Further to the left from Uravitza stands Kerdenkon s corps, w men nas been reinforced since the battle by parts of two divisions from iiussia. in ext stands oeatons corps, fearfully redueed in numbers, the bat talions being brought down to three Hundred men. On the extreme left. near Tatchenitza, is the Imretinsky de tachment, viz: the second division and fourth rifle brigade. The latter is di minished from four to two weak bat talions. Here are also the remains of Skobeloffs detachment. The spirit and temper of the Russian soldiers are admirable. 1 he Russians have upward of 320 guns, and are constantly firing on the Turkish works which scarcely ever reply. It is said that the ammu nition of the Turks is failing, but there are no means of verifying this. They walk about the redoubts most uncon cernedly. The Russians are strongly entrenched all along their front with shelter-trenches, rifle-pits and redoubts Twelve to sixteen regiments of Russian and .Roumanian cavalry are hovering about the Sofia road to impede, if they do not wholly stop communications. The Turks refused Seatoff leave to bury bis dead which lie within three hun dred yards of the Russian positions, and must breed disease. ine uatty jyews' .Bucharest corres pondent, telegraphing Thursday, says : "It is confessed that the Russian posi tion in Shipka pass is precarious, both because of the force threatening it, and of the impending trouble to their com munications.'' "The Times1 correspondent atGorny Studin, says : "It is estimated at Rus sian headquarters that the Turks lost two thousand men in the late attempt to capture Fort St Nicholas." The limes correspondent at Gorny Studin, after inspecting the positions before Plevna, estimates that the Rus sians with the reinforcements received since the battle, must number nearly 50,000. The casualties on the 11th and 12th, amounted to over sixty per cent. London, September 21. The Daily News' correspondent who was present at tne battle of rievna, telegraphing from Bucharest, Sept 17th, says : "The Russo-Roumanian army has abandon ed now every pretense of the prosecu tion of the attempt against Plevna, and fallen back into the position occupied before the commencement of the bom bardment. The field artillery remains still in some .of the positions of the bombardment. It is announced that a third renewal is intended on the arri val of the Imperial Guard in a fort night. I have great doubt whether an other attempt will be made, and very much strongerjdoubt whether, if made, it can succeed. The Turks are better soldiers, individually, than the Rus sians. Of that, after seeing not a lew battles, I stand assured. In the strate gy of both major and minor tactics, the lurks are simply immeasureably superior; they are better armed than the Russians, both in great and small arms. They have engineers who can design amicable defensive positions. The Russian engineers seems incapa ble of repairing a hole in a bridge. The Turks seem as well provisioned as the Russians, and are flushed with suc cess." Constantinople, September 21. Chattanooga, Sept. 21. The abun dant crop of cotton, corn and fodder in the valley of the Black Warrior river in Alabama have been entirely swept away. The river suddenly rose six feet, which is within two feet of as high as was the terrible freshet of June, 1872. The planters had just commenced picking cotton,, and had not hauled the corn and fodder from the fields. It is estimated that 80,000 bales of cotton have been destroyed. Most of the planters are ruined, and it is doubtful if the actual necessaries of life can be secured now. The town of Tuscaloosa is about at the head of the devasted section. Merchants had ad vanced heavily on these growing crops. A Steamboat Stranded IfOss of i? the Tessel and Most of the - Cargo. .
