France cam paigns, and used up his - slight superi oritv of men with extraordinary rapidi ty. He is liable to be attacked at a given part of his front by a force larger than any which he can. assemble there, In a word, he is broken. The battle re ported at Dubrik, in which the Rus siang were said to have been defeated must have been at a village five miles northwest of Vratz on the Rhava road Reports say that Osman Pasha has for tified a position almost impregnable up on which he will retire, u driven from Plevna.
