Burning of Wharves and Freights in Baltimore Richmond and York River Steamship Line the Greatest Loser. Baltimore, December 22. A fire broke out at pier 2, corner of Pratt and Light streets, at the head of the Basin, this morning, on the wharves occupied by the Richmond and York River Steamboat Line, R. Foster, agent, and the Ericson Line (Philadelphia and Baltimore.) J. A. Sh river, agent. Fortunately a comparatively small amount of freight was on the wharves. As near as can be ascertained at pres ent, two hundred bales of cotton, one hundred boxes of sugar, one hundred and fifty bags of coffee, a small quan tity of tobacco and other freight was damaged by the fire and water, and twenty-five barrels of petroleum was burned, with the shed roofs of the piers. The steamer Shirly, lying along the side of the wharf, was slightly dam aged. No other damage was done the shipping. The moat damage is to the freight belonging to the York River Line. The fire originated from the stove pipe in a watchman's hocse on the wharf. San Fkanctsco, December 22 A few days ago the town of Caliente, in the southern portion of the State, was raided upon by a party of Mexicans and native Californians. A number of horses, a lot of provisions, dry goods and some money were taken. They also stole a number of horses from the town of Bakersford. Yesterday five of them were captured in the Lenjon Mountains and taken to Bakersford. Last night abodv of men, embracing a number of the best citizeus of Bakers- ford, forced their way into jail, took the prisoners into the district court room, empanneiled a jury, tried and convicted, and hung them in the jail yard. A conviction, which has been growing for several days, now almos amounts to a certain ty that the Dutch steamer, "Friesland," from Java to .Rotterdam, has been lost, with all bands, off Cape Fmisteroe. She passed Gibraltar on December 5th. A wreckage has been sighted, which, there is but little doubt, came from the "Friesland." The crew of the Friesland'' numbered about fiftv. She had no passengers. It was at first reported that there were 362 passen gers aboard, but these were Malay pit grim 8, wno landed at Jeddan. Toledo's Instructions to Congress. Toledo, December 22. A large meet ing nere adopted, resolutions urging Senators and Representatives to sup port the bill remonetizing silver with free and unlimited coinage, and Resolved, That the honor and credit of the nation are better protected by a due regard for the welfare and pros perity of those upon whom the dis charge of its obligations rests than by undue concessions in favor of theholdy ers of such obligations. A resolution was also passed con demnatory of the resumption act and demanding its immediate repeal. THE BARCLAY STREET CATASTROPHE. Several insurance com pamee have raised the question that they are not responsible for the de struction by the explosion. The value of the property destroyed must be bas ed upon its condition at the moment between the explosion and the fire which it occasioned.
