Frederick WASHiKOTok, Oct. 11 The Presi dent, accompanied by Secretary Mc- (Jrary Attorney General Devens and W W Corcoran, left here thia morning at 7;45-to attend Frederick' County air, at Frederick, Maryland. They arrived at Monocacy Station at 10:30, where they were met by a committee, and ptoceeded to Frederick on a spe cial car, provided by the B & O R R, under charge of Maj Koontz. The party arrived at Frederick at il o'clock, and were driven immediately to the fair grounds. . . W abhinqton, October 11. A caucus of the Democratic members elect to the 45th Congress will be held accord ing to usage in the hall of the House of Representatives on Saturday even ing, October 13, at 8 o'clock, to nomi nate a candidate for Speaker ,and other oihcers of the House, and to transact such further business as may be ne- cassary. (Signed) H Lester Clymer, Chairman National Congressional Com mittee. There are no new developments re garding the officers of the House. The canvass is quite hot. Ihe Ohio delegation was serenaded to-night at the Willard in honor of Tuesday. The oor says, sensationally, that "the speakership contest presents no new phase to-day. Ihe situation, in a nut-shell, is this : Sifting all sources of information and positions of the ground, Randall has about forty-eight votes pledged beyond a certainty on the first ballot, and has the even chance of eight more, which.will make fifty-six. The balance of the Demo cratic strength is amused respectively between Bayler, Cox, Ctoode, Morrison and Blackburn. The opponents of Randall have abandoned any general combination, but will endeavor to unite the free trade and anti-resump- tion elements of the West and South against him, and choose the candidate to be presented to the caucus, either from the West or South." Editorially it says : "Mr Randall seems to have the inside track for the speaker ship. There is little doubt that he will be elected. An Atlanta, Ga., dispatch says that the Republican State Committee met to-day, and by a vote of 9 to 2 passed the following resolution : "nesoivea, mat mis committee is hereby dissolved." A Baltimore dispatch says a confer ence was held yesterday at the archi episcopal residence, between Arch bishop Gibbons and the Bishop of the archdiocese of Baltimoie, and the names of three clergymen determined upon to be forwarded to Rome to fill the vacancy in the see of Richmond. Althcugh.the names are not divulged, it is .believed that Rev Father Janssens, the present administrator of the Rich mond diocese, was selected as one of the three. Archbishop Gibbons will probable be installed in about a week as primate of the Catholic Church in America. The message to the extra session will merely call the attention of Con gress to the deficiencies in the various appropriations, ai 4 recommend that legislation be effected to remedy the inconveniencies tat exist. Other matters will be postponed until the President sends his message to the regular session. Deputy collector A M Hughes tele graphs from Columbia, Tenn., that he has information that Thos Williams, who guided raiding parties, was taken from his house by masked men and murdered. Mr Evarts appeared in the Supreme Court to-day and argued a private case. THE WAR. Marching; on Plevna Junction of Chenket Pasha and Osman Pasha. Another Battle Before Kara Uondon, October ll.-The corres pondent with Chenket Pasha's head quarters, telegraphs irom Kadomirzy, near rlena, under date of Monday, as follows : "Our army occupies Telische. and to-day it effected a junction with Osman Pasha, who took up a position on the height ot uutrik. There has been no fighting on our way hither, except a trifling cavalry skirmish in the plains of Lukoyitz. The Russians who were encamped there tied on our approach. We hope to arrive at Plevna to-morrow. Reconnoisances in every direction have fai)ed to discover a sin gle Russian." .-. : The Standard s Uaiats special says : "An engagement took place off the Sulina mouth of the Danube, Tuesday, between a Russian and Turkish steam er. The latter explbded and sank with all hands." London, October 11. A Reuter from Kars, Wednesday noon, says : "A bat tle was fought yesterday near Aladja- dogh, lasting from midday uutil 6 o clock in the evening. Ihe losses were heavy on both sides. Movements are discernable this morning in the Rus sian camp which seem to indicate the renewal of fighting." Note. The Daily Jxews correspond ent, telegraphing on Wednesday from the Russian camp, said the Kussians had retired to the positions occupied before Tuesday's battle. Constantinople, October 11. The Turkish war office confirms the report of the junction of Chenket Pasha with Osman Pasha and the entry of rein forcements and supplies into Plevna. TWEED'S STORY. Toward, the close Mr Tweed desired to rectify as far as possible the injury, which has been done. He then read over the list of checks published and said in many of the cases it was money loaned and paid back to him. In other cases the checks were for contributions to the election expenses of the candidates. Other checks were for contributions to charitable and religious purposes. The reason he included all these checks in his private statement to the Attorney General, was to make a full statement of what he had done with the money. He did not mean to convey the idea that the parties to whom these checks were given knew the money came from the city, or that they were given for fraudulent purposes. ANTI-COAKL1NG MOVEMENT.
