A letter from a young Charlottean now in Kansas makesS an allusion to his experience in turkeyj hunting in that State which is calculated to make the mouths' of our young huntsmen water. , After stating that he had been having a little amusement in this line he goes on to Bay : "The turkeys roost in large cottonwood and elm trees . along the streams, and are found in great numbers. They are hunted at night the darker the better with shot guns. They sit very still if they have not been hunted much, and one person can often kill as many as fifty in one night. I killed a good " many but the weather was so warm that they began to spoit and so I had to stop." 1 As Assistant Treasurtr tor Charlotte. An issue of the Asheville Citizen of week before last, which has just come to band, contains the following excel lent suggestion which is respectfully submitted to our members of Con gress : There is not an AfwiHtiLnt TTnifari 8tates Treasurer between Washington and New Orleans. There should be one, for the benefit of the Carolina 1 and Georgia at Charlotte. ; To collect interest from the government the neo pie of these Htates now have to use collection agencies at Jew. xonr ana Washington at both cost and incon venience. Charlotte is " r.losolv r.on. nected with this entire section of the Union by rail, is quite central, com Darativelv. and should have an officer of the kind stationed there. We hope our representatives in Congress wilt iook to tnis matter. Released Again. . John Boggs Hopper, otherwise John H Miller, the smiling baritone and skillful imitator of' other men's hand writing, is furnishing a large number of items here lately; and is getting for himself an immense deal of advertis ing. We have published the news of his arrest in Canada, his trial there on the charge of forgery committed in Georgiawhen it was proposed to extra dite him, and of his release. Then we published that he had been rearrested, charged with uttering forged accept ances, and now we give his former friends and admirers the benefit of the information i that he ' has been again released by the judge before whom he was tried. Thus! Johnny goes march ing home with the court's . certificate of good character in his Dockets and smiles anew as he casts about' him for new chirograpby to. imitate.' f: ff The Mexican Dollar. .' ' i Yesterday morning the city marshal received a telegram from J fc Morrison,' of Statesville, describing a horse which had been stolen from him on the night before, and instructing him to arrest the thief. ; An , hour or two after ; the dispatch was received, Policeman Stevens was walking down Try on street when he saw a man apparently just coming into the city, riding a . horse which he at Once recognized as filling the description. Following the rider down to the wagon lot in the rear of Burwell & Springs, he made a more minute examination of the animal, and being thoroughly convinced that lit was the horse described, proceeded immediately to arrest the man, who. had gone to a store to purchase feed for the horse. He first stated that his name was Jones and afterwards said it was Bell. He could not tell even a plausible story as to where he got the horse, and the policeman immediately took him to the station house. ' Later in the evening, the marshal having in the meantime telegraphed to - -the sheriff of Iredell and received instruc tions to hold him, he. was taken to jail and locked up until further notice. , : Tragedies and a Sudden Death in CleavelantLv A friend at Shelby writes - that the coroner of Cleaveland county, with Dr Gardner, left' Shelby, on Monday, for the northwest part of the county to hold two inquests, one over a child of Johnston ' Wartman. The report is that this child was killed by its mother who, in a fit of anger, threw it at her husband, striking iter head against the bed post producing death. The other inquest was over tne ooay oi ooipmon Young, an old and worthy citizen, who was found dead about his house. ! 4 7A negro by the names of Henry Roberts, who is supposed to have kill ed, near King's .Mountain, a negro sj the name of Ware, was lodged in Shelbyn jailMonday 'evening.5 Ware was fdund on the" railroad "trackjsome time last week, t terribly mangled j by the cars having passed -over him."
