To say, that he had injured Jt might hardlv be correct : for when the Secre tary of the Treasury is confronted by a disgraceful ietter, ana . positively ue clines to state, under oath, whether he has written such a letter or not, his case does not admit of much subse quent spoiling. This is just the truth of the matter. After Sherman's own refusal to deny on oath the authenticity Of the letter, no testimony from any other quarter is likely to alter the public judgment, which has already been made up. He has convicted himself. No innocent man would subject himself to the eus picion (to put it mildly) under which the Secretary of the Treasury laborj when he could by a word put these sojP picions at rest. - 4 THE R088KB-ACILEN SENSATION. . ' f 5" H The latest scandal in high life Is the alleged indecent assault in a Washing ton restaurant last week, of Congress man Acklen. of Louisiana, upon-the beautiful sister-in-law of a Northern Congressman whose wife is herself a famous beauty. Acklen is the Demo crat who displaced Darrell.. He is young and handsome and a welcome member of the "first society of .the na tional capital. It is said that Gen Bos ser, an ex-Confederate officer, beingin another apartment of the same Restau rant, heard the outcries of the lady who was in company with Acklen, and knocking at the door, 'which he found fastened, and being refused admittance he broke the door down,, sejaed the as sailant whom he found flushed with wine, and knocked him nearly sense less against the wall. This is the state ment against the Louisiana Congress man. A New Orleans dispatch of the 24th'says that he has made the follow ing statement : "The story that Gen Bosser assault ed me in Welcker's restaurant because can offered indignity to a lady is inn famoctsly false, .and I - cannot believe the story ever emanated from him. ' I left Washington on Thursday evening, 20th inst. The slander was published in the Washington Evening ' filar on Friday, the 21st instant, and did not come to my knowledge until the night of the 23d. Being unaware of GenEos ser's whereabouts, )I promptly tele graphed to various points to secure his refutation of this assault. As yet I have failed to reach him, but an explicit de nial has been made by competent par ties in Washington. No effort will be spared to eg thfa m atter right, and, if necessary, Ishill retdrh al oncerto Washington for that purpose." t Gen Bower's denial that he, had giv lh any! repbrVo the': circumstance a luded to to any newspaper, appeared in our associated press" die patches yes-; terday. Y1XDERBILT MB THE RAILROADS. Too Many and Badly Managed Roads for the Interests of Stockholders. Chicago, June 26. Wm H Vander- bilt. president of the New York Cen tral and Hudson Biver Railroads, con tributes a communication to the Times on the present railroad situation. He refers to the depression in business, the great number of bankrupt roads, and the uncertain future of all roads, unless there is a change in the man agement, and favors the pooling plan. He says superior natural advantages, better management and a greater vol ume of business will necessarily keep some xoaatf solvent much longer than others, but every bankrupt line tends to drag the others down. Such a road pays othang, to its stockholders or bondholders, olt'haa uo responsibility to its owners, its patrons or the public The? railroads now existing, if crowded 16 their follest capacity, couldldo four times the business of the country. there were only .two rates during the year, summer and winter rates, and al shippers knew just what to expect and were uniformly dealt, , with . it would add immeasurably -to the prosperity and stability of commerce.
