The Thrilling Story of the Sinking of the Metrop olis on the North Carolina Coast Fully 150 Persons Drowned The Beach Covered with Dead Bodies The Ship, Not the Coast, in Fault Washington, Feb'y 1. The signal service station at the wreck reports at 5 a m. The Metropolis sailed from Philadelphia on tbe morning of the 29th of January, bound for Para, Bra zil. South America, Uaptain Ankers. Total number of passengers 260. About 160 were drowned, and about 100 saved. The steamer is a total wreck, and noth ing is left above water. There are no bodies aboard, lbe wreck was caused by the ship being unseaworthy. She sprang a leak i aooui rz o ciock, mia- mght, and stranded at 7 o cock am, January 31. Tbe only way of saving life was by running ashore, as tne vessel was in a sinking condition. This is the statement of Lou McQuillan, one of the saved. 8 a m. The state of affairs this mor ning is terrible. Dead bodies are lying along the beech lor a aisiance oi two miles. They are an Deing piacea in proper places, back from the beach, and the living are being carea ior. About one third of those found are dead Two saloon women and their husbands are known to be dead. At 8:30 p m the vessel started a neavy leak in the rudder case. Finding, he could not gain on the leak with the pumps the captain concluded to light en the steamer by throwing overboard coal, and to bear .away , for Hampton Roads., At .midnight the circulating pump gave out. At 3 a m a heavy sea washed over the vessel, carrying away the smoke-stack, ; boats, engine room doors.' forward T saloon, and letting in a laree Quantity of water below, s lhe shiD was completely unmanageable Finding that nothing cousd ne done ior the vessel the captain attempted to reach tbe beach, in order to save what lives could be r saved. "' j It is officially announced that Ad- miral Hobart Pasha', fleet has arrived from Batoum, bringing ten battalions, and Dervish Pasha is expected at Con stantinople nhortly. This is very sig- tuhcant, and it evdently implies the evacuation of Batoum, either in face of the anticipated Russian assault, or in fulfillment, of the stipulations. It is not likely that the Russians would make an assault while negotiations are pending.' ; i ' - , - The telegram does not mention the alleged recent destruction of the Turk ish steamer on the harbor of Batoum. by a torpedo sent from the Russian steamer Constantino, as mentioned in a St Petersburg dispatch of January 30. Baroness Burdett Coutts has receiv ed the following telegram from the re lief agent who has been with Suleiman Pasha: VGallipoli, January 80. The Vienna political Lorrcspondrnce. and the Berlin Provincial Correspondence the latter pemi omcial. agree in the statement that the principal cause of the delay of the armistice is a difficul ty about the military conditions im posed. A Vienna piper says these in elude the occupation of Constantino ple. London, Feb 1. The Turkish minis ter has received a dispatch that the gen eral basis of the armistice and .peace were to have been signed yesterday. The afternoon s Pall Mall Gazette has a special from Rome which says : "Prr. vate telegrams of undoubted authority say the Russians are within twenty-four hours march of Constantinople. Italy is prepared to make an alliance with any powers to -oppose Russian supremacy. The limes in its second edition, has a Pera dispatch saying : "The ministerial council has determined to defend the city if attacked." The financier says: "The members of the Stock Exchange yesterday, amid a storm of groans and yells, burned the Times and JSews and some other puoiio cations of a pro-Russian tendency. Tbe members then signed an address de claring confidence in the government. There was a similar demonstration at Lloyds. Several out-door meetings in the country yesterday, to protest against supplementary credit, were taken possession of by the adherents of the government and turned into anti-Russian demonstrations."
